As someone who loves the ballet, and has subsequently read the original book and watched the majority of film adaptations of that book, I can't believe I'm saying this, but... ...I actually consider this to be one of the better film adaptations out there. So a cool fact I know: The dancing sequences used motion capture with professional dancers who had done the ballet so they could get it as accurate as possible. MoCap was still fairly new at the time, so for this movie to be able to use this tech was a pretty big deal (And looking at the definitely rushed production, it's pretty impressive the team got to experiment with new tech for it)

He just made a grave mistake covering a barbie movie, now all the barbie fans who grew up with all the movies are gonna come out of the freaking woodwork to yell at him to cover the others. Which is hilarious considering he's literally the worst audience to have for those kind of movies, although it would still be funny to see him cover them because even he can admit this is far from the worst nutcracker adaptation out there. We all know which one THAT belongs to.

Ok so, I have nowhere to put this but this is the chance for me to get it off my chest regarding the CGI animated Barbie movies: Despite the insane amount of pink, sparkles, and girly whimsy… despite the horrific designs of some character models namely the infamous Bibble and disgusting Mermaidia sea turtle… Despite the dated advertisement campaigns that put Barbie as the epitome of the modern girl (I’m looking at you terrible Rockin’ Rappin’ Barbie): I’ve ALWAYS considered the era of Barbie films, starting with Nutcracker and ending around 2011-12, to have an undeniable _elegance._ The way they tell the story, the way the characters talk to eachother is VASTLY different from the 6-second-attention span of more current children’s animated entertainment, especially on KZbin. Theres a maturity to the interactions, such as the ones between Azura and Elina in Fairytopia. The character relationships, though not particularly complex, are treated with a certain level of respect, even with the narmy or silly environment, such as with Barbie and Raquelle in Fairy Secret. They manage to give this odd, paced, dignity to the stories they depict despite all the hyper girliness, and I picked up on it as a kid. There was a spirituality to some films such as with Barbie Mariposa; again not incredibly deep, just noticeable to me as a kid in a way which helps it stand out from other animated films. Even as Barbie started looking more… alien… around Barbie in A Mermaid Tale, there was still a level of dignity to the characters and stories; even with more ‘wackiness’. The greater focus on chapstick comedy in the films afterwards (Barbie a Fairy Secret for instance) was when things started to slip. But I still consider Barbie a Fairy Secret a decent way of depicting Barbie in a modern, even meta setting. However, it definitely started getting a little stale with Barbie and the Magic Door and VERY stale with the _third_ Prince and the Pauper spoof. After Fashion Fairytale and Fairy Secret, both of which strayed from the typical Fairy-tale timelessness, that’s when it generally lost its magic. Barbie and life in the Dreamhouse, though I watched it, started to stray from the initial magic. But it did make up for it in its sharper comedy. This is also why I was originally comedically against the announcement of the Barbie 2023 film, as it seemed to go TOO meta, and TOO comedically satirical; obviously afterwards, I heard good things about it. Barbie’s original and current campaigns are all about being the modern girl, and the older ones definitely had a fun retro feel to it that many are looking back with a nostalgic appreciation of the aesthetic. Barbie Diaries sit of has this appreciative atmosphere of the stereotypical Highschool environment, with a calming homely feel, even though it isn’t part of the same collection as the fairytale Barbie films (both in setting and aesthetic). In the end, I just wanted to clarify why I believe the fairytale films of Barbie, the ones more timeless in nature, had such an impact on me and many others; beyond the pink, sparkly, and silly. They looked like jokes and sounded like jokes… but surprisingly could have engaging or contemplative moments. The films should definitely be elevated beyond just being pink girly nonsense and being the origin of Bibble. And Tika. Dear god Tika is so cursed.

Omg and I can’t forget; a commentator below mentioned it but the music. Often the music and songs could be very well put together (especially in Barbie and the Pauper) and as one commenter said below, certain ballets such as Swan Lake were definitely films that had an appreciation for the music of the source material.

Ok, 2000s CGI aside, this adaptation wasn't that bad. Plus I think that the design of the Nutcracker was actually quite good, cartoony (especially when compared to the other characters, starting by Barbie/Clara) but proportionated enought to look convincing and relatable. I know it doesn't mean much but he's waaaaaaaay better than the Nutcracker from the 2010 movie. You can see him as an attractive guy turned into a wooden toy. Anyway, isn't Kelly supposed to know the Nutcracker story already? I mean, she was practicing for that very ballet. I'm waiting for Barbie in a Christmas Carol now.

To be fair, the CGI in this is wonky because it's early 2000s CGI on a direct-to-video budget. But the animation DID improve in the movies as time went on. I really hope he considers reviewing more of the Barbie movies at some point, because even though they're largely supposed to be movie-length commercials, the cast and crew making them could've easily just spat out something in five minutes, but they didn't. They actually put time and effort into making each one special and making sure they taught the intended young audience a lesson. "Princess and the Pauper" and "The Island Princess" are the two that I think come the closest to rivaling a Disney production.
