21:03 "You know, I just can't believe things have gotten so bad with fanbases that there's no way back. I mean, I know we're geeky, we obsess over little things, and we probably get too invested. But we've gone from being bullied in our lives to being bullies ourselves." Such an armor piercing statement.

But for the most part it's not the same people. With the rise of 'geek chic' and the cult of nostalgia, a lot of people who were never geeks or fans in their youth are now, be sure it's popular. Comic book movies are mainstream successes, and gaming is a normal activity for everyone, but those who were ostracised as geeks before, are still ostracised as the wrong sort of geek now, as the new rush of people either scrabble to establish their own in groups and out groups, or simply crush the older fans under weight of numbers.

Gotta be honest, I'm not sure I've ever met anyone crueler (in the pettier ways at least) than some of the 'oldschool' geeks. A bunch of 'em are great people, but I've been at this for some years, and seen some heinous shit from far too many people who should know better. Enough that it seems, eh... naive, to play No True Scotsman.

That's a great message and all, sorry if I sound like a dick, but it's kind of off when people being called misogynists wasn't the community being dicks to each other, but the people behind the movie and Sony. I'm sorry, but Doug didn't do the controversy justice, Midnight's Edge made a few good videos explaining it. Though this video did remind me of how on the Internet, no one cares about opinions and everyone likes to have pissing contests instead of acting like mature adults.

I'm a feminist and I didn't like the movie. It sucked because of the writing, cliches, and stereotypes. Just because something has women doesn't mean you have to support it. So long as you don't hate it *because* it has women, it's not sexist lmao. I supported the concept but the final product was shit.
@tsstevensts

My problem with the movie wasn't that it was women. One of the problems I had with it was it seemed almost written as a response to the who misogyny issue, the gamergate controversy. I love the fact that it was women in the leading roles, but they were not good characters. Male or female, these are supposed to be role models to young girls arn't they? How would you define the characters? Dumb, jerk, douche, gadfly, troll, ass, done.

I didn't see it because I didn't have time (looking for a stable job). The main actresses looked like they were bringing something interesting to the table, but then I realized it was a big corporate attempt to revive a groundbreaking franchise of the past. Instead of making the new Ghostbusters all girls, maybe they should've had more main actors (of both defined genders in scientific sense i.e. which reproductive organs defined body gender), maybe make romantic interests between some of them, and some ghosts actually trying to drive a wedge between the team so their big master plan would look like it would go off unhindered. But the final product looks like it wanted to cause unrest and hatred in the online community.

David Cappadoccia When it comes to the dislike for this movie the only thing I strongly disagree with are the racial attacks aimed at Leslie Jones. The people sending her racist tweets and harassing Melissa McCarthy for her weight are despicable. They're actresses playing roles written for them and are not responsible for the movie being bad, so I do believe the irrational hate aimed at them from that Milo guy & his followers is sexist. But I digress. The movie was terrible, but I have no issue with the actresses.

I'm a feminist too, and I liked the movie in a guilty pleasure kind of way, haha. What I don't understand though is why some feminists feel like they have to worship this movie because the men were changed to women, I found the idea really great, but so much effort went into saying this was a gift to women. Like I would personally just like an ORIGINAL GOOD movie where the main characters were women, not just a gender bent version of another movie. Idk those were my thoughts.

I am of the opinion that Paul Feig has created something of a special grey area where it might not be sexist to hate THIS one specific movie because women were cast in the roles. Yes, your statement is accurate in general, but if it has women for the specific express purpose of pandering then I think Paul Feig is being sexist and thus if you hate it for his pandering sexism then you are safe. (That is the trick to landing in that grey area. It is still possible to be sexist if you hate it because it has women and not because it is pandering to women with its casting choices.)

If they're one thing I can say is at least he was honest about how he felt with how both sides were overacting. I personally didn't see the film and said I wouldn't because it looked bad to me and was a poor attempt at a reboot that did not need to exist. But if people liked the film more power to them I guess.

Grow up, you hypocritical child. I also hate the film, but I'm not an idiot when I criticize it.

Well, I could of guessed when he said the original Ghostbusters didn't do flips when the protopacks were like 250 pounds, I would love to see someone being able to do that. And not to mention that the beams had a kick in every shot. I did not get the action in ghostbusters. Shooting them kills the ghosts? Cause it felt like bullets and fists, they just tried to make it badass, but if you were to think between the original and the remade. Well, it feels better to know they carry packs that could tear fabric of spacetime with their nuclear powered photopacks.

I don't think you understand the definition of a flop. This movie hasn't even broken even yet. The box office numbers do not equal profit to Sony. First off, those numbers are the total amount brought in by the theaters, which a good chunk of that stays with the theaters themselves. Second, those numbers also include free tickets that Sony gave away as part of their marketing promotion, which is profit to the theaters, but even further loss to Sony. Last I checked, this movie was at ~$180 million worldwide. It has been stated that it needs to gross a bare minimum of $300 million just to break even, and even that number is extremely low (I would argue it's closer to $400 million for the break even point). The director, Paul Fieg, is on record stating that it needs to gross *at least* $500 million to make a profit, and even that is an extremely low number, when you factor in the marketing costs associated with it (including the aforementioned free tickets). This movie is still a flop, and it's unlikely that it will even reach the break-even point.

@@doomguy8324 What can't it just go out of business? In a world where humans & animals suffer immensely all over the world in countless senseless ways, your review of a shitty restaurant is astoundingly insignificant. How much better if you put effort into eliminating food waste? (40% of food in the U.S. is wasted.) That would help to feed hungry people while putting FAR less strain on the natural world to grow, process, package, & transport food that just ends up in our landfills producing methane. Oh, I know why people defend your "right" to complain! Because you have the LUXURY of being able to go to a restaurant in the first place & because solving REAL problems is HARD. It takes EFFORT to learn about problems, to find people working toward solutions, to come up with innovative ideas, to educate other people. That's all too much WORK! Complaining on the internet is easy. So you delude yourself into thinking you have an obligation to complain in order to make their restaurant improve or "change" or some other nonsense. Did you speak to the manager or owner of the restaurant to voice your complaint in person? No. Because you're a COWARD. You only complain when you can hide behind the anonymity of the internet. If you really want to help a restaurant improve, then talk to the people at the restaurant instead of posting a review that they may never see!
@DonnaBrooks
@DonnaBrooks 4 жыл бұрын
This comment should be at the top of the comments. It should have a lot more likes. There are so many REAL problems in the world, but people on the internet feel so ENTITLED! They're entitled to give their opinion. They're entitled to hate OTHER people for having a THEIR opinions! They're entitled to try to make a movie fail. They're entitled to harass fans who like something they don't like instead of just letting them enjoy it. They're entitled to insult people. They're entitled to manipulate the audience vote (by either review bombing or deliberately inflating the ratings on movies for their own agenda rather than giving honest & fair reviews) on Rotten Tomatoes based on their hate & prejudice so that RT audience scores can no longer be trusted by many of us. They feel entitled to have all movies made JUST FOR THEM & if a movie isn't made for them, then they feel entitled to give it a bad rating & bash it in comment sections out of spite. They feel entitled to complain when they are not the center of the universe. That is the mental maturity of a 2-year-old. If I were a studio exec, I'd deliberately ignore such negative, hostile, mean-spirited, entitled fans.

"Ghostbusters 2016 had better action than the Original" Maybe because Ghostbusters isn't an action franchise, it's a comedic Sci Fi franchise. The excitement isn't suppose to be about doing flips and punching ghosts, it's suppose to be about the tension of the scene, the stakes of the outcome. It's fine if this movie did something different so it could stand on it's own legs, but don't compare the action sequence to a non action film.

Extreme Ghostbusters wasn't trying to remake the original movie, it was its own series within the same universe. If the new movie wasn't trying to bank on nostalgia so much, it could have been something new and different. That's probably one of the biggest problems with remakes, they don't try to do their own thing but instead try to cash in on what made the original great. And that is the feeling I got when I watched the new movie.
@ATthemusician
@ATthemusician 8 жыл бұрын
the lack of action and skill in the original is admirable. it shows that they're just starting off and are obviously not that good at what they do and at the end of the day they're just some normal guys. its kinda stupid to just make them masters at what they do right from the start.
@Kos4Evr

Of course there is no action. These are scientists not martial arts masters, ex special forces and this certainly isn't the matrix. These are guys that have a hard enough time walking around with those heavy proton packs on their backs. I mean are we really supposed to take 4 women who hardly look like they take physical fitness seriously when they are doing flips and shit? That would make sense in a movie like Mallcop but not Ghostbusters. Seriously, when did they have the time to make this new gear? So many things this movie does so horribly wrong for something that has the Ghostbusters name. If this had been its own movie with its own story and its own way of doing things it could have been great. They could still have had the cameos and occasional nods to Ghostbusters without constantly reminding us that its trying to be Ghostbusters but not Ghostbusters at the same time. Its clear that the makers wanted to do something different and by all rights it should have been something different.

I think its because there was more of a social stigma in the way kids have things that boys do and things that girls do. Sure some would do it regardless, but a lot of people would keep the fact they fans of an 80s film about these 4 older guys hunting ghosts. Its like how a lot of people who like anime are embarrassed to admit it because they don't want to be judged. No would one would expect a guy to like My Little Pony before but because of the large number of outspoken fans its sort of acceptable though I think there is still a stigma.

But the real controversy is really a political thing, and Doug doesn't (as far as I know) really talk about politics on his channel (except for Fair Use). I do wish that the people who were criticizing him made it more clear why they're angry with him. The only way that I found out was because one of them mention another KZbinr who cover the subject matter better. In the end though, I still love this review, despite it's flaws.

How I would fix the movie 1. Have a funnier cast like Tina Fey, Amy Poeler, Regina King, and Anna Farris 2. Have this film set in the same universe as the original. Maybe Venkman, Ray, and Winston are still good friends and in business but they're starting to decline due to their age catching up with them. So they start looking for replacements. 3. Have the leader be the daughter of Egon, he passed away but taught her everything she needs to know about ghosts so she follows in his footsteps. 4. Have the original cast mentor the new team. 5. Have the villain be someone more interesting and funnier 6. Make the humor much more natural and less obnoxious 7. Show that the new team all have particular skills and personalities that they bring to the table like maybe one is a former Marine, one is a psychic, one is a scientist and the other is an engineer. Sometimes the the internet needs a poke, other times it needs an atom bomb. This is because sometimes the only thing that can cut through the vitriol and the rage is to point out how absurd things have gotten. Yeah the message in the review can be considered preachy. To be honest with the world the world has become more jaded. Is that the fault of the critics and the artists? No. Is it the fault of the art forms? again no. Here in the US we were just getting better at understanding each other through the internet, back in the 90's, when we found out government was and will always be corruptible and money is a five letter synonym. We also had to deal with the aftermath of finding out that after 70 years, we were as vulnerable as everyone else to terrorism. So has the world gotten worse or the people in it? again not giving any answers because the as a species we are one colossal dysfunction junction.

Kent Henry I'd say it's the other way around. The new Ghostbusters referenced the old movie, but they mostly did their own thing. They had a plot, for one; I watched the original recently, and I'm frankly not impressed. When I first watched Star Wars 7, I found myself making a detailed chart in my head matching all of the characters and events back to the original. It's practically the same script with different actors.

What I really, REALLY wish is that next time I'm playing Star Wars Jedi Knight, or watching a fanmade KZbin short movie, or bing-watching any the Mandalorian, people won't bring up conversations about all the wrongs that were done somwhere in the past. Just once, JUST, ONCE, I want to enjoy Star Wars like it was always meant to be enjoyed, and not just used in a debate on how to properly do franchises by memorizing every single time someone felt remotely hurt by it. The day that watching fun franchises become nothing but political debates about how entertainment works, is the day where religion is used only as an excuse to lecture people about how to live their lives.

I won't lie. Movie was painful to watch. Sucks that the actors got fucked over so bad by how awful Sony and Paul Fieg are. Really wanted this to be good. It wasn't though. Annoying special effects, about 4 jokes were actually funny or at least ok, and it's just the original story with alot of pointless shit and things that are just fucking annoying to think about. Not to mention, think about how pathetic marketing was. Fabricating fake reviews, leaving only misogynistic comments while deleting the comments that actually brought up good points and decent judgement insulting the fanbase, reducing the dislike bar on videos, and distributing dislikes on trailers evenly by posting trailers on different channels. Why did it have to be so trashy?

It was brilliant. You have a reboot nobody wanted, at a time when people are tired of reboots. It turns out, not very good.... So do you cut your losses, and admit it's gonna fail? Or do you manufacture outrage, make watching your movie a political statement? People will defend your garbage to the end of the earth, because now it's personal. They will buy tickets, multiple tickets, and write good reviews, all in the name of fighting some perceived enemy. In the long run it didn't help much, but this movie would have been a colossal flop, instead of just a "meh" flop without that strategy. Yea, it was underhanded and dirty, but hey money is money.

The thing I have to really disagree with you on is the action. In the original they were scientists and that is how they played it. There was no "action" because it would have looked stupid for them to all of a sudden to be busting out kung fu. Suspension of disbelief in a Ghostbusters movie might be a bit laughable, but making scientists in action heroes out of nowhere is a huge strike against the reboot.

Nostalgia Critic got it right with the fanbases. It is good to have something you love but to attack others and force them to love it to is completely wrong and selfish. Today, one tiny opinion can trigger an entire war between two fanbases. The most prominent being the gaming community and how repulsive and putrid some of the fanbases there can be, and while there is a good side to it and thank God that the good side is the majority, it doesn't cover the fact that there exists a bully within the community that tries to whip others to enjoy what they enjoy.

Seriously?! You don't even know why people were so pissed off about this? It's not entitlement, it's not the internet corrupting people, it's not about ruining the original, it's not anything you mentioned in this video. It's Sony personally attacking its own customers in a sad attempt at damage control. The Angry Video Game Nerd was at the center of it and you've worked with him in the past. How could you not know?! The thing is, I've never been so disgusted with a film company or a director in my life, and so I didn't want to give them money no matter how the movie turned out.

Knew immediately he'd address the insane SJW, feminazi nonsense surrounding the early bad expectations of this movie--he is friends with James Rolfe after all. This was good. Doug has evolved into a wonderful filmmaker. Some of his edge and original comedy may have come apart, but he's replaced with clever, well-written material that satirizes pop culture--like South Park! Love you, Doug. Keep growing. And eventually you''ll produce a film like Rolfe--except you'll wait until you have a script that doesn't sort of scream "suckage." Because you write pretty well.

That they hire as a secretary. That is nonsense. As for Family guy, and the simpsons et cetera, those are all perfect examples of male bashing in society, as are the recent strings of commercials with cuckolded men too stupid to work a dishwasher, or park a car without their wives smart, sassy, bitchy directions. The only reason those cartoons and shows arent as bad is because in spite of the retarded level intellect the men display, they still have Super attractive wives and huge houses and families, displaying that in spite of being morons, these men have still succeeded. Funny that you would actually try to argue against things that are blatant and easily proven simply by observing.

I watched the movie, and yeah, I agree with Doug. It was just kinda average. I loved the blonde lady and Patty, I even have a soft spot for Kevin even though his stupidity made me want to strangle him. It wasn't amazing, but it wasn't horrible either. It was just average. And of course there is the huge irony to all of this unneeded controversy: If it weren't for these two extremes, the movie wouldn't have done as well as it did. When it came out, i went to Family Video in order to rent it, and every copy was sold out. A movie that everyone said was going to be garbage, and it was completely sold out. The people who wanted to destroy it, ironically made it a success.

1) You didn't factor in the advertising budget. So yes it was a flop. 2) It fell short of the projected 500 million to green light a sequel - which is something that Sony was aiming for so again, it was a flop. 3) Also you haven't considered that even if it meets its total budget, *which it didn't*, investors want a return and a substantial one. They aren't interested in breaking even (which as I have stated it did *not* do.) Again, counts as a flop. 4: Sony was unable to recoup the loss through merchandise. Again. A flop. The bottom line is this. Money in was greater than money out. And as a result investors were not happy. So by all the commonly held criteria in assessing a films success or failure this movie is.. wait for it... a flop.

It also helps as an audience member if you don't have a lot of emotional attachment to the original works, while at the same time you *do* have an interest in sci-fi or the super natural. Sadly for the makers of GBATHC there weren't enough of these people to sustain the profit required to make it a success. And their response to that was not positive.

+MastermindEpsilon The World War Z movie was fucked because they focused to much on a single, if extremely and stupidly lucky, character. Had they done it like the book was, it would've been a better movie. For instance, Israel wasn't a major part of the book, and about one part of the book is actually dedicated to talking about it. Also that whole singing makes the zombies more aggressive thing was kind of bullshit. That place constantly had vehicles coming and going, helicopters flying around, and just a lot of noise in general, but it's the singing that makes them able to climb the wall. Thanks for ruining a great book Hollywood.

Honestly, I think from all points of view, the biggest problem is the fact that all the leads were females for the wrong reasons. BECAUSE THEY'RE FEMALES! :D"

Actually, I'm pretty sure they cast all of them because they're all very funny comedians. Like, you know, the original cast. Kristen Wiig and Kate Mckinnon are especially being sought after for their comedy right now. And whether or not the script and directing was shit (it was), there's no denying that the actresses are hilarious, even if you don't particularly care for their style of humor.

Yeah, I think it is just confusing if you just change the genders on a classing movie for no reason at all. I could get it if it was the kids of the persons in the original and they continued their work, but as a reboot/remake/whatever, it makes no sense. Would be as if the Ninja Turtles was swapped out with dogs for no reason in a reboot. I don't have anything against it what so ever, but it is still confusing and meaningless. Especially when they swapped ALL the genders - not just a few to make it more diverse and targeted towards a broader audience.

I hate it and didn't even see it. "HOW CAN YOU HATE SOMETHING YOU DIDN'T SEE!?" Simple; I hate the way it was marketed. Sony was deleting any constructive criticisms on the trailer, screencapping the 'sexist' troll comments, crying to news sources about how oppressed they are, getting their cast put on the nightly show where they objectified men and got a laugh from it. I just find the whole marketing sickening. If they had just posted a trailer, and did nothing about the dislikes that followed. A: There wouldn't be as many dislikes and B: My opinion of it would be my opinion on Suicide Squad. A resounding "Meh, not interested, hope those that see it enjoy it though." But nope, they had to go make it in-group/out-group. Though, I'm most furious about their Jimmy Kimmel appearance. But that's a completely different can of worms.

I will admit, I was one of those fans that absolutely HATED the movie from the trailers, and I was fighting against those fans that were willing to give it a chance. I do regret some of the comments I posted, and I realize what I did wrong. I should just take this as a huge lesson and do my best never to do it again. I never formed my hatred of Ghostbusters (2016) based on the fact of intimidation, nor am I a women hater. (I'm a girl, that would be kind of awkward.) I formed it because I'm sick and tired of remakes. Originally, I felt like remaking such a classic was just a disrespectful cash grab. Even though I didn't like the fact of there being an all-female cast, I'm okay with all-female casts in other situations, but I just couldn't imagine it with women only. Plus, the way the feminists were praising this movie and calling all us haters sexist was grating on my nerves, which is where I lashed out on them, as I knew that wasn't really the majority's argument. I will NEVER watch this film, and a lot of the hostile feelings I have for this movie still remain. I must admit, I'm actually okay that it's average, because I pray that will lead it to being forgotten in the end. It was stupid to get worked up over a MOVIE when there are way worse problems that need to be overcome in this world. Arguing over it was such a waste of energy.

The problem with the film in regard to the female cast wasn't that it had female ghostbusters. I think what really irked a lot of people was the extremely transparent agenda that was being pushed. A lot of the backlash was misdirected irritation at the forced diversity agenda that has been present in a LOT of Hollywood films in the last few years - in everything from Ghostbusters to Star Wars. Girl power this, girl power that, and it's really not even subtle. And it's not even that there's an issue inherent in the concept of having female leads. That's FINE. GREAT, even. Some of the most memorable characters in cinema history have been great female leads, like Ripley or Sarah Connor. The PROBLEM arises when the characters - all of them - are female SIMPLY for the sake of them being female and pushing that agenda when it really wasn't necessary. You could have had two male, two female ghostbusters. You could have had 3 female, 1 male ghostbusters. But they went with ALL female ghostbusters. And as for the men in the film...they were LUDICROUSLY useless and stupid - and it was clearly the result of someone trying WAY too hard to push the woman power envelope by undercutting male characters. Fair enough, this was often done to female characters in the past, but it doesn't mean it's good writing. That's the problem. This is a thinly veiled feminist agenda piece using the title Ghostbusters as cover. It's incredibly obvious that a lot of this - even down to essentially castrating a ghost - that this was meant to be a girl power piece. And in DOING that, they missed the mark ENTIRELY as to what Ghostbusters is. Ghostbusters never made an issue that the characters were male. It never even MENTIONED Winston being black. Nobody cared. But here, they are OBSESSED with these characters being female. IF you want to write a girl power piece, DO IT, but don't use GHOSTBUSTERS as that vehicle. If you want to write a GHOSTBUSTERS film...do it, but write it AS A GHOSTBUSTERS FILM. If they hadn't tried SO hard to push that agenda, this could have been a decent film. What would have been wrong with having, say, Thor as an actually intelligent character who is one of the main team members and not an idiotic piece of eye candy meant to subvert traditional roles in what they THOUGHT was a clever bit of writing but was in fact VERY painfully obvious? Early theories had it that Paul Rudd and Seth Rogan were going to be two of the Ghostbusters, but that idea was abandoned in favor of pushing this female power agenda. What kills me is...if they had actually used someone like Paul Rudd, and STILL included someone like Kristin Wigg, and had the characters written NOT AROUND GENDER but around them being interesting and fun characters...this could have been a legitimately good film. Even if they all HAPPENED to be women (statistically unlikely but ok) if they just HAPPENED to be women and they never even referenced it or made an effort to emasculate the male characters, who are all imbeciles, it could have been a lot better. They effectively killed their own agenda by insisting on that very agenda. Never write a character around their gender or race. That should be, whenever, possible, incidental, unless we're talking about something like a slavery-era film where a person's race would obviously be a part of the plot. Same goes with gender. Stop TRYING so hard and people will accept it. They LOVE Sigourney Weaver and Linda Hamilton, after all, and those films NEVER made their being female an issue. That's why they WORKED. If Sarah Connor had gone around going "see?!? GIRLS CAN DO IT TO!!"...it would have really soured Terminator.

This is my only issue with this episode of NC. The episode itself was brilliant and hilarious, truly one of their best, but they misrepresent the controversy by playing both sides as equal. The SJW bullcrap was coming from the people MAKING THE MOVIE, and the people who had and actual issue with this were depicted as either Ghostbuster purists, or idiot mennanists. None of the ACTUAL arguments were represented by the naysayers, just the caricatures the director and his fellow SJW trash created themselves. In attempting to appear unbiased, NC actually skewed the controversy to downplay one side's vitriol and ignore the other entirely.

How is it "politically correct" to have all 4 leads be female? The term "political correctness" is just a term used by people like you to describe something that you don't like without actually having an honest discussion on the merits or disadvantages of having a female reboot. Have you actually seen the 2016 Ghostbusters? I have, and it wasn't bad, actually. Not that good (certainly not as good as the original), but until you see the movie for yourself, anything you have to say about Ghostbusters 2016 is invalid. I'm just sick of all the people online who whine and bitch about a movie (especially ones featuring prominent female/minority leading roles) before they actually see it, or worse yet, when they flat out refuse to see it at all.

It's another case of them completely missing the point of the original. The Ghostbusters aren't supposed to be macho action heroes doing ninja flips and delivering "badass" quips, they're a bunch of misfits who are constantly in over their heads and making it up as they go along... that's what makes them *FUNNY*. Doug saying he likes the "action" better in this one is the equivalent of someone saying they preferred the lightsaber duels in the prequels even though they have the emotional depth of a set of keys being dangled in front of a toddler.
