Wandsworth Prison issued urgent improvement notice after serious security failings found

HMP Wandsworth hit the headlines last year when an inmate escaped. But as this programme has since reported, the prison is plagued with problems, including rampant drug use, overcrowding, violence, self-harm and suicide. (Subscribe: bit.ly/C4_News_Subscribe)
Now, it's become the sixth prison in a year and a half to be issued with an Urgent Notification for improvement after inspectors found serious security failings, squalid conditions and prisoners in despair. Its governor resigned this week.

Your freedom being taken from you is the punishment the courts hand down. Prisoners are entitled to a clean, safe environment and one hours fresh air per day. Education, Gymnasiums and time out of cells socialising are privileges that can be expected in most prisons as long as they are well staffed and the population is well behaved. Extra items like TV upgrades, games consoles and release on temporary license take YEARS to earn on the IEP scheme. These establishments couldn’t be any less like ‘holiday camps’. They are constantly stressful & violent with self harm, drug abuse and bullying ever present. Anyone with the belief that UK prisons are a soft option hasn’t the first clue what they are talking about unfortunately. Even the well maintained, modern and fully staffed jails are an ordeal to survive and after 14 years of a Tory Ministry of Justice coupled with a Tory Home Office the whole estate has been financially decimated. Don’t expect much of an improvement after the general election with a former CPS chief moving into Number 10.

Yes, prison should be a punishment (mainly being the taking away of freedom, but it should also be no holiday camp), but if a nation doesn’t have a strong focus on the rehabilitation of those who _can_ be rehabilitated, then that nation is just doomed to send repeat offenders back to prison.

When I was inside (YOI wetherby) so for ages 15-18. This was 13years ago now, the prison officers were called ‘screws’ by prisoners but anyways there was some really nice screws in there and one said to me ‘the court dish out the punishment and it is our job to look after you, we aren’t here to make your life more miserable’. I always had respect for the screws, used to chat to them on exercise and association. I do actually miss one of them Mr Ali.. it’s a shame all prisons aren’t like this but under staffing is a real issue. I never felt disrespected or mistreated in anyway by the screws, it’s a high stress job too..

Staff retention is half the problem. In recent years it's been like a revolving door. Due to the introduction of staff cuts, lower starting pay and poorer shift-patterns it became a less attractive career choice. That, combined with increased violence, drugs and inexperienced staff has made a recipe for disaster.

My Son is in here at the moment! He's has problems with alcohol for the past 16 years. He needs proper help and won't get that in prison where he is just a number and a commodity as many others are, in men's and womens prisons. Have they just put him in here to finish him off!!!!! He's 36 now.

I used to work around Wandsworth and there was a couple of spots just outside the prison I'd have to go to. The area itself seems fairly nice but the prison looks very intimidating. It just looks 'wrong'. Seeing a report like this doesn't surprise me in the slightest. It emanates this in a way that could probably be measured with some kind of meter or special camera.

Well you should because the people that come out are worse than when they went in. The prisons are falling apart, over full so that now sentences are made shorter or no custodial sentence at all. None of this makes for a safer society. You can despise the crimes and some of the criminals but it's about keeping the public safe, and this isn't doing that. The cutbacks over by he last 14 years also means probation services are cut to the bone, then those people come out and commit more crimes
