Hi Chad, All you did was run out of fuel. Its the sme thing when you change you fuel filter. Simple fix Do Not Try and Start! Just cycle your fuel pump 6 six times. No foot on brake, Push to start listen for the fuel pump to cycle six times when it is done cycling your fuel rail pressure is good and should start. This condition is no different that when you change your fuel filter. Hope this helps. Maybe see ya on the road. P.S. Ret. USCG Later Dave

After watching the out of fuel episode, and owing a F450 and being a master auto mechanic with Ford certification; you need to be aware that u have a Bosch cp 4.2 injector pump on your 6.7L diesel. It is extremely vulnerable to catastrophic failure which you have set in motion by running the truck out of fuel/lubrication. You will at some point experience continued damage to your high pressure injection pump, which will leave you stranded and cost over 8 grand to repair. To stop this from happening (and it will happen and leave u stranded), I recommend a DCR replacement injection pump kit from S and S diesel motor sport part # 6.7F-DCR. It costs us about 2000.00. I put one on my F450 and have no worries as it can sustain running dry or contaminated fuel. Also recommend changing your cold side turbine tube. The cold side turbine on your vehicle has extensive history of blowing apart and leaving plastic fragments all over the engine. Replacement for for turbine cold and hot side can be purchased from sinister diesel for about 750.00. If you are in or around the Texas Hill country near Blanco Tx stop by, and I can show this to ya and how to install. Questions call me 210 8436808, Mark.

I did the CP4 to DCR conversion on my '19 F450. Truck only had 20,000 miles and that CP4 was rusted. It wasn't a matter of if, but when that pump was going to fail. Some may cringe at the thought of spending 4,000 for DCR and install labor but the insurance of saving 10 to 15 grand for entire fuel system in case of a pump failure relieves a lot of stress. If the DCR isn't doable, the S&S Disaster Prevention Kit, with Hot Shots Diesel Extreme additive is highly recommended.

As chad was cranking it, I was thinking "on the next episode, we have to replace our fuel pump". Not sure on Fords, but on a ram, you cycle the truck on and off (not cranking) to get the lift pump to prime the injection pump so the injection pump doesn't run dry.

You never know when you might need it, whether you estimated wrong or just find yourself in the middle of nowhere…or helping someone else. Just a tip Chad...just about all of our later built vehicles have two fuel pumps. One is a low pressure pump that moves the fuel to the high pressure fuel pump. There are many designs but the basics are the same so the last thing you want to do is to run it out of fuel because the fuel acts as a LUBRICANT & a COOLANT for the pumps. When you run out of fuel, the fuel pumps and lines are then full of air so when you fill the tank back up, all of that air has to get out of the system which is a cluster and the only pump to do that is the low pressure or "lift pump". There's no need to run the starter on the engine when this happens, simply turn on only the ignition or run and cycle off then on then off about 4 to 5 times to get the air out of the system. Once that is performed, the engine should start up. Others have mentioned this as well. Too bad there's no section in the book about this. Note, its not a good practice to run the tank down that low often...those lift pumps depend on the fuel to keep them cool and lubricated so when you are down to a few gallons, the pump is not submerged in fuel as much and begins to heat up thus reducing the life of the pump. So, when the tank is about 1/4 full, its best to fill up then vs. later. The same goes with the high pressure pump which is very expensive in parts and labor to replace. Its not worth it...fill up sooner vs. later and change the fuel filters more often than the book says as well as the engine and transmission and transfer case fluids. Lube is cheap...repairs are not. Don't forget the axle lube as well. Lucky for you this happened where it did vs. a couple of miles away.
@raystanton238

Chad, your truck like most diesel trucks has 2 fuel pumps. The lift pump in the fuel tank delivers fuel through the fuel filters then to the CP3 engine driven high pressure fuel pump which boosts the pressure well into the thousands of psi for the high pressure fuel injection system. One risk of running out of fuel is the possibility of burning out the lift pump. It relys on fuel in the tank to keep it cool. When you're outside the truck and near the fuel tank, have someone turn the ignition key to the on position and listen for the hum of the lift pump. It should run for a couple seconds and then stop.

I bought a RDS 91 gallon Aux fuel tank for my F450. We just got back from a Beach trip at Jalama Beach with our Cyclone Toyhauler. The round trip was 1150miles, the F450 will tow the Cyclone there and back without stopping. We did stop at the last Truck stop in Arizona to top off the 1/4 tank burnt on the way, I had a bit more than a Half a tank left when we got home. My tank setup is Gravity Fed and works rather well.

I'm pretty sure Ford is the only one that still uses them. However, Ram and GM really failed with the low pressure side, which made it worse for their applications and was the reason for many of their failures. Ford did a much better job in this respect, but they are still susceptible to failure, and especially when treated the way they were in this video. The best thing to do here is to replace the CP4 with a S&S DCR pump.

I think that you need to remember that when your truck is under load (whether it be a trailer you are pulling or just a load in the bed), your fuel gages are not reading correctly and hen you thought you had another 24 miles in the tank, you were probably already on fumes. So a word to the wise, DO NOT let it drop below 1/4 and/or as another contributer said, carry a full diesel can in the bed and stop and use that BEFORE you run the engine dry. And you need to recycle the diesel fuel in the can just keep it fresh. Safe travels.

Chad, the Bosch CP4 high pressure fuel pumps REALY don’t like being run dry. You should have your truck checked out. It uses the fuel as a lubricant, when it doesn’t have that lubricant… it eats itself. Have your filters inspected. If there is metal flakes in them… you need to replace the high pressure pump. If you don’t, you’ll end up replacing the entire fuel system. That’s a $12,000 problem. Be safe y’all.

Safety valve on the end of the sewer is so important for a lot of reasons. One time we had someone monkey with our rig during the night when we were parked in front of a friend's house. When Don did a walk around, he noticed the handle was pulled on the valve. Luckily it was the safety valve that was pulled and not the actual sewer line valve (which is further back under the rig).

I used to drive commercial vehicles. I was always taught to NEVER EVER run out of diesel fuel. It is a huge pain in the a$$ to prime the fuel system & restart the engine. On our very long RV trips, I always carried two 20L jerry cans full of diesel. And, every time we stopped for a break or lunch, I always topped up the fuel tank, even if it was at 3/4. Why? Because one time, when we really needed fuel, there was a power failure and all the gas stations were down. We waited several hours. Lesson learned.

Same thing happened to me on a test drive of a brand-new truck! Back in January 2020, I test drove a 2019 F-350 Platinum DRW located at Greenway Ford in Orlando, Florida. The truck showed 20 miles until empty but stalled on a busy highway, Colonial Drive, directly across from the dealership. It was embarrassing because I was directing traffic around the disabled truck until someone from the dealership came to pick me up. The crazy thing is that I ended up getting a great deal, and I bought the truck! I now tell everyone I bought a brand-new truck that broke down on the test drive. My friends and family thought I lost my mind. I learned a valuable lesson from that experience, and as soon as the low fuel indicator comes on, I immediately fill up.

Easy for me to say you should know better! Especially after you've put so many miles on the road over the years, but it happens to most of us sooner or later. Really nice to see folks trying to help. Also interesting to know you needed more than a couple gallons to get it fired up again. Wishing you safe travels and no more drama.

don't know if anyone has made this suggestion yet but you might want to get a smallish transfer tank for the bed. 10-15 gallons. keep it full and if you get stuck you've got spare fuel. I have an 18 gallon tank in the back of my truck, I also carry a 5 gallon can. the can is for if I need fuel. the tank is just a tank. it simply adds to my range. and means less time at fuel stations too.

We had a F450 pulling our 40’ live aboard. We had a 100 gal bed tank. Helps not only extend our range. It also allowed us to shop for best fuel prices. Tank paid for itself many times over.

I use to own a new 2007 Fleetwood Gearbox toyhauler. It was a small one but I was able to put both of our Harley’s in it. The first trip we made in it was from Leavenworth Kansas to La Grange Wyoming. I was pulling it with a 1999 Dodge Ram with a 360 cu in engine. I got 2.2 mpg on that entire trip! 65 miles to a full tank of gas! I normally got around 24 mpg without the trailer. That was the longest 615 mile trip each way! Ten tanks of gas each way!

Chad, an auxiliary fuel tank to us is a must. The best is when you get that 50 miles to empty ding, you hit the switch and the fuel pump comes on and your DW will continue to be a happy camper. We have a 60 gallon tank on our F450, a Summit fuel pump and an electric solenoid to keep the fuel from gravity feeding past the fuel pump.

We have a fuel pump from Summit racing with a electronic solenoid before the pump to keep the fuel from seeping past the fuel pump. I have it wired into an auxiliary switch and can turn it on and off from there.

Hey guy's, nice video. You know there are two types that travel, those that have run too close on fuel, and those that are gonna run too close. At least you got it sorted out and only had a little embarrassing moment. The main thing through the whole ordeal was that Miss Daisy didn't get upset. Other than not seeing mama, but Chad saved the day for her. Hope y'all enjoyeed Texas. Hope you enjoy next destination. God bless y'all and stay safe on your travels. Remember the big E on fuel gauge doesn't mean Enough. LOL laughing with you, not at you. Been there, done that. 👍👍

Same thing happened to us except we were stuck on the freeway. You can’t trust the gauge regarding total miles left while towing. Mine showed 50 and my truck died. I realized when towing the gauge doesn’t calculate for that. Also don’t try to start it after it stalls or as soon as you put the fuel in. Check your manual on how to turn on your fuel pump. I have a Ram so it would be different. Wait for about a minute or 2 then try to start it. Love your videos. I love the experience videos.

Hi Chad and Tara! Oh man, what a way to start. So sorry that happened. I was going to mention that just cycle your engine as opposed to trying to start; i think Ford only gives you like a start cycle of like 10-15 times before it recommends chill for a few. If it makes you feel any better, I had this happen as I was test driving an F350; dealership only had like 3 gals of diesel in the tank on my test drive; we got like 9 blocks from dealership and truck died lol. Hope rest of the trip goes flawless. Stay safe guys! V/r Marc

Regarding the fuel pump failure Mark was referring to, its not just a "pump failure". When it fails, metal shavings will enter the entire fuel system; fuel lines, fuel rails, engine, fuel tank etc...). In Canada, RAM was estimating a minimum of $12,000 CAD to completely repair a truck with a CP4 pump failure. DO NOT let your truck run out of fuel!!!

I did almost the same thing a couple years ago. I was sweating it all the way with the gauge showing 30 miles of fuel remaining... 2012 Silverado 2500HD, then I saw the gas station sign (10 miles to go) and pulled in.... breathing again. Made it, never again I told myself and I keep a 5 gallon diesel can in the back of the truck when towing the RV. Now should I tell you the time towing when a small sensor went bad and killed the turbo, yep you're not going anywhere without the turbo running. Have a safe trip to my state of AZ and enjoy Sedona.
