Was there a period in recent history when prisons were operated in a better, or more exemplary way, do you think?
@airingcupboard11 ай бұрын
What's really disturbing about all of this is that British society is that it's instinctively punitive, from school onwards. It's not enough to be unemployed, but we will make you jump through all sorts of hoops just to get money that we know won't sustain you anyway. If you commit a crime, it's not enough to take your liberty, but we are going to humiliate the prisoner as well by not even showing society's decency. Then there was the Postmasters scandal. The instinctive move wasn't curiosity, but punishment before anything else. I think all this making others feel like nothing is a zero sum game. It's nothing more than a cover story for societal and political failure. What are apparently rational people expecting by sending prisoners out homeless?
@lovealways72911 ай бұрын
So true, it is extremely punitive and it feels a sense of joy and pride in being punitive... it is really very strange.. as the world knows and understands punishment does not work, but our justice system with the judges wearing those ridiculous wigs or whatever... they so relish in that kind of dynamic.. it is weird!!

A society needs to be judged on how it keeps prisoners, this is typical of what happens every time the tories get into power. The question “they are prisoners, what does it matter” is such an important one. All the tories care about is to be seen to be being tough on crime without making sure that it’s the right person being convicted. The damage the tories do when they get into power is just shameful and it’s always the same story, no matter who it is that gets into the cabinet or when. Then when the opposition gets into power they have to over spend to put it right. We just go round and round. When will we learn?

Too many people in the comments believing what they are told. Prisoners are given kit weekly. Cells with out of use toilets are moved to another cell or the toilet is fixed. If the toilet is overflowing it is most likely the prisoner has plugged it with contraband or is protesting by flooding. It showed in the clip a prisoner laying on the floor who clearly had work boots on covered in paint what you couldnt see was him painting. Officers who mistreat prisoners are suspended under investigation. Prison in real life is not like the movies they are not heroes they are for the most part very bad and violent people.

@Coelacanth1 I understand your point, but you don't know the full story. Do you know why she is not allowed to work for the prison service anymore? The problem with civilian staff is that the prisoners are on their best behaviour around them and civvies don't have access to their files so it is very easy for them to be manipulated. When I first started in the job I was very wet behind the ears and took them at face value but after a while you realise why alot of the people are there. We also have doctors, nurses and mental health teams who are on hand to deal with any issues they may have but there are people who have addictions and do not want help its not easy but we can only help those who really want it.

@@beerbug2020 I have not been in prison, but I do work with ex inmates in a mental health capacity to have their stories as witness and the sadness of it all most report trying to get mental health care before finding themselves in prison, where they became worse.

This is a shocking report and I’m appalled. I’m also really shocked though that nobody involved in this report seems to see a problem with the crossing of professional boundaries here. Surely if she is a Quaker, she has other Quaker friends who are involved in supporting people outside of the prison service that she could have directed them to.

You would make a great prison governor.....rules rule......not humanity.
@twinny55511 ай бұрын
@@willlawrence8756 professional boundaries are the bare minimum of rules in support work. I have been a support worker for a very long time and I actually don’t think the prison system works, but crossing professional boundaries often leads to people having their lives ruined. This is not to do with rules for the sake of rules, this is to do with keeping both support workers and vulnerable people safe. They’re there to stop people being taken advantage of and as a recognition of the power imbalances. She hugely misjudged this situation. It’s unacceptable and I agree with the decision to stop her from volunteering in prisons.

I know this women is talking the truth. I went to see my son in brinsford prison the other day. To be privy to go into my sons actual cell to see conditions that has haunted me ever since. My son is forced to stay in something that I only can compare to an enviromental health issue. Now wonder inmates are trying killing them selves. Why are these establishments allowed to run as they see fit, when it is clear that intervention is needed in regards to the care of the inmates these inhabitabal conditions are only further assaulting an individual mental wellbeing to the point of self harm. This is genocide on those whom are deem as less important in society as I witness these conditions at brinsford prison on Saturday 26/2/24

I'm glad that this is being exposed. We can't help prisoners to rise with dignity for themselves and others unless we treat them with dignity. However, I would like to point out how disabled people like myself have been treated even worse than this in the UK. I was left in the same sheets for 8 months, without regular water so that I was hallucinating. I finally got my own hospital room (I was that ill) and couldn't digest food properly because I"d been eating so irregularly. Food would just go straight through me. I hope someone at Channel 4 sees this because we need to expose abuses everywhere. x

Acceptable living conditions in my opinion, if you've checked in at the hotel you've checked in. START holding people accountable for there behaviour. What do you want to do next? roll out the red carpet and offer them 5* treatment. So it should be the absolute worse place imaginable!! I am horrified that there are people out there that are so PRO Prisoner, how about the victims of these crimes, lives that can't be brought back, families who seek out justice. Appalled that there's people in this country that they think they deserve anything more than this. Prison is a walk in the park, they should get nothing it is a punishment. Lets make these living conditions good for them so it encourages them to not have a deterrent and continue to commit crime. So it should be the worse place, rats, mould.
