I admire Berman's commitment to playing multiple versions of himself, even if the special effects haven't held up well. Who knew that even a misanthrope could be easily annoyed with himself?!

This whole episode, despite the comedy, is also the notion of "we really wouldn't want to meet ourselves" taken to a somewhat horrific notion. Here you get someone literally repopulating the world with people just like him and finding out, "Man, I am an absolute asshole."

For those curious about The Twilight Zone, may I recommend DIMENSIONS BEHIND THE TWILIGHT ZONE by Stewart Stanyard. This must-have book contains interviews with writers and actors connected to the original TZ. There's also some great behind the scenes photos from some of the episodes. This very episode with Shelly Berman is included in the book. Several photos even give the audience a peek at how they manipulate the camera to make the viewer feel like the subway car was moving next to the actor. The book is currently available to order on AMAZON.

I knew someone like this character who thought the world would be better if everyone was like him. Sadly there are plenty of people like that today and I know for a fact they would regret it later on, because the guy I mentioned found someone like him and grew not only to hate that person but himself later on. Came out a completely changed man.

With a title like this, the one thing I would fix about the plot is the ending. I would have the character TRY to fix the world but gind he can't. Breaking down at the realization. Then we would learn the truth that everything after reading the book was in his head. He so wanted to rid the world of people that he convinced himself he had the power and was experiencing a delusional hallucination. It started with simply ignoring the presence of the landlady and then everyone around him but escalated to him inventing non existent versions of himself to replicate the world. We could find out he started just acting like no one was around him, catching the attention of his coworkers perhaps thinking he was being a jerk but then creating genuine concern as he was running around to himself. He was now so trapped in his own internal world he wished himself into mentally that he had no idea he was taken I to custody and now a hopless case in an institution. Doubly trapped on the outside as on the inside with no idea and the most ironic part being that it doesn't really matter. The only real world to him now is the one he invented to escape the one he was in but now it is just as bad and worse. Also, if he were ever to come out of his delusion he would find himself still in a worse place than he was as a result of his mindfully acts. The orgional is certainly happier but I feel this ending would be more impactful and closer to some of the greater twilight zone endings.
@cthulhupthagn57712 жыл бұрын
Interestingly, I believe this to be an adaptation of an old science fiction story by I want to say Ray bradbury. The concept was there's this really stubborn man living somewhere I think in the midwest. You cannot change his mind. If he thinks something, that's the final say. And as the story continues, it turns out that if he passionately believes in something, it happens. This becomes a concern to those around him as if he decides something shouldn't exist, it doesn't. I recall at one point in the story he gets into an argument about I think gravity or how the Earth spins and things go out of control all over the planet. How it ends, they basically explain to him who he is and what he's doing, and he starts to make comments that he doesn't think such a thing could exist. And then disappears in mid sentence. Obviously this one chose a happier route, but I can't help but feel that whoever however this story came together, they may have read or been familiar at least in part with that story

Now this is some prime Twilight Zone sci-fi magic here. What a horrifying concept, Beechcroft isn't just sending people away, he's erasing them, eliminating them. He talks about decimating, destroying people; he's not just misanthropic, he sounds sociopathic. It strikes me that Beechcroft has the same powers that Anthony Fremont from "It's a Good Life" has. It's an impressive choice to set this as a comedic tone episode when it could easily live up to the horror of that one. The only difference is that he has the maturity and conscience that Anthony lacks to set the world back. I think I was impressed by the effects a little more than Walter was. I didn't notice the masks until watching this recap. While watching the episode, my eye was following the other moving parts on screen so I never noticed how stiff and phony they looked. The other effects are quite well done. Kudos to Walter for noticing that thing about the music. I didn't make that connection but it's fun to imagine a jazz band rendition of the Ghostbusters theme. I think I'd rate this a little higher than decent: great premise, a strong performance, solid effects, and an unexpected tonal choice make for an episode worth returning to check out.
