Space Jam: A New Legacy (also known as Space Jam 2) is a 2021 American live-action/computer/traditionally animated sports comedy film produced by Warner Animation Group and distributed by Warner Bros. Pictures. The film is directed by Malcolm D. Lee from a screenplay by Juel Taylor, Tony Rettenmaier, Keenan Coogler, Terence Nance, Jesse Gordon and Celeste Ballard.[6] The film is a standalone sequel to Space Jam (1996) and is the first theatrically-released film to feature the Looney Tunes characters since Looney Tunes: Back in Action (2003). The film stars basketball player LeBron James as a fictional version of himself; Don Cheadle, Khris Davis, Sonequa Martin-Green and Cedric Joe star in live-action roles, while Jeff Bergman, Eric Bauza and Zendaya headline the Looney Tunes voice cast.

@@mrrunodan8119 But it didn't make any sense. They're presented for the whole movie as being programs in a huge simulation. How are they also Toons? Did they exist before the server was built? Were they trapped in it at some point? How could they just leave when they felt like it? Why didn't they leave before? Could any of the other programs there leave? Pennywise? King Kong? Superman? How do people enter or leave the simulation in the first place? TRON did a better job explaining the rules of that world, and they were consistent about it.

The biggest problem with the movie, besides it being terrible, is they tried playing it straight at all. It's fucking Looney Tunes. Who's going to think Bugs Bunny will actually die or think LeBron James can act as a main character? The reason the first movie worked, and still gets laughs today, is cause it's a joke. Even the scenario behind the drama is a joke and that's what makes it great. It knows not to take itself too seriously.

Yeah, too bad Back in Action was a big flop back in 2003 despite being a better Looney Tunes movie. Apparently WB is now planning a Space Jam-type wrestling movie with The Rock. He certainly has gotten enough blockbuster action clot by now to be able to star in that kind of movie and give WB that box office draw they want.

Also, Space Jam was quite the hit when it came out and has the nostalgia factor. I don't think Back in Action did well and doesn't have the 90s kid nostalgia going for it. This movie was to make a few bucks off of nostalgia, not to revive the Looney Tunes brand.

That whole middle section where the Looney Tunes gang have jumped ship and retreated into other movies/shows, with Bugs trying to get the gang back together again was, arguably, the best part of the movie. Honestly, they should've dropped the Space Jam/basketball thing and just had that second act be given its own movie. The plot of this old Warner Bros. property that was once the face of the company now gathering dust, and said characters are struggling to stay true to who they were/are while also trying to stay relevant and appeal to a modern audience is a really intriguing idea to me.

Which is strange because movie scenes aren't usually filmed in order, but the early scenes legitimately felt like they WERE filmed before the rest of the film was, especially all of the voice acting he does in this, so his acting seems to get more... not better, but just more acceptable.

The problem with the sequel is the same problem with Birdemic's sequel. When you mess up this much a second time and on purpose, it loses its charm.
@carsfan1995
@carsfan1995 3 жыл бұрын
What do you mean on purpose? What was Michael Jordan’s motivation to help? And no, “being nice” isn’t good enough. If that’s not good enough for modern female characters, it ain’t good enough for a 90s flick that people like do to their nostalgia. LeBron didn’t want to have the Looney Tunes as his team. Bugs was just using LeBron’s situation to get his friends back and when they were running out of time Lebron had to settle for them. It makes sense for Bugs’ original characterization of being a trickster and clever rabbit. He could’ve just used Marvin’s ship to get them by himself, however, because they all left willingly the first time around he needed a reason for all of them to get back together. LeBron’s situation gave them that reason get together. Additionally, having these funny, silly characters as a team helps Lebron’s character arc of having to not force his own way of doing things onto them. The toons had their special way of playing/contributing to basketball (except Porky which is why they had him rap because they didn’t know what to make his Looney power). Trying to play in Lebron’s way was more of detriment to them and actually help him realize what he was doing wrong with his kid. When he let the Looney Toons play in their style and with understanding the video games they were able to play better and have a good time doing so. Seeing his dad’s change of play style is why his son switched sides because he sees his dad being more accommodating to how others play. Where’s that progression with Michael? Like basic writing. Michael Jordan had no reason to help the Toons. He was just kidnapped by then and… never bothered leaving. It’s not like he had a previously established connection with them other than commercials that the movie was inspired by. He had no stakes in helping the Toons until the theme park owner threatened to take him as an attraction too. He takes the bet… even though he had no motivation that would reason why he would other than so he has something at stake. I’m sorry but in terms of story progress and character development, Space Jam 2 did it better. I was born in 1995. Space Jam was one of the few live action movies I watched as kid. I do have some nostalgic feelings for it. However when I watched it on HBOMAX I became more aware of the flaws it had and made me realized what I had already suspected with liking A New Legacy. I’m not going to pretend that their aren’t cringey or dumb stuff in the new film, but to ignore the original as this sacred cattle because of it being part of your childhood or nostalgia… Honestly it’s kind exciting to see what 2010s media becomes nostalgic for the teens/adults of the 2020s and 2030s. What were the favorite shows and movies those kids watched in the 2010s era.

Unintentionally Sympathetic: Marvin the Martian's treatment comes across as a mean-spirited use of a beloved character. Excluding the controversial and absent Pepé Le Pew, Marvin is the only main Looney Tune who doesn't get to join the team, with his role being nothing more than getting his ship stolen, being crushed by it, and getting ignored by everyone else when he asks for help. Doesn't help that Bugs is the one to start conflict with him, yet he gets off the hook entirely while Marvin pays. Bugs' behavior towards Marvin is even worse when you remember he longs for all the other Looney Tunes, treating all of them but him as family.

Here's how _I'd_ make Lola trying to be an amazon _funny:_ It's revealed that Lola was using her cartoon physics powers to beat the Amazon Challenges, but she gets disqualified because the Themyscrian judges found her "looniness" an unfair advantage to the other amazons. And Diana, feeling sympathy for Lola, whispers to the other judges who nod in satisfaction. And then Diana approaches a saddened Lola saying that while Lola _won't_ be an Amazon, she pulled some strings to get a _special royal_ job _just for her_ to use her wonderful, amusing gifts. To which Lola, with a _huge_ smile and large _puppy-dog eyes and a twitching nose_ says _"Really?_ And then it cuts to Lola dressed as a _court jester_ (maybe Harley Quinn's _Batman The Animated Series_ costume for a fun little Easter egg), _totally dead-inside_ using her "looniness" to perform comedy bits for the Amazons. Then, Lola pulls out an anvil and throws it in the air just standing under it and then it squashes her. Lola then pulls herself out _totally flattened_ with the Amazons laughing and then she "puffs" back and yells "WWHHHHHYYYY!!!!!!" like she was trying to end it all. Then it cuts to LeBron looking on in mild fear and Bugs watching smugly. Lola then looks to them, rips off the jester outfit and storms onto the spaceship.

Would honestly be a lot better than what they did with her. Honestly in general I can kind of agree with the NC that her appearance here is the "most 2021" way to handle her, since it really did just make her the "token female" of this time period instead of an actual character, kind of like the original did, (though personally I find the original version more entertaining than this one). It's really weird that they did so though, since her other portrayals elsewhere have her with her own personality and traits that can actually be entertaining.

@@Gamer3427 Thank you for agreeing with me :). I, too, agree with Doug's assessment that Lola is the "most 2021" way to do a female character. Also maybe this is just me and maybe it's kind of a nitpick, but I kind of resent what media does with women in media of how they're trying to "desexualize" female characters. Examples include removing Ms. Bellum and removing Ms. Keane's breasts in the _PowerPuff Girls_ 2016 reboot. It's like they're saying "conventionally" attractive women can't be good role models and that girls and women should be ashamed of themselves if they have naturally curvaceous bodies. This _isn't_ celebrating all body types. This is just _trading in one_ body preference for _another_ body preference. It's hypocritical as hell.
@Gamer3427
@Gamer3427 3 жыл бұрын
@@rogue7723 What I've found is that a lot of the big movements in media, and even just social change in general these days, tend to have a lot of hypocrisy in them. They start from a place of good intentions such as giving female characters more developed roles than being sex icons, or giving more representation to different things. The end product, however, often ends up trading one extreme for another and in some ways is arguably worse than the original because they portray the thing they're trying to change as "wholly wrong", when in reality most people fall into a range between the two. For example, women are allowed to be a bit sexual or have wants and needs beyond just being "strong and independent" in real life, and in many cases people are much better off if they rely on others at least some, rather than striving to be "perfect" and not need any help. There's been countless shows and movies that even try to drive that point home with well developed characters, but for some reason so many these days are moving away from that, or trying too hard to show that "women don't need to rely on anyone" as an attempt at being progressive, resulting in boring characters that are unrelaistic.

I think I was more interested in finding what characters were in the background than I was in the overall plot. I was also hoping to see more Bugs/Lola interactions, and see how they'd make Lola more interesting. She's such a blank slate in this movie, and I really hate that she barely even acknowledged Bugs. Creator Backlash: An artist for the movie, Dave Alvarez (who also draws many Looney Tunes comic books currently), did plenty of work on the movie's character designs and backgrounds. He went uncredited in the movie, which was a deeply upsetting experience for him and his family. He has since been critical and disdainful of the movie. An online campaign supporting him began when the story was picked up by the media. On July 30, 2021, the film finally credited most of the artists and collaborators on Twitter. This still left a bitter taste on fans’ mouths, who continue to clamor for them to be added to the actual movie credits for the home release. Joe Pytka, the director for the first Space Jam, ripped into the new one, finding that LeBron's story lacked the Reality Subtext that Michael Jordan's did, felt the various celebrities were unmemorable compared to the original's cameos (i.e. Bill Murray), thought Bugs Bunny was watered down, and admitted that he found it painful to watch through in over five sittings just to finish it. Certainly downplayed, but Gabriel Iglesias was disappointed to learn he was given the role of Speedy as Stunt Casting and not on the strength of the impression he’s been doing for years.

10:06 Gotta love the Kingdom Hearts references lately. XD Happy to see Doug being a fan with the series as recent. 😊 About the "Big Chungus" scene, funnily enough, the animator of that scene didn't even know that "Big Chungus" was a meme until after the movie was made. He thought they were referencing the original cartoon the meme was based on. XD Interestingly, from what I heard, Bugs Bunny in the final scene with Lebron in the movie was animated by someone who was an animator of the first Space Jam, 😊

I wanted to like Space Jam: A New Legacy. Despite its flaws, I still consider OG Space Jam to be a classic, I even think Back in Action is decent, but A New Legacy is a big part of what’s wrong with cinema today: - the animation is a downgrade from OG Space Jam - LeBron is portrayed as nowhere near as good a father as MJ - there didn’t need to be a sequel to Space Jam - young LeBron being scolded for gaming was terrible to see, especially since it brought back bad memories of some people I used to know - A New Legacy desperately tries to cram in as many references to other Warner Bros. IPs as possible - A New Legacy overall feels more like it was originally going to go straight to DVD (I feel the same way about Toy Story 4) - is this REALLY what they needed to do to put the Looney Tunes, some of the most celebrated cartoon characters EVER, back on the big screen? Was production on that Marvin The Martian movie REALLY THAT TROUBLED?!? I can forgive Norm of The North, Rock Dog and Monster Family for each just being “yet another bad kid’s movie”. They’re part of life. But then there are movies like The Emoji Movie (a shameless celebration of smartphone culture), Toy Story 4 (severely messes with an otherwise amazing movie series that didn’t need a 4th instalment), the 2019 Lion King remake (totally misses the point over why the original is the way it is) and this (the opening scene with young LeBron being told off for playing a handheld game, followed by young LeBron throwing his handheld away, almost made me want to walk out), which each cross at least one line that you just can’t cross! It’s time movie studios got their act together. Put more time and money into making original movies, make sequels to movies that really do need them and MAKE SURE THEY ARE GOOD, no more pointless remakes of classics, JUST GET YOUR ACT TOGETHER! As Mr. Enter said in his recent review of an episode of the new Magic School Bus cartoon, it’s actually RISKIER to remake an existing property than it is to make something original! If you make a bad movie that’s at least original, it could still gain a cult following in later years If you make a soulless remake of a much-loved classic, that remake will end up just being forgotten shortly after it arrives in cinemas Does anyone even remember the 2014 remakes of RoboCop and Annie? The 2015 remake of Cinderella? Anyone? Thought so.

I actually remember RoboCop 2014, but that's because of how disappointed in it I was. They threw in pointless references to the original, just to say "Hey! Remember this?! It's cool, right? RIGHT??" and that's it, and because of that they're completely meaningless. And what's worse, is, one of them makes absolutely no sense what-so-fucking-ever for the movie. They just did that because "Hey, it was in the first film! That means we're giving fans what they want!". The reference I'm talking about is, of course, where they keep his left hand. And it's not even a correct reference. In the original it was his entire left _arm_ that they said they managed to save, but then Bob Morton told them to replace it. Which makes sense, given the fact that they were going for total body prosthesis. But in this movie, they just fucking kept his left hand for no reason other than it was a reference, and a bad one, to the original. That's it. Apparently they were too stupid to realize that his robotic arm would absolutely pulverize his hand were he to attempt to grab something. And in the original, Alex Murphy was an outgoing guy with an emotional family life, which made the transition (and him getting his memories and humanity back) so much more compelling. In this one, he's so robotic and unemotional as a human, that his transition to a Cyborg might as well be just another Tuesday. Now, did the remake have some good points? Ehh, sure. The new design was cool, and they did some interesting things with the plot, but that's pretty much it. And The lead actor's extremely wooden acting in this, aside from the pointless (and in one case, totally stupid) references, just ruined the film for me. Not to mention that I think they went a bit overboard with one of the plot choices (they really didn't need to have not one, not two, but three corrupt cops in it to be the bad guys aside from the OCP CEO). Is it a good way to waste your brain for a couple of hours? Sure. But it's not something I'd write home about.
