Only solution is for a city to develop a biking(cycling) culture. It has to start with the citizens and govt demanding safe, separate biking lanes everywhere and allow bikes on LRTs and MRTs with the stations and coaches equipped for that. Once, that is done hike taxes on cars by 50% and I believe traffic will go down soon and the quality of life out in the city will go up. I know it's hard to get done since the status quo is in the interest of the oil lobby but this is the only sustainable way forward.

I travel between JB and Sg regularly. The ~300000 daily commuters crossing the 2 Customs checkpoints should be diverted away from JB Town Center to alleviate congestion in JB town. Build bus interchanges like those in Singapore (Woodlands, Toa Payoh, Bedok, Tampines, etc.) at Gelang Petah, Larkin, Kulai and Johor Jaya and link them by express buses to a few sister hubs in Singapore. For the sake of efficient connectivity, stop protecting bus companies by removing all restrictions on buses plying between these hubs. These 4 hubs are then fed by feeder buses from smaller towns from where Malaysians working in Singapore can stay. They do not need to live in relatively expensive JB town and contribute to the city's congestion. The small towns will also benefit economically from rental demand and consumption of daily necessities by these tenants. If the congestion still persist in JB town, then a fee like Singapore's Area Licensing Scheme (ALS) should be implemented for those who want to enjoy traveling into JB town. So only Singaporeans who have to pay tolls and Johoreans working in JB town should be driving on these currently congested roads. I'm sure this diversion of ~300000+ commuters out of JB town will complement the plans in place and those that are now in discussion between the SG and Malaysian governments. As a parting comment, I'm 65 and I hope in my lifetime, I can see the day when we do not need a passport to commute between Sg and Malaysia. With a new King, a new Sultan of Johor and a PM quite unlike Muhiddin, Najib and Mahathir, I'm optimistic they will make it happen for the sake of co-prosperity of the 2 peoples. God bless Malaysia and Singapore!

It's not just the traffic. I stood for 2 hours in the JB immigration clearance, only to find that they had 2 queues sharing 1 counter! They think this will speed things up, but it actually makes things worse because the huge processing time added to each queue from sheer volume far outweighs any individual officer's inefficiency in a 1 queue to 1 counter situation. It's also an insult to the dignity of visitors.

Also, the current bus setup by both SBS and causeway link is pathetic. They act based on a whim and reduce bus loads whenever they like.
