When I was young, we would race from the lake side of the Dragon to the old motel at the other end. There was rarely any traffic on the road back then, so it was like having a personal racing course most of the time. However, times have changed, and the area is too commercialized and too heavily trafficked. There are many better rides which are far more enjoyable, such as the Cherohala Skyway and then on to Cherokee, NC or taking Hwy 68 South from Madisonville, TN to McCaysville, GA.

When I lived in that area for almost 30 years, I never knew the road was referred to by some as the Tail of the Dragon. All the locals just called it Deals Gap Road. It's a pretty good ride, but can get monotonous. There's a lot of roads up in the mountains that are much more fun.

Much respect for you stopping and knowing the rider might not realizing he's injured (yet). I never have understood the desire to travel to a twisty, over crowded therefore dangerous public road to try and prove that you are not Valentino Rossi. Two words of advice "Track Day".
@GaryL3803
@GaryL3803 11 ай бұрын
Correct! I have driven my car on the Dragon 5-6 days, usually 6-8 back-and-forth runs each day. This is a place to enjoy a nice quick drive at 80-90% of your ability. Save that other 10-20% for the track where the injury potential, to you and your vehicle, is much, much less. I drive my home track, theFIRM, many times annually and end up off of the pavement every 2-3 times somewhere. I have never bent anything on the track. You are guaranteed to bend some if you go off the pavement on the Dragon. The Dragon is quite unforgiving, oncoming traffic (occasionally over the yellow), rocky ditch on one side and trees on the other. Great place to have fun, so share the fun by being safe, courteous and use the pull-overs. May I suggest that when you approach a slower vehicle stay to the right if you are going to follow or on the left to request a pull-over. That red Corvette should have pulled over much sooner.

I've been riding Deal's Gap for over 20 years. What the guy did was "cross the paint", or expect grip from a painted line on the asphalt. Those lines are as slick as ice in any weather. In the years right after the turn of the millennium every time I rode there was a rider down or a fatality. I mainly rode on the weekends. Crashes are so commonplace that I'm quite amazed that they haven't simply closed 129 down...it's a dangerous road. Fun...but dangerous. It really puts a strain on the local first responders.

I’m glad that the rider is okay and that the other rider checked on him. His protective leathers kept him from getting some serious road rash. Also, he is very lucky that he didn’t hit the road sign while landing in some soft soil. All it takes is a few gravels on the roadway, or for the rear tire, and suspension to get loose. The rider didn’t have a good approach into that particular curve either. I’ve had too many friends get hurt or killed on motorcycles. That’s probably one reason why I don’t ride anymore. Also, motorists are a lot more careless now-a-days which puts all motorcycle riders in jeopardy. I really do miss riding though.

I don’t know why people who spent good money on motorcycles want to go fast on this curvy road. Don’t they know it has lots of turns? In both directions! They must have read, or at least heard that this road may be challenging to novice and expert riders alike. Off camber, decreasing radiuses, frost heaves, no shoulders, much of it canopied, varying speeds by other motorcycles and cars, professional photographers stationed along the route, weather conditions in a constant state of flux, locals vs tourists, parade pirates going slow, crotch rockets going fast, varying degree of police presence, souvenir shops at the start, photo op places at the start., over 300 turns to try and memorize. Can’t we all agree to keep it in first gear and just go the speed limit? I’m finding it really hard to convince fast riders to go slow. Actually, I guess it would be like trying to get slow riders to go fast. Yeah. Oh well.

The gravity cavity can catch out the best of them. People come from all over to ride The Dragon because in 11 miles, there's no driveways or parking lots. Just one little gravel road that comes out of The Great Smokey Mountains Park. But it's like running the TT course at the IOM...it takes many passes on it to get good. It's best to just drive through at 80% or less and just enjoy the beauty of the road and the mountains.

I've seen this a lot on the Dragon...novice riders thinking that watching "Biker Boyz" makes them International Sportbike Track superstars. That rider takes no accountability for anyone other than themselves. He's lucky...and stupid. Had there been a rider coming in the opposite direction, he'd have taken them out, too. The Dragon has lost it's edge because of careless riders who don't belong there. Enjoy the Dragon but ride within your abilities. It might not be just you who gets hurt.

I don’t live too far from the dragon and have ridden it at least 30 times When I started watching this video, I could immediately tell that whoever was in that lead bike was going to run into some serious issues at some point in time. I just wasn’t sure what it was going to be whether it was gonna be an oncoming car or running out of lane…While trying to hug that line remember when you’re running the dragon it’s not a closed track. Give yourself some safety margins and you can run fast but have really good lines if you do.
