I like the different take. Like you said, the game lore can be vague/static at times, so of course, people are going to come up with their own takes/preferences. Edit: That said, I'm surprised at how much the movie-verse pulls from the Fleetway/The UK stuff: 1. Mobius and Earth being separate planets was in the Fleetway comics *before* Sonic X. 2. Sonic being raised by an owl was apparently in the guidebook called Stay Sonic? 3. Robotnik getting his own super form was in both Fleetway and the Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog cartoon. 4. Fleetway also had multiple Metal Sonics aka The Brotherhood of Metallix.

I think the director confirmed that the main reason they kept Gerald alive was because of Jim Carrey playing him, there was just no way they could have a movie with Jim Carrey playing two different characters and those two characters never get to interact even once

I think the reason Maria dies from the explosion when Gerald was closest to the vat is because it was the chaos energy in the vat that killed her. Shadow was presumably born with crazy high levels of it in him and Gerald presumably has been ingesting small amounts of it through Shadow’s quill to stay alive and “youthful,” so that’s why they were unaffected. Maria’s body had never been exposed to chaos energy before and couldn’t take the sudden exposure.

Seriously, they actually managed to keep the truck used for a transformers movie and used it as Eggman's base of operations in Movie 1. Which means Movie Eggman prior to the events on the first film, is funded by the gov't and has yet to fall back on the Robotnik family name or start running casinos to create these death star equivelants and super fortresses.

26:40 I think it’s actually important that movie Sonic goes through with giving into his rage. It’s the setup for a well told story and why Sonic changing Shadow’s mind about revenge actually works. The movie Sonic is still growing and is not his game counterpart, but it’s his growth as a character that people enjoy so much. I don’t enjoy when people complain about that moment, because that just means they missed the story beats that were being told. It’s a wonderful moment that has payoffs in the movie.

We had Fleetway's metallix and even more recently, the Grim in Sonic Prime acting as the mass-produced sonic doppleganger robots as well as multipule versions of the unit as well, even Shard is a metal sonic who gained sentience in archie. Even the movies seem to be capitalizing on this.

I honestly love the direction the movies are going with the lore. A lot of the things that happen in the Sonic games version of "Earth" just cannot happen on ours (to my knowledge we dont have floating islands, giant robotic air bases, and we weren't building space research centers in the 50s/70s!), so the movies feel like they are adapting the Sonic lore to better exist in a real world setting, like how Sonic X did with it's plot. For instance, I love that for Shadow's backstory, since "50 years ago" from movie release was 1975, the lab is in an underground Area 51-esque bunker and Maria had 70s kid fashion (it led to some of the most adorable Shadow and Maria bonding time I could have imagined too!) Like I'm sad it wasn't the ARK but it just wouldnt have been believeable to have a space colony here when we had just gone to the moon 10 years prior! Also sad that Shadow wasn't created to cure Maria (who didnt seem to be sick in the movies), but also this means Maria had no ulterior motive to love Shadow other than just loving him for him, and thats so important to Shadow who I'm sure in his worst moments just felt like people only cared about him for what he could do for them. I also love that we get to see Sonic and Eggman get chartacter backstories and development. I always wondered by characters like Knuckles and Shadow had full lore, but Sonic is just *there* and Eggman is just some fat dude who hates hedgehogs with a burning passion. I like seeing Sonic slowly become the hero he is known to be today! Sonic games' timeline is convoluted to say the least, especially with the last decade of games almost contradicting each other, so its refreshing to have a timeline where certain things like character stories and traits are solidified. I find the movies refreshing, and they make for great conversation and theory when discussing the differences from all the different game lore!

I said before that I find concerns about Movie Sonic being out of character because it's not like Game Sonic to be kind of silly. They're fundamentally different interpretations of the character so there's room for a lot of things you wouldn't usually see from Sonic. Movie Sonic is not like Game Sonic, he has an actual character arc, he’s not always cool and cocky, he shows more immaturity due to his young age, but this works for the context of these movies. I personally didn’t mind Sonic’s rage fit after Tom’s injury. It provided the necessary development that led to him taking over Amy’s role in converting Shadow. I like that the movies give him an actual character arc and flaws, unlike game Sonic who hardly feels like an actual individual sometimes. Still, I agree with you about how he’s got a bit TOO many out-of-character moments sometimes. They really need to tone down his childish jokes, and I think Ben (his voice actor) should work on his cheesy line delivery. Currently, movie Sonic feels like a middle school kid who thinks he’s funny and cool, vs game Sonic who’s ACTUALLY funny and cool lol.

He's not 'out of character' because in fact he's NOT the same character. The Sonic of the movies is not the Sonic of the games, and it's time people understood that. It's not the same universe nor the same characters. They look similar and have similar traits from time to time, but it's a different world with a different background and a different story. I don't see any reason why the Sonic of the movies should be similar to the Sonic of the games, I love them both and understand that they're not the same character, and that's okay.

I've been cool with the changes from the start. Sonic has so many shows, and the games seem to love contradicting each other. The movies seem to be doing a great job constructing this universe with lore from the games. One thing I thought of was how Sonic and Robotnik used the emeralds so differently. I like to think this was actually Eggman's genius holding him back. A basic rule of science is that matter cannot be created or destroyed, only change its form. So while he could see the M.E. as a crystalline cold fusion generator that produces energy that responds to thought, he couldn't believe it could change a fundamental law of the universe. So to make his Deathegg Robo he needed to use present materials. Sonic doesn't know any of this and thinks, "It's magic." So he can use its full potential, but just uses it to create chilli dogs.

I definitely prefer Shadow's lore in the games, especially after the release of Shadow Generations. Gerald's morally gray characterization is much more interesting, and Maria being ill adds so much more depth to her relationship with Shadow. If they do make a Shadow spin-off series/movie, I hope they take a LOT of inspiration from Gerald's journal in SG.

Completely agree with you on this ! Although I love movie Shadow, he's not as deep as a character as Game Shadow is. What made Shadow very interesting in SA2 is that not only he had to deal with grief but also nihilism. His purpose was to save Maria from her illness. And as Dark beginnings and Shadow generations reveled, Maria was her moral support and gave him purpose. And when she died, Shadow was confused and was in search of a purpose. Not surprising that fullfiling Maria's wish was his new purpose considering how important she was to him. And I know that many criticize Shadow 05's story but it was such a very important game for the character development of Shadow because all his life he was told how he was supposed to be. Maria told him to be a beacon of hope for humanity, Black Doom told him to exact revenge on humans, same for Gerald, The Commander Abraham told him that he was a monster. Even Shadow's original purpose for existence was dictated by someone else(Gerald). Shadow decided to have his own agency and resolved his identity crisis. It's a shame that the movie completely overlooked this aspect of Shadow's character (his nihilism and identity crisis). So I hope that a new series or spin-off will tackle those aspects of his character. As for Gerald, the games showed very well his frustration and his descent into madness while Movie Gerald seems like a bad guy all along even before Maria's death when you see him stealing Shadow's quill. And Shadow generations showed how good was Gerald before the Ark disaster. And it's a good contrast to Shadow bcs Gerald didn't have the time to be redeemed as he died very shortly after the Ark disaster.

Tom was Sonic's first friend, and he sees Tom as his own father, and considering Sonic is still a kid in the movies, plus the fact that he had to learn to make good choices as the lesson he's supposed to learn, Sonic crashing out is pretty reasonable. I can see the next movie being based more on Sonic Heroes than Sonic CD, this way it could introduce Neo Metal controlling the Metal Sonic Army, and if Jim Carrey decided to not come back for this one it would still fit with the story of Sonic Heroes, and even if he did the whole story is that Neo Metal Sonic takes over eggman's Empire and tries to use it to lure Sonic and his friends to him so that he can copy their data and use it against them. And with Shadow not being dead after the eclipse Cannon, and Amy being introduced, it really seems like that's the direction that they're going to go in.

The Sonic Movies are overall great in my opinion. And I do honestly like some of the lore differences compared to the video games. Such as the Chaos Emeralds being brought together to form the Master Emerald. Or how Shadow comes to Earth from a meteorite that resembles the Black Comet. Which could hint at the Black Arms in a future movie. And I’m really interested to see what other elements from the games will be adapted in the 4th movie.

While I don't think that it would have been possible for them to have the ARK floating in space during the 70s (Since the movie universe goes a more "grounded" and "realistic" approach), I do however think that it would have been possible to have the ARK as a secret colony on Earth. One that G.U.N. (With Gerald's "help") converted into a superweapon and after Maria's death.

Idk if Chaomix or anyone noticed this but if you look closely there's one Metal Sonic that's resembled Metal Sonic color scheme while the others are mostly grey and it's the same Metal Sonic that almost got Sonic (by shooting him). Which means this Metal Sonic could be the ONE AND ONLY Metal Sonic. As for the grey Metal Sonic, they're could be Metal Sonic clones or his henchmen. One thing I find interesting about Sonic, Shadow, and Knuckles' quills is that they all differ from each other. Sonic is confirmed in the first film to have his own unlimited power. It doesn't come from anywhere, it's just part of him and always has been, and the power is unlimited, infinite, it cannot be lost. Knuckles loses his powers in his show, which proves that his power is not unlimited. None of the other echidnas show any signs of these electrical super strength powers, either, which makes me think that perhaps Knuckles' power hasn't always been his own. With Shadow, when he runs around the Eclipse Cannon, Robotnik asks, "What is that gerbil doing?" To which Gerald responds that he's powering the cannon with Chaos Energy, which gives the impression that his energy is directly linked to the Chaos Emeralds, which explains his ability to use Chaos Control without an Emerald and his ability to use Chaos Spear.

All of their powers are Chaos Energy. It's only mentioned for Shadow in the movies, but the books mention it for Sonic and Knuckles too. The concept of "taking Sonic's power" was also a pretty big deal in the first movie, which implies that he can be drained just like Knuckles was in the show. The show also seems to imply that Knuckles got his powers from defeating Iblis in the musical episode, which would mean he wasn't born with them and explain why the echidnas still wanted Sonic's power when Knuckles was right there.

Robotnik would have to kill Sonic to take his power, I thought that was made clear in the film. But also, Sonic still has his power, and he's able to siphon it from his quill in Robotnik's ship. But also, when Robotnik is running a power analysis on Sonic, it says, "Power Analysis: Unlimited" and the words, "Chaos Energy" are only used once in all 3 films and it refers to Shadow.

So, a potential plot point I just thought of that they may be doing in the fourth movie is that, while yes there are several metals. Each one improves off the failures of the last one, so basically you start with a swarm, and over time there end up less and less metals. With each defeat leading the remaining ones to adapt until theres only one, the metal we'll get to know over the series. It would be a clever way to implement his 'biodata' copying ability, where he is basically, through trial and error, testing out what works and what doesn't with sonic.

There's a Sonic Movie 2 prequel comic which explains how Knuckles got his lackeys at the beginning of the movie, how Agent Stone created Eggman's new base at Mean Bean Café, and tells how Tails found out Sonic was on Earth (by also confirming that other zones from Genesis games are their own planets, like Marble Zone or Spring Yard) GUN is also retconned in Sonic Movie 3, implying they've been existing for at least 50 years as they're the ones working on obtaining chaos energy from Shadow and then caused the explosion that killed Maria with said energy. They probably decided to reveal their existence to the public in Sonic Movie 2 when Sonic appeared in Hawaii. As for Metal Sonic, there's canonically more of these in the games but they're all reproductions that last only 1 game, with the original first appearing in Sonic CD and being stuck in Little Planet until Eggman took him back to Earth years later in Sonic 4 Episode Metal.

In fairness; I don't think GUN actually mistook Sonic for Shadow in Adventure 2. That's more or less a cover story; they want to cover up Project: Shadow after all, so when Shadow is seen in public, GUN claims it's actually a gone-criminal Sonic. GUN's plan (hopeless as it was) was seemingly to capture both hedgehogs, bury Shadow once again, while Sonic has everything Shadow did pinned on him and is put behind bars.

@ Okay buy you must admit; that's kind of a weird reason to conclude GUN genuinely thinks Sonic, who they'd know has not been arrested prior to SA2, is a criminal who must be arrested for escaping the prison they kept Shadow in where Shadow no longer is. Especially since Sonic getting arrested isn't so much as "scene" as it is the entire act 1 of the game. (Also something I once saw pointed out is that, Terios looks a lot like Sonic when standing still and they're both facing you, but Shadow's silhouette does actually look like Sonic's when running, especially when zooming past you while it's night time (Hello Radical Highway) while Terios does not. So while maybe there is a difference in story drafts where Terios could've gotten confused for Sonic by dumb GUN officials; it is actually believable for Shadow to get mistaken for Sonic by the public.
