I think Shadow should be the one character that can use choas control without an emerald. Shadow's body is like a vessel filled with chaos energy, and when he takes off his inhibitor rings he releases the chaos energy thats already within him. It would make sense for Shadow to be able to use chaos control without an emerald because he'd still have chaos energy with him. When he does chaos control with an emerald, he draws chaos energy from the emerald. When he does chaos control without an emerald, he draws chaos energy from within himself.

Exactly what I'm thinking. It's also the main reason Shadow has inhibitor rings. He can't let it all out at once, without risking the huge damage it could cause, So he uses his chaos energy in moderation.

Well... Shadow was literally CREATED thanks to the Chaos Emeralds. 😏 It was obvious to me to think that thanks to this, he could use the power of Chaos Control without any problems, even without the Emeralds. 🤔 And if you need to somehow answer the question: "Why does not he somehow run out of this energy?". That I don't really know... In my opinion, it was always something to do with Shadow having to wear his inhibitor rings (unlike Sonic 👀), and the fact that the Chaos Emeralds themselves somehow have "Nearly Unlimited Power" while still providing the wearer with energy from (almost) nowhere... I like to point out that the Time Travel variant of Chaos Control seems to only be possible when two users with an Emerald each invoke it at the same time. If a single use of Chaos Control is meant to allow the user to stop time or teleport something in the space around them, then a simultaneous use must combine both of those abilities. Double/Dual Chaos Control allows the users to teleport to a point in time. Pretty cool.

If you time travel with Chaos Control, you also can change your location in that time, while Time Stones probably don't do that. Plus, two users need to invoke Chaos Control, while you only need one person with all of the Time Stones to mess with time. Mostly speculation tho.

The way I see it, Shadow was infused with the energy of the Chaos Emeralds during his creation, allowing him to use other Chaos abilities without the Emeralds like Chaos Spear, and Chaos Blast. So it would make sense that he can also use Chaos Control without the Emeralds, but it would be far more limited in its effects. However, if he removes his inhibitor rings, then the affects of all his Chaos abilities are enhanced for a while, but he ends up extremely exhausted and must rest for a period of time.

He could do that in Sonic 06 and Shadow the hedgehog. Shadow has always been able to teleport short distances without the emerald ever since his inception. The only times he needed and an emerald was for the variation that alters time flow among the other chaos control abilities. I mean every move the guys uses starts with chaos chaos spear, Chaos Snap [teleport], Chaos blast, Chaos boost. He was literally made to have an affinity for Chaos energy so that he could sense the prescence of the emeralds to collect them for Black Doom [or to defeat him]. I'm willing to bet he only used the emerald to warp in SA2 was to show Sonic how much more capable he was being able to find uses for one emerald when up to that point Sonic needed all 7 for them to be useful.

Another confirmation that chaos control draws from the user is the retroactive implementation of Sonic X’s inhibitor ring aspect of Shadow’s power. One of the Twitter takeovers confirmed how Shadow was doomed and Sonic tried to save him. Being Super alone wasn’t enough for Shadow to pull off the final stretch so he had to tap deeper into the reserves of his power to the point of almost dying.

8:47 - Chaos Boost is not technically unique or even original move to 06. It first appeared in Shadow the Hedgehog. After you defeat enough of "good" enemies, your "evil gauge" fills up, and you also get this red aura around yourself. It was even stronger than in 06, because it provided complete immunity to all attacks, not just bullets. And just like in 06, he couldn't use Chaos Blast without Chaos Boosting himself first.

I agree with your theory that chaos emerald isn’t necessarily required for basic uses of chaos control. Even all the way back in sonic adventure 2, there is evidence to support that. In the final battle of the hero campaign shadow still uses chaos control against sonic, despite the fact, none of the chaos emeralds are there apart from the fake one sonic possesses. So it is clear shadow does not possess the chaos emerald at that point, but it’s still able to warp a small distance. I’ve always looked at it as shadow has some chaos, energy, naturally flowing through him, as seen, whenever he removes his inhibitor rings, so that’s my justification for white shadow can do this, but characters like sonic or silver, need an emerald. And of course, with each Emerald, the power increases. Hence, why whenever we see shadow warping without an emerald it’s only a short distance.

I think there might be some semantics in the techniques phrasing. Chaos Control could theoretically be using chaos to control space and time, instead of Controlling Chaos. While what Knuckles does, I could see being the opposite. Rather than using the power of chaos to control something, he's controlling the power of chaos.

i have a feeling that only a few characters can use the chaos control without an emerald. Shadow: as he said in sonic battle he can get the energy from his heart Silver:the whole timewarp thing, Silver constantly jumps to present and future even when he hasnt got one, even if they are in use. I think the chaos emeralds seem to be the source of unlimited power like the sun. Firebenders need the sun's energy to first of all perform firebending let alone retain their own body heat, much in the same way you likely need the emerald to retain your energy after pulling off chaos control. You could probably firebend or chaos control without the sun or emerald but the consequences of doing so isn't worth it unless one feels it's absolutely necessary.

I want to tell you about Maekawa's original idea before the retcon in Shadow the Hedgehog. In Sonic Adventure 2, Rouge says that there was no Shadow on the Arc, only the Biolizard. Also in the game, Shadow says that his memories of Maria may be wrong. In one of the cutscenes, Gerald said that he made Shadow based on past developments, but...he made a hedgehog based on a giant lizard? This is silly. In the Sonic Adventure 2 Perfect Guide released in Japan, there is a Rouge report stating that the capsule was lost after the incident. But how? all this time the capsule was on Prison Island. Because Shadow was not on the arc, he was created by Gerald on the prison island in which he planted fake memories. It also explains why he looks like that. Gerald put all his revenge and malice into the design of Shadow. In Sonic Heroes, which was also written by Maekawa, Eggman (or metal sonic) in Casino Park tells Shadow "You have no past to remember". Given all these facts, Shadow was created on a prison island, but what is the missing pod in rouge's report? This is Sonic the Hedgehog. Shadow is his cheap copy. While Sonic is running normally and surviving at the end of the game, Shadow needs boots and dies. This also explains why Shadow looks so much like Sonic in the concept art. Last but not least, in the final battle, Shadow tells Sonic "Sonic, I think I've discovered what the Ultimate Life Form is, it might be you!". But this was changed in his solo game which was written by Takashi Iizuka. I think this is an interesting material for the video.

You can tell that the Adventure Era games and early dark era Sonic games were trying really hard to show progression in abilities. In Sonic 3K all playable characters had a super form and Sonic even had a Hyper version. SA2, being the "last" true Sonic game, demonstrates so much character progression, in both abilities and arcs.

Shadow can definitely use Chaos Control without an Emerald. He's done it in practically every game he's appeared in. SA2, he uses it when Eggman first releases him, and in his final battke against Sonic. Heck, the BIOLIZARD uses Chaos Control after the Chaos Emeralds were powered down by Knuckles via the Master Emerald. In Shadow the Hedgehog, Black Doom constantly uses Chaos Control to warp Shadow to other levels without a Chaos Emerald. Then there's the example you discussed, where in the final level where Shadow has to use it to progress through the Black Comet when Black Doom is in possession of all 7 Emeralds. In Sonic 06, Shadow uses it to teleport into Dr. Eggman's base with no Emeralds. Chaos Snap is also him literally warping short distances to deliver quick strikes to his opponents, and he can use it before he ever gets an Emerald in the story. In Sonic Forces, he uses Chaos Snap against Infinite, then uses Chaos Control against one of his Phantom copies. He's proven over and over again that he doesn't need an Emerald to, at the very least, warp short distances.

There's no reason to believe those powers are Chaos energy. Rather, they're abilities temporarily granted to Sonic due to him absorbing energy from Cyberspace (hence Cyloop being called CYloop).

Actually, I think we might've had Sonic doing Emeraldless Chaos Control much sooner, all the way back in Sonic Rush. Now, file names aren't necessarily canon, but in Unleashed, the boost aura is internally referred to as Chaos Energy, and when Shadow uses boost during his rival fight, he shouts "Chaos Control!" It could be that boost is using Chaos Control to increase gravity ahead of you, while creating negative gravity behind you; an alcubierre warp drive. If so, then theoretically speaking, there's no limit to how fast Sonic can go.

2:24 I feel like a detail that tends to be overlooked about this specific feat is also the inclusion of a Chaos Drive in the container that Sonic's trapped in, which I'd think probably is a big contributor to how the Fake Emerald was even able to work like that. Considering they're Professor Gerald's creations, I think they're intended to be crystals grown in a lab and infused with some of the actual Chaos Emerald's energy, and that Gerald only ever got his hands on the 4 colors we've seen in SA 2, meanwhile the only ones we see after the fact during '06 seem to be based off the Cyan Chaos Emerald, making me think they're some kinda copy of the technology that Eggman was starting to implement into his own robots until the timeline got shifted after '06, though even then we could maybe consider the energy Eggman's units in Unleashed use are also some kinda Chaos Drives.

The idea that the Rings are (in some fashion) able to act as a fuel source for the various moves pulled off by Sonic and his friends only further validates my hypothesis that the Rings themselves are actually just another form of Chaos energy that has coalesced and solidified into a ring shape. A cool replacement for sonic's use of chaos control (if they dont want hin to keep using it for some reason) would be Time Break and Speed Break from secret rings. They feel like less powerfull versions of both capabilities of chaos control. Time Break doesn't stop time, just slows it down, and speed break is not a teleport, just a inmediat speed boost. The only problem would be "how did sonic got those abilities back" but since cyber space draws from the memories of the people trapped in it probably sonic could be "re-enchanced" to use them without requiring the ring and the soul gage

what i think happens is that everybody has some innate chaos energy like ki in dragon ball shadow just happens to have a natural affinity to his chaos energy i think that's what fuels silvers Psychokinesis sonic's super speed and shadow's miriade of abilities

One hilarious thing that should be mentioned is that somehow a Chaos Control like ability has been seen way before Sonic Adventure 2 and that is in Sonic the Fighters. The characters in that game are in possession of a Chaos Emerald which is used to enter that game’s hyper mode which gives the characters exclusive moves. One of these moves is Bean the Dynamite’s “Bean Warp” which is a teleport move only accessible by going into hyper mode. Which hysterically makes Bean the first Chaos Control user in the Sonic series.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I'm sure Shadow was made using the chaos emeralds, giving him some of their energy and the ability to use chaos control on a smaller scale. But the energy is too much for his body to handle, which is why he wears the inhibitor rings.

There's actually one small, very missable detail example about Chaos Control warping Time in SA2!! At the very end, when Super Sonic and Super Shadow are preparing to fire off the technique, you can see the ARK very rapidly deteriorating and losing/burning up many parts as it enters the atmosphere. However, after it's been re-set to its proper Lagrange Point in space, you can see that it's actually been completely restored as well! It's very clear that it's completely intact during the part where the credits are rolling and you see the ARK scrolling behind Earth as Live & Learn plays (still so awesome, by the way). Now, we don't know whether Time was basically reversed for the ARK from the time of CC happening to before the Biolizard took over (like spamming Undo on a project file), or if it was literally restored to a previous, complete version after being warped (like taking an old version of a file in an old folder and moving it into a new folder)(or maybe Chaos Control just took all the broken parts and put them back together? lol), OR if this is just an oversight from Sonic Team and/or they didn't want to make a new 3D model of the properly destroyed Space Colony ARK (that seems like a stretch, though), it is nonetheless a real example of Chaos Control warping/changing the Time in Space-Time! Now, let me actually answer your question... For all the reasons stated in the video; yes, you can Chaos Control without having a Chaos Emerald! There's also a few extra reasons that I personally believe as well as ones posted in the comments - Once you've used it once with an Emerald, you've basically unlocked the ability to use it naturally. Because if you're already a Chaos User, Chaos Energy is already flowing through you, and all it would take is to retrace the steps it takes to do Chaos Control, but now at the expense of your own/Ring energy. There's also the fact that the Biolizard was given a "Chaos Control organ", which means Shadow (and probably Sonic, too) likely has one as well, as well as any other organic creatures who would have the ability to do it. I kinda don't like that it basically goes down to "good genetics" or being created with it in mind, but that's just how it tends to play out in this series lol...

Spoilers for "The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog" below I think that the power to invoke Chaos Control without an emerald may have been the case at one point in time but has since been retconned. During "The Murder of Sonic the Hedgehog" you discover a *bomb* at one point. The player has the ability to suggest that someone "use chaos control to teleport [the bomb] away." At which point one of your party members explicitly states that "We'd need a chaos emerald to do that."

To be fair, most of the characters who chaos control without an emerald are implied to already have some kind of chaos energy in them, and none of those characters are there at that moment (unless the TMoStH protag is secretly the most powerful being in the entire sonic franchise).

I was actually thinking the same thing for some time now as well. Personally I thought that Shadow could use Chaos Control without Emeralds, but only the weaker version, supplying the power to use his attacks and short distance teleportation, but not much more

I loved the video 👍, I believe that there are certain Sonic characters that can use chaos energy and chaos control without the emeralds like sonic and shadow, for example I think sonic uses his chaos energy in his body to manipulate his speed and that's how he's able to perform the boost or like shadow throwing chaos spears around without a emerald in his possession 🤔

It would be so cool to have Chaos Control in gameplay, just one emerald basically gives you an insane amount of power. It would be cool to do things like stop time or blast things away or make things smash together by warping space, on that BoTW type of crazy shit. They couldn’t do it before because it would be too busted, but now, with more open world gameplay they could pull it off easy.

a recent IDW Sonic issue implies that Sonic is still able to use Chaos Control. the same comic also explains that the user of Chaos Control does not need to be in direct possession of a chaos emerald if there is enough radiant chaos energy in the area.

I think of it this way: Shadow's body has been exposed to the energy SO MUCH that it is now inside of him, giving him the ability the use Chaos Control without it. This isn't even the first time we have seen it. Perfect Chaos drained all the energy from the emeralds to the fact that it did not need to consume it to become more powerful, therefore spitting the powerless emeralds out. That could explain why Shadow did not need the Chaos emeralds after Emerl took them. Because he has already drained a lot of the energy to the fact that he did not need it for a short amount of time. This could also be why Sonic's eyes are Green. In 3&k, Super Sonic's eyes become green from the energy of the Chaos Emeralds, but after a while, Sonic's eyes eventually became permanently green due to the exposure to the Emeralds' power.

10:29 The issue with using Battle is that it has a lot of inconsistencies with mostly how it writes some of it’s characters like Shadow. So it’s hard to really use this as evidence, but more so supporting evidence. (Edit: I know that Battle is cannon since G-merl is in the IDW comics, but Ian says that when it comes to Battle, we should at least treat the major events of Battle as cannon)

At least Sonic X provided their own explanation, but the games can’t just assume everyone watched it. And then what’s the difference between taking off one, or two, or all four

I say yes it is possible with Rings. In the Comics it's stated that Rings themselves hold a finite amount of Energy that can be harnessed similar to Chaos Emeralds. The Super Form even uses Rings as a timer after initial transformation further proving this.

I love how chaos control is antithetical to the way Sonic operates. His whole thing is going fast (gotta go fast!) purely via his own effort and ability. Chaos control on the other hand allows you to *instantly* move to another location, and it requires one to have a chaos emerald in their possession in order to use its power. It's both a counter to his speed (as evidenced by his first interaction with Shadow) and also works well narratively as a counter to him as a person (or, uh, hedgehog, as the case may be). I'm actually a bit sad that they didn't make more use of this in his banter with Shadow in SA2. Imagine the meeting in the jungle, except when Shadow is saying all the "you're not even good enough to be my fake" stuff, Sonic could retort by ridiculing him for needing to use chaos control to keep up with him. It'd also give a great in-universe explanation for why Shadow doesn't use chaos control in that fight, as Sonic has cleverly baited him into trying to prove he can keep up with him without using it, relying on Shadow's ego and obsession with proving he's the ultimate life form. (Of course, I'm not saying Sonic is completely against using the power of the emeralds, just that he uses them as a sort of last resort, and is still confident in his abilities such that he's able to accomplish the vast majority of what he does without them.)

I feel like Chaos Control is possibly with Chaos energy in general and not just with specifically a Chaos Emerald. Shadow as an example can due to in which how he was created via Black Arms and Gerald. Black Doom displays Chaos Abilities even without an emerald in hand. He just has inate Chaos. The Chaos Emerald just make whatever ability a caster has more effective and efficient. Sonic can perform Chaos Control but only ever shown just copying Shadow ironically. Chaos Conrol should be a general application of Chaos that different characters with this talent display different moves. Shadow is very consistently Space-Time oriented (Sonic Battle as an example). Sonic should be Speed or Wind based. Super Forms are a whole other deal but thats all i gotta say.
