I enjoyed the first one and most of the second. I knew before Voyage of the Dawn Treader was filmed that they would have trouble adapting it to film without changes, so I try to give them a little slack. The structure of the book was almost more of an anthology of shorter adventures without a primary enemy. IMO, that doesn't lend itself to an easy film adaptation, but I thought it was decent at least.

The Lion Witch and Wardrobes is pretty good. Prince Caspian was okay, they added some stupid plot devices. Voyage of the Dawn Treader is definitely the worst. They add even more stupid plot devices that weren’t needed. I recommend reading the book or viewing the BBC movie. Also the BBC got one book further in with the Silver Chair. If you haven’t seen the BBC movies I would recommend a watch. They aren’t terrible for when they came out.

The thing is, the book didn't have a Big Bad; it was just a quest to reach the edge of the world, where Aslan's country was supposed to be. And it was a series of episodic mini-adventures. Prince Caspian was also a somewhat shorter story, and filler was added to that movie as well. In fact, when BBC made the older versions of these movies, they merged Caspian and Dawn Treader together, which was helpful since their stories happen close gether chronologically. And Eustace is pretty much himself from the book. You're not supposed to like him. He deserves everything he gets!

And Caspian was TOO BLASTED OLD in the Prince Caspian movie. Why are High Kings and Queens booted because THEY are too but still younger than Caspian. And Fifteen is too old to be considered a child in that movie. (I just had to vent)
@sterlingmuse58084 жыл бұрын
@@ryangreen6255 Peter and Susan were too old because a)they were starting to become adults and forget about Narnia and b) they already got to be royalty for decades before leaving Narnia the first time. Meanwhile, Caspian is a part of Narnia completely; there would be no point for him to leave because that is where he is meant to be. Also, part of the point of the book is that even though the Telmarine's ancestors were jerks and conquered Narnia, they still inherited the throne and the resulting country after the story is a mixture of both Talking Animals and Telmarines. Caspian's family line goes on to rule Narnia until the actual end of time, too.

Yeah this is the only one that was adapted into a movie and I also read the book for, and the book is just an adventure book with short moral stories with the ending being the Edge of the World, the quest adaptation in the movie made it feel so much more like a video game design and then defeat the Final Boss.
@ZagLineGaming4 жыл бұрын
Spot on with the Tilda Swinton observation. She was literally only there for the trailers. She's not even mentioned in the books. She died 1200 years ago as far as Caspian is concerned. The Magician's Nephew, (The 6th book) is her origin story. The twist is the book turns out to be a prequel about 2/3s in. I don't really think that's a spoiler because about 20 years ago they reordered the books to be Chronological even though doing so ruins that twist.
@VicenteTorresAliasVits4 жыл бұрын
There are many trilogies out there where the main actors appear in each installment, even if it's just a pointless cameo, because they sign contracts in advance. It becomes even more obvious when they make a 4th movie and the cast is different (like PIRATES OF THE CARIBBEAN). And one could even make the argument that we didn't need to see Peter & Susan here either (whether they were in the book or not).

Did anyone else notice that Caspian's accent changed between the second and third movies? In 'Prince Caspian', Ben Barnes gave the character a Spanish accent, but then changed it to a posh English accent in 'Dawn Treader'. Personally, I liked the Spanish one better; Caspian was of Telmarine blood, a member of a foreign nation who invaded and conquered Narnia after the Pevensies left. The different accents reflected the cultural and political diversity of the Narnian universe, which made it feel much more fleshed out and interesting.

@lindaschreifels98894 жыл бұрын
@@oliviarogers3559 but that’s not the accents fault. That’s just the way he’s communicating. It could be possible that in the second movie whenever he’s speaking to Narnians and the Pevensie children he’s not speaking in his native dialect and that his words and thoughts when addressing other Telmarines are being translated for the viewer. With that interpretation, the issue comes because your translating as you’re speaking and things get lost in the translating process because the nuances that your native language allows is lost. And even if that interpretation is wrong, there’re plenty of people with strong accents that are mature and in positions of leadership. To me, it just comes off badly to say that an accent makes a person appear ill suited for positions of authority.

As one that thought the movie was pretty average, I think they perfectly nailed Eustace. Do you know how the book begins? The first sentence reads: "There was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it." That encapsulates Eustace until he finds redemption. He is an ass from the beginning, his foul character is expressed in his turning into a dragon, and he remains so until he is freed by Aslan. Also notice, Eustace doesn't really find redemption or earn it by transforming himself. It's given to him, unmerited, without consideration for his previous actions. Aslan simply grants him new life. If you know C. S. Lewis (especially from his first Narnia book), this encapsulates his Christian convictions perfectly.

The bits about collecting the magical swords to lay them at the table of Aslan to stop the evil green mist was all added in the film to try and give it more of a connected, flowing narrative, but all it does it highlight how forced an awkward the idea is when it's shoved into a more loosely-told Odyssey-like adventure. The only scene from the movie I remember is when Eustace is whining about the journey, mockingly saying "Oh, we have to go find seven magical steak knives and put them on the dinner table of a talking lion!" And, yeah, that's a pretty accurate summary of why it's such a bad adaptation, as well as a mediocre film.

I have a love/hate relationship with this movie. I love the casting and Eustace was casted great! Reepicheep is awesome as usual. But the plot was a mess. They just took bits and pieces from the book and slapped it over a whole new goal. The whole point was that C.S. Lewis always wanted to write a book based around a seafaring adventure similar to The Odyssey. The adventure was about finding old friends of Caspian’s father that his Uncle basically sent away to their deaths. The swords were not magic, it was just how they could identify them as most of them did in fact die. Reepicheep was hoping to find Aslan’s Country on the journey to prove that it’s real (his faith is so strong you can’t help but feel it yourself). Eustace is pretty spot on, but they drag it out quite a bit. Lucy was a bit jealous of Susan but it wasn’t centered around that but rather Lucy’s insecurities on how people view her. It was more so that Lucy thought Susan was good at socializing. Susan was popular and so confident. The movie dragged out a lot of these issues when really each island was basically an episode where each character had their own character growth/reflecting. Nightmare island wasn’t even a huge plot line. It was simply another island where people had to overcome their fears and have faith. Reepicheep and Lucy ultimately having the strongest faith. The book was a katabasis. The movie just mushed it altogether.

This was one of my favorites of the books. In all fairness, they did a good job adapting it using what they had to work with because the book didn’t have much of a plot either. It was more of an episodic adventure with each island they reached being a different chapter in an overall story. The movie needed an overall plot to connect them all and this was the best they could do.

This was the film that took the most liberties from the source material, which is said as a fan of C.S. Lewis. The Voyage of the Dawn Treader is my father's favorite of the Narnia books because of the reception and baptism of Eustace. He also likes the first line of the book,"There once was a boy called Eustace Clarence Scrubb, and he almost deserved it." The purpose of the voyage is to sail into the Great Eastern Sea to find seven lost lords, who were loyal to Caspian IV (Caspian's father) and forced to flee when Miraz took the throne. Once they got past the Lone Islands, they would be sailing into uncharted waters, with the only knowledge being if they sailed to the utter east, they would reach the end of the world of Narnia and beyond would be Aslan's Country. So each new island they came across was a new island charted. The part able the seven swords was added and the Dark Island made more dramatic than in the book. But I agree, it was effectively just another Narnia film, which is probably because it was a different studio from the last two. I grew up with the old BBC Serials and then the Disney films and I still enjoy all of them. Netflix has the rights to new Narnia films/tv shows, so we'll see what they come up with.

The thing that made Narnia fans maddest was that Eustace’s redemption scene which is SO emotional in the book is inter played with the dumb dark island stuff. I would’ve been up for perhaps the Star’s daughter joining them on the quest for a while, and her being pals with Lucy. Instead, the cartoony dark island crap took the focus away. Minority here: I'm actually pleased with this film. Of all the books to adapt, this & The Magician's Nephew would be the hardest. The book didn't have a grand or even consistent antagonist; it was just a journey to the lands where the sun rose. Every chapter was a new island & conflict that had to be faced, which made it perfect for young readers who had just started moving to more challenging literature. As such, I accept the compromises the filmmakers made to bring it to the big screen. Because it's not a book anymore. It's meant to be consumed in one go.

Reading the book years ago, I remember it being very episodic, like 20000 Leagues Under the Sea. @brianalambert11924 жыл бұрын
Yeah this is one of those books that was a bit more of a road trip. The original story, there were 9 lords who served Caspian's father, and they were sent across the sea to "explore" but in reality Caspian's uncle just wanted to get rid of them. So Caspian vowed that once Narnia was at peace again he would go searching for the 9 lords to either bring them home or discover what had happened to them and avenge their deaths if necessary. They also intended to sail to Aslan's country, mapping the way, with Reepicheep following a prophecy from his birth that he should journey to the east. The movie added the mist as a bit of a foe, and then played up the different characters' "arcs". In the book Lucy does feel temptation when she is reading the spell book to turn herself into such a beautiful woman that the wars were fought over her. But she saw a picture of Aslan looking at her in the book and felt ashamed, so she didn't. That was the beginning and end of it. Edmund, if I remember correctly, did have a fight with Caspian at the pool that turned things to gold, but it had more to do with Caspian wanting to use the pool to make Narnia wealthy, trying to order them into secrecy, and Edmund firing back, and again, Aslan came into the picture, they saw him, forgot about what they were arguing about, and they named the pool Deathpool and left. Caspian's arc in the book was more about wanting to go to Aslan's country and never return, but everyone reminded him that he is king and he has that responsibility. There was a subplot that someone needed to go to Aslan's country in order to free the last three lords from a spell that kept them asleep for years. So someone needed to go. And in the end it was Reepicheep. Honestly, the one character arc they got perfectly is Eustace. That kid is playing him just as annoying as he was in the book, pitch perfect. Until he became a dragon and was so miserable he actually started reflecting on how badly he had treated everyone.

Although, if you really wanted to make a faithful adaptation, it would work better as a mini-series that one movie. The book is literally a bunch of adventures on a sea voyage.
