Ellen Good To be accurate, that flag with hammer, sickle on one side and a red star on the other side is NOT a Soviet flag. This is a flag of a military formation. I have to say, that according to the rules, if this flag has been lost (no matter what is the reason), formation will be decomissioned. Air forces formation where Major Yuliy Machur serves, was formed back in the days of USSR, so it holds old Formation flag with old symbolics.

This happened in the air field shared by Ukraine and Russian in Crimea, the peninsula which was given to Ukraine by RSSR in the 1950s. Majority of the Crimea people speaks Russian and support the Russian occupation. It's amazing how poorly relations have become since this event. From seeing Ukrainians acknowledging that the Russians are a fraternal country, brothers even - to the war and poisonous rhetoric we see today. It's such a shame. I applaud Ukrainian's stout defence of their country, but it's a war that never should have occurred had NATO not expanded to encompass more of the Russian border. NATO has proven time and again that they are willing to fight Russia down to the last Ukrainian, and I hope both sides wake up to that fact before any more lives are lost.

@@sully7750cosmo The annexation of Crimea was the result of the coup in Kiev of the democratically elected not perfect President of Ukraine. Actions have consequences. Look at the results of the Crimea referendum for God sake. Ukraine is a divided country with the majority wanting a closer relationship with the West while a significant minority want to remain closely aligned and friendly with Russia. The US intelligence service has known that the possibility of Ukraine joining NATO was a redline for Putin which has lead to this terrible devastating war.

About 10 days later there was a agreement reached. The soldiers who were with Kiev were to leave Crimea. Those who were with Russia were offered a contract with Russia. Most were from Crimea and chose to sign with the RuAF.

The Ukraine military has modernized 60+ years in only a decade because of all of the military aid they've been getting from the United states. Their uniforms look exactly like American uniforms, because they are, just with Ukraine's insignia on them. The Russians still are using 60 year old gear.
