Back when I was Framing, I always carried an Enderes 6 in 1 screwdriver with me. They weren't pricey, but you could find them next to the register at every Ace hardware I went in to and it was an outstanding American made tool. Admittedly, you don't need a screwdriver all that often framing a house but every time I left mine in the toolbox to save weight on the tool belt, I'd have to run back to the van and get it at some point. So I learned to always carry a 6 in 1 with me. When I came back to all of this stuff I wanted another Enderes (I am not sure what is going on with the company), so I tried Wiha and Lenox and no name brands but none of the felt right...like they were all over designed. Finally, this past January I tried Wilde Tool and it was exactly what I was looking for. Skilsaw is still around. Their Mag 77 worm drive saw has it's adherents (Hi!) but I think that as cordless becomes the thing it is starting to fade away. God I miss Porter Cable. Yes, I know they are still around but they feel like a shell of what they once were. Porter Cable used to be the tools that really serious finish carpenter's carried, at least in my area. (Festool kind of fills that role these days it seems). Their first magnesium footed circular saw is still the best I have ever used. Yeah, my Makita is great but that old Porter Cable was still better. Their Bayonet saw (worm drive jig saw) put every other jig saw I have ever used to shame. It was super powerful, smooth/didn't vibrate, and was amazingly agile making cuts along scribed odd lines a breeze. My dad who was a carpenter from 18 until he got too sick to work called their model 314 trim saw the best power tool he ever used. Their planers, belt sander, and routers were simply the best. I hate that brands like Porter Cable and Hart have become names devoid of why they were "Names". Names that could be gobbled up by corporate behemoths and downgraded for sales. I have been making YT videos off and on (different account) ...not advertising just saying... and I am planning on making a video about Porter Cable and what a loss they are really to carpenters.

Yeah, I just have memories to go by, but it seemed like Skil, Porter Cable, and Delta were juggernauts. Granted, I also grew up with American made Chicago Pneumatic. Haha, no worries about advertising...I'm not near famous enough to be an ahole about that. Those are also videos I couldn't make since I don't have the first hand experience with the brands in their heyday. Glad you found a good 6-in-1!

If I'm not mistaken the new ones are actually manufactured by Enderes. At least I know the bits are, the slightly coarse finish on the grind of the tips is a giveaway

The new Channellock screwdrivers are badass. Hardened steel shank, magnetic, and their grip is a little different from the Mayhew’s with that softer finish. I also got my hands on a Wright Tool screwdriver and it’s closer to the Mayhew.

Agreed...the craziest thing is the price; that makes it an even better deal. I've ordered a Wright that always gets cancelled...really want to see the blue in person. I've also been watching your recently rehashed tool box tours...I never comment because I'm on my phone and a different account, but good stuff! I can't believe that Nepros switch was seized up! The roll cart never gets old...I'd planned on a Macsimizer for work, but the guy flaked on a small order, so I went a different route.

Those Mayhew drivers are nice.. I like em..got a set at work.. The acetate Channellock 6 in 1 is a keeper

Agreed...quality at a very low price point...you can't go wrong. The previous generation Channellock drivers are probably the best translucent acetate drivers I've ever seen...color goes really well.

Yep...for what it is worth, we have always had people tell us (my family) that we sound "more southern" whatever that means. I deal with customers all over and the southeast sounds distinctly different...never knew exactly what they were thinking, but we still have people tell us that.

I like the Channellock 61A better myself because the tips are better with parallel ground flat blades. I also kind of like the old square acetate handle better as well. I got the new one about a year ago and the handle seems to be very soft, maybe mine was just a bad hande batch but it seems like I can mark it with my thumb nail. I also like how the previous bits say USA on them, though I know Enderes is making the new one and their quality is great. I generaly I prefer 4 sided handles and not trilobe, they just don't work for my hands. I bought a large set of the previous drivers and the 61A ( Yhey were made by Pratt-reed) which I really love. I don't mind and actually do quite like the current 61N, but not enough for me to buy the rest of the drivers. Those demolition drivers are interesting, but I have no need for demo screwdrivers and probably won't buy them. I love 6 in 1 drivers, and really hate the new trend of bit carousels. I don't need a ton of bits and definitely don't want an oversized handle. I believe the 61A was made by WILDE and the 61N is made by ENDERES, well except the handles themselves anyways.

I have a great 6 in 1 by Wilde thats been my go-to. This one looks good too.

Nice, I think the Wilde is pretty common...they are black handled now, but were red in the past. Kind of a constant countertop item along with the telescoping magnets.

Love the comparison, thanks! I have the 61A, and though it's handy and can't argue with the price at the time, I find the play between the black shank and handle a bit unruly. Again, handy tool and was priced well, just wish the tolerances were tighter.

Glad you enjoyed! That is a downside to this style across the board. On that topic, I sort of think the silver shank looks better with the acetate driver.

My 6 in one Kitchen Drawer is a solid item. I think I got it for $6 in the mid 90's, probably NAPA, maybe Quest . I did try replacing it with some ratcheting multi bit thing, but the 6 in one just is better, so it stays. Its a Michigan Industrial Tools, which as many will know, became Tekton.

Of all the screwdrivers you have, what would you consider the best set/ brand? I'm considering the Wiha extra heavy duty, but would really like your opinion.
@lonestarmopars
@lonestarmopars Ай бұрын
Not giving away future videos, I don't think you will be disappointed with the Wiha. I always advocate for buying a test driver before committing to a set (unless you get a killer deal, or have to have it ASAP). You could very possibly find a handle you like better, but the Soft Finish is never going to be far behind; Similarly, the price is very competitive. One option if you need a set is to go for a 5 Piece and then build from there. You just missed Collin's #2 Sampler set on KC Tool of the Day. Zoro can get you a good price, but Wiha also routinely has fairly solid buys via their Pro Picks. With the combo of Memorial Day and Father's Day, you should be able to find a really good deal. I'd have no hesitation suggesting them. As long as you don't go overboard and turn it into some multiyear quest like me, you should be fine.

Did you see the 6 in 1 code blue version? Model 61CB same handle with a striking cap.
@lonestarmopars
@lonestarmopars Ай бұрын
I could be wrong, but I want to say that one is out of the lineup? I have seen it and the striking cap is definitely unique. I actually have that same style of Code Blue driver on a little cart I roll around the shop...I got them as a cheap, beater set and they have held up pretty well. Only real downside is the bonus laser etching on the cap gets marred when you actually use the striking feature. Maybe I can pick one of them up cheap and compare it...

Tekton sells those bits separately.

Nice, thanks for the intel! I've grown so accustomed to different manufacturers deviating ever so slightly just to keep you in their ecosystem, it was quite the pleasant surprise to see the interchange across eras and even cross-platform with Wiha. I think I have a Tekton...not sure where it is though.
