On the Frontlines of Ukraine's Proxy War Between the West and Russia

The West has used everything from signals intelligence operations, espionage, fighter jet saber-rattling, and diplomatic standoffs to stem the rise of Russian influence around the world. These efforts are coming to a dangerous head in Ukraine - a classic Eastern Bloc proxy state - where the presence of NATO troops is driving tensions to Cold War-era levels.
As the armed conflict between the Ukrainian army and Russian-backed separatists enters its third year, VICE travels to the frontline to take a closer look at what international assistance really looks like for those caught in the line of fire.

the casualty rates on both sides are not as high as we, civilians, tend to perceive. My father fought in the Luhansk oblast in the Summer of 2014, and nobody from his platoon got even injured, while some other units were beaten heavily. It depends on a variety of factors, but since 2015-2016, the intensity of fighting has decreased substantially, so most of them are alive.

The way you paint with such a small brush, you'll never see your masterpiece. Ethnicity isn't what makes a country, what makes a country is how the people come together. @FloppaAppreciator

Well aware of the national murder rate, and of Flint Michigan. That's a completely different issue, but the reason Sweden has such a problem is because those people don't assimilate and reject their way of life. Ethnicity makes those ghettos and high crime, not the country. The United States is called the melting pot, not the stewing pot. That means everybody came in with one thing and became a part of everything that ended up being what "American" is. That's why I have heritage from multiple european societies but I will be damned if I call myself anything but american. And there's no reason to swear. -.-

Hes led his own people to ruin as trade sanctions are laid upon Russia, forcing Russian citizens to starve, he openly kills homosexuals, supports dicator leadership in the middle east and kills everyone who gets in his way. Putin is a man mad, with the likes of North Koreas Kim Jong-Un. He doesnt want "hostile regimes" on his borders, because they know what fucked up shit hes doing. You say everyone is unaware of the situation, buts its freaking obvious. If the US enters Ukraine, you can wave good fucking bye to mother shit Russia. When NATO and the US has had enough of Putin, there will be made decisions that will shape the world as we know it. If you believe Russia can somehow stand up against the entire world, then go ahead - continue proving your ignorance and uncalled for hate against the US, a country which you most likely never visited or only heard of by Russian medias. Remember the Budapest memorandum, where Russia, GB and the US guaranteed Ukraine's borders will not be changed? It's the first thing - Russia has its promises in its ass :) The second thing is that 73rd article of Ukraine's constitution says that only by referendum of all the Ukrainian regions (!) can be decided any change of Ukraine's borders. That's why the referendum in Crimea is illegal. The third thing is that all the Crimea was occupied by russian armed forces (Putin said that it is true in a year after the annexion). If you say "oh, there were russian forces before that" - that's true, but they had no rights to leave restricted territories (the russian's fleet bases). It's a shame you, see no problems in violating international laws and countrys' sovereignty. It's a shame you, dear citizen of whatever country, approve methods of 19'th century in international politics and diplomacy and openly support a warmonger.

yaroslav sokruta A proxy war is when two sides use two smaller sides to wage war. In this example the West is using the Ukrainian military while Rusdia is using Ukrainian separatists and mercenaries. Russia and the West can't fight each other because they have nuclear weapons, so they get these smaller groups to fight on their behalf. The same thing happened in Vietnam.

Артур Бар You're wrong. Russia was looking to: 1.) Acquire Crimea to regain a warm water port for its submarines. 2.) Acquire as much of Eastern Ukrainian territory as possible (as they have a high Russian speaking population) 3.) They wanted Western Ukrainians to replace their government with a more pro-Russian government. You have to remember that Russian intervention started because Viktor Yanukovych refused to sign a treaty to let Ukraine enter the EU since he supported Russian-Ukrainian relations. After people protested and Viktor left the country Russia started its intervention to keep Ukraine from joining the EU. Russia is afraid of former USSR states joining the EU because its afraid of losing influence. In all honesty, joining the EU makes economic sense to these countries because they get more trade and their standards of living rises. Russia however is scared of losing power because they think that the West plans to overthrow them one day. Which doesn't make any sense since the Cold war is over; changing out the Russian government would be much more costly and dangerous than just leaving Russia alone. Poland for example is extremely wary of Russia, and Russia hasn't been able to touch them because Poland is in NATO. Now Ukraine wants to join NATO to stop further Russian interference.

there is a difference between a national vote for independence vs a vote for the preferability where to live as long as payments and pensions are higher than in the previous country. if it was a Crimean Tatars ethnic uprising against Ukraine you could then compare Kosovo and Serbia to Crimea and Ukraine.

jakatom whatever you described is not allowed by the UN laws. The easy- switching choice of whatever state should be on a particular land as well as renouncing a citizenship for material perks is not protected and is not allowed by any state nor by the international law. If so, many countries would wish to be a second province of Canada or another state of America and it would give the justification to the superpowers' further expansion. Hence, what Russia did , the justification of its border expansion: "look! that was the people's choice! They wanted it! We are not guilty! We just helped them!" Right logic...
@DanielDaniel393
@DanielDaniel393 8 жыл бұрын
First of all, I was referring to a vote of a national minority that expressed its desire of "self determination". not a national vote as a whole state vote. Secondly, the referendum was sanctioned and ordered by the Crimean parliament in hostage by the Russian Special Military Forces ( late February-March) which already undermines its credibility and legitimacy. Thirdly, in order to compare the Kosovo's referendum and the Crimean one you need to look at the nature of these referendums, its prehistoric context, causes and the sole prerequisites needed for the international law and the UN to consider it as a legitimate referendum for "Self determination". Even the Kosovo's referendum hearing is currently pending before the International Court of Justice as it is really hard to prove the nature of such self-determinism. Next, by looking at the nature of the Crimean referendum there is no a bit or a slight similarity between either the Kosovo's referendum or Scotland's referendum with the Crimean referendum. The sole nature of the Crimean referendum was a mere illusionary excuse of the Russian expansion further to the West. Crimea as it was under the Ukrainian SSR since 1954 and after the referendum for the Independence of Ukraine in 1991 including the Crimea's vote of 54% voting to remain in Ukraine, and the populous strike of the Russian separatist attempt in 1994-95 had no consistent major complaints or strikes or protests against Ukraine. There is no recorded history of any political, social or cultural suppression, exploitation or discrimination of Crimea under Ukraine, nor it had a history of forceful assimilation actions against particular national or ethnic minorities; hence, after the referendum of 1991 Crimea became an autonomous region which was only one region granted such privileges along with the capital city of Kiev and the military city of Sevastopol. In addition, more than 15 years of the Ukrainian independence many local parties were ultra pro Russian and nobody suppressed or limit their political actions, especially the notorious Party of the Regions that was ruled by Yanukovich. Next, the economic hardships or a mere "corrupted government" is not enough for a self-deterministic referendum to be justifiable as it is. If it was it would create an international precedent and many failing states or regions would vote out in order to be annexed by more economically stable, rich and strong nations. Moreover, it would give a credible chance for any kind of immigrants to easily enter borders of wealthier countries with the notion of economic hardships. That what it was in Crimea during the Referendum. There was a strong political agitation toward older demographics with higher pensions and retirement plants in Russia, as well as alluring " bigger and stable salaries" for a working class. Fourth, the Euromaidan or the Revolution that happened in late 2013- early 2014 was the exact prehistoric reason of the ongoing context of the regular violation of laws, a consistent governmental negligence and irresponsibility, and the high level of corruption, kleptocracy and nepotism in Ukraine that sparked the national dissatisfaction among the all territories of Ukraine from the West to the East. The difference was that the West and the Center was not that vulnerable toward the Russian intrusive propaganda. Hence, many Eastern regions that were "doomed Russian" such as Kharkov region, Zaporozhie, Dnipro, Nikolaev, Kherson and Odessa regions are now more pro- Ukrainian oriented than ever before. Fifth, looking at your comment further, I just see that it is not me who is severely zombiefied, but YOU with the sweet, illusionary and cherish Russian propaganda of the Ukrainian "fake" statehood" and common phrases as such Ukraine is just another Small Russia, not a big difference. . So where is your argument about self-determinism? or Ukrainians are not worthy of it? So who is now ignorant and talking in double-standards?

Canadians are training the Ukrainian army because its in Canada's interests to keep the Russian military at bay, Canada Isn't a "peaceful" or "neutral" Nation by any standards however friendly its foreign policies may be they have too much at stake to not intervene. They share a very close border to Russia, and the Russian military (NAVY) has been aggressively paving new trade routes and threatening Canadian vessels in the arctic. Vice description: "The West has used everything from signals intelligence operations, espionage, fighter jet saber-rattling, and diplomatic standoffs to stem the rise of Russian influence around the world. These efforts are coming to a dangerous head in Ukraine - a classic Eastern Bloc proxy state - where the presence of NATO troops is driving tensions to Cold War-era levels." "As the armed conflict between the Ukrainian army and Russian-backed separatists enters its third year, VICE travels to the frontline to take a closer look at what international assistance really looks like for those caught in the line of fire." What it should say: The West has used everything from signals intelligence operations, espionage, fighter jet saber-rattling, and diplomatic standoffs *and coups* to stem the *defense of Russia and its allies* around the world. These efforts are coming to a dangerous head in Ukraine - a classic Eastern Bloc *ally of Russia* - where the presence of NATO troops *and the puppet government of the USA and its entities* is driving tensions to *extreme* Cold War *II* levels. As the armed conflict between *USA and its entities back* the Ukrainian army and *its puppet government* and Russian-backed separatists enters its third year, VICE travels *50 miles from the front, complete with staged fighting* to *pretend to* take a look at what international assistance really looks like for those caught in the line of fire, *which is mostly civilians killed by the Ukraine Army and USA backed NGO's*. EDIT: I have not rechecked my map. It may be more accurate to say 40 miles. Also, USA has boots on the ground in the form of advisers/trainers. The USA has also conducted military exercises such a Marine amphibious landings on Ukraine beaches/shores, etc. The USA and its entities last coup was against the democratically elected Ukraine gov which it over-threw and installed the puppet gov. There is a lot more to the situation. If you desire, find my other post.

In Syria Russians were invited by the legitimate government and therefore legal under international law. Likewise Iran. The USA invaded illegally. In Crimea..."The autonomous Republic of Crimea" with its own Parliment In Simferopol, arranged a referendum to Leave The Ukranian federation and rejoin the Russian federation. This resulted in over 96 %in favour of rejoining Russia. I doubt if that proportion of East Germas would have been in favour of rejoining West Germany...which did not have such a democratic referendum of those directly concerned. In East Ukraine where I have stayed and have friends the situation is terrible. Russia cannot invade or would be in breach of international law, Individual Russians no doubt help but an army is needed to repel the Kiev junta forces. So many atrocities have been committed by the US backed junta that there never will be the possibility of Lugansk and Donbass ever reuniting with Kiev. Refugees run away from aggressors, not towards them. There are two million such refugees from East Ukraine in Russia...a clear show of who the aggressors are in this conflict. A little known fact...of the ten most populous cities in Ukraine nine speak predominately Russian not Ukranian. However in the heart of the conflict area in Debaltsavo my friends speak both daily. Read "Frontline Ukraine" for more information. I have neither the time nor inclination to counter the saturation Western war machine propaganda.
@jimmyn89SWE

You forget to mention that Russia already occupied the entire peninsula, including government buildings, the "decision" to hold the referendum was made while the parliament building was occupied by armed Russian soldiers. The Crimean prime minister that was appointed while the parliament was occupied only had 4% of the popular vote, his party held 3 seats out of 100 in the parliament. And there was at least one MP who has stated that his voting card was used to vote for holding a referendum despite him not even being present at the time. The military occupation alone makes the referendum illegal, no matter if the results are authentic or not.

jimmyn89SWE Wrong on every point. The president was elected, not appointed. His ratings were poor but as poor as the present US backed Junta. And No, the Russians were not occupying the whole peninsula. They were legitimably in Sevastapol and never exceeded the permitted 20K allowed by agreement. The USA is not occupying all of Cuba because thy have a torture base there.
@jimmyn89SWE
@jimmyn89SWE 8 жыл бұрын
Joss Fitzsimons Stop this charade, no one believes the official Russian story. The entire world knew the so called "little green men" were Russian soldiers the moment they appeared. And they weren't sitting in their base in Sevastopol, they were all over the peninsula, occupying government buildings and besieging Ukrainian bases, so yes, Crimea was under military occupation. And far as pretty much the entire world sees it, Crimea is still occupied, almost no countries recognize Russian rule, even close friends of Russia have refused to recognize it as part of Russia.
@jimmyn89SWE
@jimmyn89SWE 8 жыл бұрын
Lomnjac007 Oh yeah? Less than 10 countries have officially recognized Russian rule over Crimea, out of roughly 200 or so countries in the world. 1. What ban? The repeal of the language law was vetoed by interim president Turchynov, the repeal never passed. And even if it had, it certainly did not ban Russian language, the law was only passed in 2012 and Russian language was not banned before 2012. Also, separatist commander Igor Girkin has claimed personal responsibility for starting the war. Furthermore, there have been plenty of weapons used in the war that are in service with the Russian military but that are not and never have been used by the Ukrainian military and therefore could not have come from any Ukrainian depots. 2. As for nazism, the nazis in Ukraine are a small minority, put together Svoboda and Right Sector hold about 7 seats out of 450 in the Ukrainian parliament. And there are nazis fighting on the separatist side as well by the way. In fact the former "People's governor" of Donetsk, Pavel Gubarev who is a Russian by the way, was part of the neo nazi group "Russian National Unity". 3. The Georgian army was most certainly not led by any Americans and only a small part of it had any American training and that was counter insurgency training which is not exactly useful when fighting against a conventional army. And there were far more than 10 000 Russian soldiers involved, not to mention separatist forces, the Georgians were heavily outnumbered. Also, the war started after months of separatist and Russian provocations. There were skirmishes between Georgia and separatist forces the entire first week of August. These skirmishes started when separatist IED injured 5 Georgian policemen. And Russia had already been massing and moving forces towards the Roki tunnel before the war started, whereas the Georgians only mobilized on August 7th when fighting was already underway. The Georgian offensive was nothing but a desperate preemptive strike. And really? 300 kilometers you say? Have you actually looked at a map from Georgia, it's a small country. If Georgian forces fighting in Thskinvali had retreated for 300 kilometers they would've ended up deep inside either Turkey, Armenia or Azerbaijan, they even could've reached Iran. And no one claims that Ukraine could withstand a fullscale invasion, Russia is only doing enough to keep the separatists from being overrun, for example in August 2014 when the separatists where on the verge of collapse. And it is extremely hypocritical for Russia to support the separatists seeing as supporting separatism in Russia is a crime that can give 5 years in prison.

Wish you would show this from both sides. From things I've watched and seen over the years it looked as though many people wanted anything to do with Russia removed and wiped out from their country and that includes Russian speaking citizens. They wanted it removed from schools and shops even though many citizens spoke Russian. I read they even banned it with a fine. The events of the coup led to this conflict where the violence towards pro russians was horrific mainly from those that call themselves the Azov battalion. It's not hard to see why mainly Russian speaking citizens in Donbass wanted to protect themselves and their heritage. I've seen videos where the people of Donetsk live in basements due to the constant firing on their homes.....this doesn't come across as right to me as why would Ukraine be firing shells at civilians areas for the last 8 years.....those that live there say they are not wanted or needed. Then we have the war today and there has been numerous accounts against the Azov battalion again. In Mauripol it has been said they were using people as human shields and hiding out and firing from civilian areas. There has people even said they were stopped and fired on if they tried to leave. Azov were also using hospitals to store their supplies and the benefit of hospitals meant they could also use the emergency generators while civilians are hiding out in basements. This is already getting too long but theres always 2 sides to a story and it's pretty obvious since the coup Russian speaking people feared for their safety. Many say they should leave and many did but these people and their families have lived there for generations or they have no where else to go. You'll also find most that stayed behind were the elderly.

I read everything you said but it doesn’t make it right to invade a sovereign country. Looking at it now, nothing can save Russia from the humanitarian atrocities they have done. @@matthewhue apologies for the long drawn message there. You're probably the only one that read it, lol. I'm just annoyed how our media keep lying to us and so many in my country are falling for it. I'm not even Russian, I'm Socttish and it pisses me off. Youre right invasions isnt always the way but 8 years Putin has tried to draw a line in the sand for peace....of course what's happened in the Donbas isnt the only reason. I didnt want to right a novel just now but in a nut shell which isnt really possible with how complicated it is we had NATO moving closer and closer to Russian borders breaking agreements placing weapons towards Russia....America sticks their nose in and backs the coup of 2014. They then start giving billions of dollars, weapons and training.....the coup ended pretty badly, pro Russians were locked in a building which was set a light, shocking stuff, absolute mayhem and many died and much more wounded.....then the 8 year war on Donbas began and even with minsk agreements they end up being broken twice. Maybe best watching Fire in Ukraine as this is getting way too long, boring and complicated....I will also say look up crimes of torture and killing that the SBU, Azov. TORANDO AND THE RIGHT sektor did to those in Donbas. The tornado battalion is no more and many got jailed for their crimes. These reports date back from 2014 made by the UN human rights, you can find them online....anyway if you or anyone else got through this you deserve a star

@@owenthomas5103 You need educating. It's a NATO backed proxy war against Russia who are fighting Ukrainian neo Nazi battalions in Donbas, who have killed 14 thousand innocent Russian civilians since 2014. The Ukrainian neo Nazis follow the ideology of Banderas, a Ukrainian Nazi from the 1950's. Ukraine failed in a NATO backed counter-offensive after Boris Johnson scuppered a peace deal in Instanbul. Now there's half a million Ukrainians dead or injured due to NATO's desires to expand into territory that was once Russian, and will be again. Zelensky, a comedian and now a psychopath, needs to be removed, permanently, before another peace deal is agreed. God bless Russia and President Putin. 🇷🇺🇷🇺🇷🇺 You are on the right side of history against the US imperialists who are using Ukraine to destabilise, and even break up Russia, which is what NATO did in the former Yugoslavia. This time, the US are out of their depth. They are not in Iraq now!

Vice is wrong on two points: 1. Ukrainian personnel taking part in a Canadian training (beginning of the video) is not the only one and definitely not the luckiest one. Military training provided by allies for the Ukrainian military (Armed forces, National Guard, Border forces, Marines, police, and others) have been going on all-year-round since 2014 - the beginning of Russian invasion. Of course, not all Ukrainian soldiers participate in such training, but not few as it appears from the video. 2. ‘Where the presence of NATO troops is driving tensions to Cold War-era levels’ - what is driving tension is Russia invading Georgia and then Ukraine. Not the other way around. Moreover, a handful number of NATO soldiers and military advisers hardly falls under ‘the presence of NATO troops’. And sorry, there is no ‘Ukraine's Proxy War Between the West and Russia’. There is a war between Ukraine and Russia. Ukraine is grateful for all of the support, but coffins from this war go to the Ukrainian families, not to the West.
