Chao Fact File: Chao Genetics and Inheritance

There have been MANY questions about "what Chao breed is this?" and "I mated these Chao but got this weird result!", so hopefully this video can equip you with the knowledge on how Chao inheritance works, and the understanding of the system used when you breed with different kinds of Chao.

There’s also two ways to describe a Chao’s genotype which I didn't specifically mention their meaning, since I wanted less explaining and more showing in the video.
Homozygous: when both alleles are identical in a trait (e.g. Normal/Normal, Red/Red, Monotone/Monotone, Emerald/Emerald)
Heterozygous: the two alleles are different in a trait (e.g. Monotone/Twotone, Red/Normal, Pink/Lime Green, Shiny/Non-Shiny, Emerald/No Texture)
Chao that do not have any ancestors means their genotype is going to be homozygous. Assume this for any Chao which you did not obtain through breeding.
Chao that you get via breeding, i.e. has parents, usually are heterozygous in their genotype. This makes it important to keep track with who breeds with what Chao, so you can get an idea for which genes may get passed down if you're wanting a specific breed of Chao.
Here it is, another Chao Fact File, probably the single biggest project yet, with even more technical roadblocks and crashing which delayed this LOADS longer than it should have. That being said, I probably won't make something as big as this again, mainly because it will take another year or two to upload something new :P
In all honesty, the equipment I use is severely outdated, so fancy editing + older editing program + low system memory that can't cope with too many fancy things at once = my trusty laptop rolling over and dying and enduring exponentially long loading screens (of about 20 minutes) just to get the timeline displayed when I open the project file.
It got to the point I had the convert 2/3rds of the unfinished video into an AVI and then open a fresh project to do the remaining edits, simply because the memory wasn't there to finish it under normal conditions. So for those with a good eye, you may notice the last 5-7 minutes of this video having better quality than the rest of the video, since that was the part was wasn't re-compressed from an AVI file

Idek if you still check comments anymore but if you do I could use some clarifications: I got pure Lime Green Chao mate with pure blue chao. Baby is Lime green with hidden blue(I'll call them Lime Green 2). But then Lime Green 2 later mated with White (hidden sky blue). This new baby is also lime green (so Lime Green 3). if I'm understanding this correctly, then Lime Green 3's hidden allele could be white OR sky blue??? Edit/P.S. how do you have so much room to do these videos??? I guess if you're playing on the gamecube and lots of memory cards then I too, had countless chao lol. (unfortunately I'm on the ps3 version atm so...gotta control the amount of chao i got >.

Kaida W That's true. Lime Green 3 would have the White or sky blue Colour as a hidden Allele. One colour allele must come from both parents, and the chao can only store 2 colour alleles at once. Lime green colour phenotype comes from Lime green 2, lime green 3 could take either white or blue as the hidden from the white chao. Have fun breeding! :)

Gold and Silver chao are in the Dreamcast SA2 version as well, you obtain them by trading over SA1's chao to SA2 using the memory card system, it sadly doesn't last forever though because if you even leave the Chao Garden in SA2 for a bit, the jewel chao obtain their normal two-tone apperence again, but it still exists...

The fact that you can't buy normal color Chao is why I never get rid of any of mine, even if they have awful ability grades. I sink into raising these Chao's weakest grades, then breed them for more, stronger normal color Chao. Though it really sucks having to start from an E grade, especially if it's the stamina stat.

My grandfather and my oldest sister both raise and breed golden retrievers. There was an instance where one of my grandfathers female golden retrievers went over and bred with a labrador retriever next door. Every single one of the puppies was black as golden retrievers have a black skin/fur gene that is only brought out when bred with a lab. He kept one of the black puppies (half lab/half retriever) and sold the rest. When it was old enough, he bred the black dog to one of his retrievers to get a 75% retriever/ 25% lab litter of puppies, which resulted in about half of the litter being tan and the other half black. He repeated the process one more time for and 87.5% retriever/12.5% lab litter. All of the puppies looked pretty much exactly like golden retrievers at this point, except for the one that had black fur. They looked like retrievers in every way except for color. So my grandfather called them "black golds" and it is one of the most beautiful dogs I've ever seen.

I want to make some good chao, but I also like caring for them as well. I done chao garden lots, but never got much done. I assume toys like rocking horses are from Jewel/ challenge races. Chao Island have a Chao Gallery for all chao colours and types. I believe this should also cover Bright Chao. You can also use Chao Viewer on Chao Island too

Breeding is the inferior version for those platforms. SADX on PC is preferred though as modding can patch those issues to include other better features from past SADX versions

can someone explain twotone dominance a bit more? so can i breed say a red and pink chao does it get highlights from either colour . do i have to start breeding with a normal chao im order to get a twotone chao? if so then what colour will that result in - if i then breed a white normal chao and pet it , will it change colour depending on the colour of the twotone gene colour parent?

Hoppocompus Think of mono and two tones as completely distinct genes. Two different monotones (that have no family history) cannot produce a twotone. You will need a normal twotone to make any twotone, because they carry the allele that enables the offspring to be twotone. Monotone whites will always be white, while twotone whites *can* change colour depending on their type.

Question, is it true that certain kinds of colored eggs only appear on different memory cards on the GC versions? Certain colors that I want aren't appearing in the Black Market, and most forums I find say that different memory cards will have different kinds of egg sets that only that file can buy. Can I really not get all the colors with just one memory card?

Even when you have 180 emblems, finding all egg colours will be near impossible with just one memory card. Using multiple files across different memory cards is a quicker alternative

If you have multiple memory cards, just copy your main SA2B file with the most emblems to each card. Using your other memory cards, start up the game, load your save file, and enter the Chao World. This should make a brand new Chao file for one of your memory cards. Unlock the other 2 gardens as normal, and check the Black market every 5 minutes to see if any new eggs appear. Hope this helps. :)

I need help! I play SA2. Battle for Xbox 360. In my chao garden I'm only able to obtain 5 Chao egg colors from the black market. (Green, Blue, Orange, white and grey) is this a glitch? I have 80 emblems and have yet to see even a black or lime green egg. I even went as far as to delete both my game and Chao saves and do them over 3 times with the same result. Can you explain the Chao egg color sets when you start a Chao garden? (You know set 1 red, sky blue, brown, etc)

Character Chao function much like Chaos Chao, they don't reincarnate, they can't breed, and don't take animal parts (unless you do some hacking modifications).
