Billy Dee Williams's Harvey Dent was one of the biggest missed opportunities in the early Batman films. After being featured in Tim Burton's 1989 epic, he went missing in the sequel; Batman Returns. But what would have happened to the character if he showed up in this 1992 cult favorite? Rob is here to answer that question and much more in this episode of FanScription!

I've often wondered how things would have gone down if Tommy Lee Jones had been cast in the role for the '89 film. He wasn't quite established yet (this was before THE FUGITIVE), but I always thought it would be interesting to see how an obvious Texan (or a Southerner or some sort) fit into the very New York-like city of Gotham. Also remember that Jones co-starred in MEN IN BLACK, which I've always thought of as "one of the 'Tim Burton movies' Burton didn't direct," so to me it's plausible. Billy Dee Williams is interesting, too. Honestly, I think he's the best live-action Harvey Dent thus far - sorry, Aaron Eckhart - but I don't think of him as a "Burton guy," which is ironic because apparently Tim was the one who chose him for the part. It's hard not to imagine Lando Calrissian when hearing his voice. I also think it was slightly absurd when "fake Billy Dee" (I'm not sure which one of you it was) referred to the Ice Princess as "Ice Princess." I mean, surely the woman had a real name, and in a serious legal context like that one Dent would have used it, no?

In the script, it's only brought up in only TWO scenes. The first was in the opening when we see a little boy staring at the Oswald in the cage and their mother tells him to stop staring at his brother. And then when Max is in the cage at the end, Penguin stares at him in the cage and he remembers his mom saying "Max, don't stare at your brother." and he realizes Max was his brother.

@@wjzav1971 I don't see Schumacher's style as all that different, at least when it comes to Batman. Both are surreal to an almost frightening degree, although Burton IS more subtle about it and thus more disturbing." I remember seeing BATMAN FOREVER in the theater and thinking, "This really isn't that different from the first two, except that it's more funny and kid-friendly." The part where the Riddler probes the two gun molls' minds and sees that they're thinking about Warner Brothers cartoons, for example, is something that Burton never would have shown. By the way, it's always bothered me a bit that Batman - and Tim Burton - are so often described as "Gothic." It's partly because I feel the word cheapens Burton's style (it reminds me of kids at the mall during Halloween and S&M porn more than truly being an alienated individual) and partly because it's more a literary style than an art style. That said, BATMAN RETURNS does have some Gothic literary influences: the Penguin is clearly supposed to be the monster in Mary Shelley's FRANKENSTEIN, and his Arctic World Pavilion evokes the "pleasure dome with caves of ice" in Coleridge's "Kubla Khan." Bruce Wayne corresponds quite well to Lord Byron's "Manfred," the guilt-ridden aristocrat with superhuman powers; all that's missing is the incest angle. Even the power struggle between Max Shreck and Selina Kyle is straight out of William Godwin's novel CALEB WILLIAMS.

@@sarahhutchinson1644 Tim Burton didn’t respect Batman at all. He was barely a detective, he did absolutely little detective work. Tim Burton clearly doesn’t know shit about Batman and especially his villains. He’s not that mentally unstable, he doesn’t have a no kill rule (he actually smiled when he killed someone), and his Bruce Wayne persona is terrible. Isn’t Bruce Wayne supposed to be a philanthropist? He’s supposed to be fighting demons, Keaton’s Batman was not conflicted at all. There’s nothing even remotely comic accurate about him.

Maybe it's just me but I feel like Penguin and Two-Face always get the short stick in the Batman universe...that is until Cobblepot in Gotham but that's a different story. As for Two-Face, apart from the Batman the Animated Series two-parter Two-Face, there just hasn't been as great a Two-Face story. The Dark Knight killed him off far too early. He and Penguin always just seem to be the secondary target Batman beats at the start before going after the main villain. PS, they seriously need to take a break from The Joker and Harley Quinn.

I had a similar "What If" scenario for Batman Returns but my idea would be if it also had Killer Croc. Basically, it would have the same plot and arc, just with Killer Croc playing the role of the Penguin, trying to find his identity, using the circus freaks to weasel his way into society, and plot revenge on the people of Gotham. Penguin would also be in the film in the role of Shrek, as a greedy and corrupt businessman (Oswald Cobblepot), who uses is alius (Penguin) to commit crimes and uses his deformed flipper hands to convince Croc to join him. In the end, Croc would die from the toxins in the water, buried by his pet alligators, and Penguin would die from Catwoman via the shocking kiss. Edit: I would also have the half-brother thing with Penguin and Croc, both were born with deformities but Penguin was born within wedlock and Croc was a bastard of the help.

I think this is a perfect redo of the movie. The only small addition I would make the script is make on of the kids Batman saves in that cage one of the future Robins. Not Dick, because he'd be with Haley's circus which wouldn't be in Gotham at this point and should be saved for the sequel. Maybe after the climax and things are settling down, we cut back to the kids who are all at GCPD headquarters waiting for each of their parents to pick them up. One of these kids (probably the one that you mentioned shielding the toddlers) is staring out the window into the snow. He smiles gently and whispers "Thanks, Batman." Then we hear a women call out "Tim?!" His head spins around and he spots a women down the hallway, clearly his mother. He runs at her and jumps into her arms as she says something along the lines of "Timothy Jackson Drake! I was worried SICK about you!"

Honestly, the only changes I would make to Batman Returns is having Max and Penguin be brothers, not having it so that Penguin was a child murderer (before he's outed), and maybe changing up Catwoman's motive for working with Penguin because as is, I can't see Catwoman working with someone who's so obviously working with Max Schreck. Maybe Penguin was impressed with her work and offered her a "can't say no" amount of money, or maybe she's using it as an in to get a chance to kill Schreck

I looooove Batman Returns and yeah, it's my favourite Batman movie. But the inclusion of Harvey Dent is making it that much better! I think we'd need to get rid of more chaotic stuff in the process to make it less crowded, but the ending has "Empire strikes back" written all over it, and that's what they were going for as far as I can tell :D

I had an idea for a prequel comic set before Batman Returns which would depict Harvey Dent, Commissioner Gordon and Batman teaming up to fight the Falcone crime family which has taken over the criminal underworld after The Joker pretty much killed the previous crime family. Harvey Dent becomes Two Face by end of course, and there would also be appearances by Max Shreck and Vicki Vale setting up Batman Returns and explaining where Vicki went
@GregOrCreg
@GregOrCreg 3 жыл бұрын
I prefer a prequel set between Batman and Batman Returns which explains what happened to Dent (i.e. the events leading him to be incarcerated in Arkham Asylum). You could feature pretty much all the supporting characters including Vicki, Knox, Mayor Borg, the new Mayor, Max, Chip, The Ice Princess, and Selina, except for The Penguin and Red Triangle Circus Gang (except perhaps to hint at various sightings or strange clown-related crimes occurring in the wake of The Joker's death).

@@maldon3659 Sorry for repeating you. 🙂 I wish someone would make this, or at least write the outline for it. Would Harvey/Two-Face be the only rogues gallery villain?
