Guys don't usually put full hand henna. During their wedding they put some tinny henna design because it's considered auspicious. In the movie, Ranbir comes to the wedding as the bride's friend. So he applies it for fun's sake during the ceremony. No hard and fast rule about the henna though. Anyone can apply how much ever they want to apply.

Groom sometime do not follow through it and sometime apply in really small amount just for the sake of tradition.
