Despite warnings to keep it clean, Kemi Badenoch, Robert Jenrick, Tom Tugendhat and James Cleverly have been quietly tearing chunks out of each other as they vie to be the next Tory leader at this year’s Conservative Party conference in Birmingham.
[Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News...]
But, what is the future of the Conservative Party? Pivot harder to the right to win back Reform voters or tact to the centre? Can any of the leadership candidates haul the party back from the brink? Or is the past the future? Boris Johnson’s autobiography is helpfully being serialised in the Daily Mail just in time to overshadow events here.
So, to dig into all this and more for this special edition of the Political Fourcast, Cathy Newman spoke to two party giants. Sir Graham Brady was the chairman of the influential 1922 Committee of back benchers for almost 15 years and he’s just released a book called Kingmaker giving an insiders account of the Tory leadership campaigns he presided over.
She also caught up with Grant Shapps, who’s held several cabinet positions over the years and could have been a candidate for the next Tory leader if he hadn’t lost his seat along with a huge swathe of his colleagues in the election.
Produced by Silvia Maresca, Calum Fraser, Rob Thomson.

It shows just how desperate, to say nothing of absolutely clueless, the Tories are. They don't inhabit a bubble, they live on a different planet. It's appalling that a public service channel interviews this disreputable specimen of political corruption and incompetence. Let's face it, Tories don't 'think': they 'calculate' and plot.

Margaret Thatcher, no-one seems to realise, was a huge contibutor to the down fall of the UK / not - so - great - for - rather - longer - than - people -like - to - admit - Britain. 3 reasons off the top of my head - The de-industrialisation and move to services that hollowed out the economy and made us lose competitiveness, (let alone the vindictivness towards the miners and others with justifiable remuneration issues), The brazen lack of care for the elderly and sick, which she oversaw during her premiership, allowing thousands to become homeless or die early, and which has continued since, and has driven the country to the point where a supposedly Labour government (what a sick joke that is) can cut winter payments to some of the poorest in society, whilst simultaneously allowing the rich to keep more of their wealth, and her incessantly repeated false, mendacious mantra that wealth drips down is still being repeated to this day, whereas in fact it's been shown to be an effect that is more of a capillary action, with wealth being sucked up to the richest in society. The right to buy was also a driver, in the long run, of the move to a less egalitarian society, with previously publicly owned housing being privatised by the back door, and falling into the hands of Landowners who were able to push up rents to ridiculous levels, whilst insufficient new public "affordable" housing has been constructed ever since. This woman should be reviled for her nasty, false, put - on, bourgeois - attempting - to - sound - aristocratic manner (which must have teed the queen off enormously - rather like watching a bad actor attempt an accent they can't manage, or even come close to) and actions that damaged the people who she deserted and looked down on, nasty, Hyacinth Bucket - style snob that I suspect she was (even though I realise the accent was suggested to her by some voice coach, who was either badly misguided, or had a wicked sense of humour). She was the opposite, imo, of Tony Benn, the son of a wealthy Pottery owning Earl, who had to fight to stay in the house of commons, and who had the plight of the poorer in society, and the dispossessed all over the world, uppermost in his mind. The fact that he was pilloried for most of his life and a nasty person like MT (he said, restraining himself) should be valued in the opposite way to how any fair society would value them, tells me all I need to know about the society I live in; a country where Julian Assange was allowed to be locked up for years for disseminating the truth, and where Tories want to bring back a disgraced former Prime Minister who scarcely ever spoke the truth at all - especially about anything to do with Partygate - but also about Covid generally (PPE etc.) & Brexit .- and yet, because their conscience is so seared they are unable to see what people think of them, & they think it's feasible he could make a come-back, they're suggesting this huge load of Botox with straight faces. In any well adjusted society they really ought to be out of power for ever and a day - but I fear that it will be far too short a time before stupid people will have forgotten their egregious, entitled, poisonous and immoral nature, and vote for this bunch of malodorous, venal snakes again. If I believed in God I'd say Gawd 'elp us!

How many times has 'Could Boris Johnson really make a comeback?' been a headline since he was ousted? Has he ever? Johnson's autobiography is Truss Lite; I didn't do nuffink, it was everybody else. I fully intended to read it, as I intended to read the Truss book. I thought that somewhere in both would be some sort of fascinating revelation, but all I've heard so far is self-exculpatory nonsense from both which would make reading either as tedious as trying to explain to a child with chocolate cake all over its mouth that no, the chocolate cake wasn't stolen by a UFO. Just as Truss's autobiography put yet another nail in an already nailed tight-shut coffin, so has Johnson's.
