Brazil battles nature as ‘largest ever’ floods submerge whole cities

At least 83 people are dead after days of heavy rain in southern Brazil and more than a hundred are missing.

Another 122 thousand people have been displaced by floods, which have destroyed roads and bridges in several cities, triggered landslides and caused a dam to partially collapse.

Far from normal... an extreme mass of hot air in the Southeast (São Paulo, Paraná, ... we are on red alert but for heat) is blocking the passage of cold fronts from the South (Rio Grande do Sul) to the Equator, which become trapped and rain in the same place, generating reported chaos. I live in the capital of Rio Grande do Sul, thankfully I live in a area that is very high and has not been directly affected, but some problems like food and water not being properly supplied are still here. Rio Grande do Sul is the size of Portugal, and half of it is being affected, it is even worse than what you poeple know, you have to be here to understand. With cities underwater, there are literally pirates emerging and robbing homes and robbing people who are on boats.

I live in southern Brazil, Curitiba city, and it is the hottest spring, summer and fall that I've ever seen. 30ºC during fall is not common at all. It is raining a lot in the north and southern from where I live, but here the rain became something rare. Very strange. In 50 years the world population doubled, during the 70's Brazilian population was around 90 million people, now is more than 209 million people. My aunt and uncle are stranded in Taquara, my brother lives in Porto Alegre and woke-up with his house under water and now is living in a friends place, my cousin was evacuated somewhere... and me and my family live in Uruguaiana where the waters are escoating... it's really scary... hundreds of cities destroied... rich and beautiful places and industries destroied... our state was a food producer and now all is destroied... it became hard to find food. I'm here in Porto Alegre, capital of the State of Rio Grande do Sul. The area of the dilluvium is comparable to the area of the whole Great Britain. Most of this area was completely destroyed by the massive rains (800mm in 48 hours) and floods. It´s like saying floods in France were caused by deforestation in Ukraine?? 90% of people in Brazil live really far from the Amazon. I am in between the Amazon and the state of Rio Grande do Sul. The foreigners who attack Brazil here surely think that Rio Grande do Sul is the same as Rio de Janeiro and that there is a lot of Amazon rainforest in Rio Grande do Sul for the gauchos to cut down.
