Why My 3rd Yamaha MT09 Is My Favourite

It's taken 3 different Yamaha MT09s to find one that I like and to appreciate naked bikes but I think this is the best motorbike I've ever owned!

Since you choose MT09 for the 3rd time, you seem to be indeed keen on this model, why not get yourself a higher performance SP version with superior Ohlins cartridge in a golden tube and rear full adjustable Ohlins shock, plus a very handy cruise control function.

I bought the exact same MT09 just a few months ago. The second gen is so much nicer, with TCS if we are on edge and you don't want to die. The headlight looks angry making it the best so far. The blue color is just awesome in the sun, making it the eye catcher for the ladies. I love it so far, this summer going for a holiday in germany, gonna open the throttle on the autobahn!

I recently moved from a 2008 Kawasaki KLR (you loved that bike :)) to a 2019 Yamaha Tracer 900. Holy crap! You are spot on regarding the torque, desire to rip my arms off and all things fantastic about that triple! I am so in love with more than quadrupling my horsepower! I bought a brand new Triumph Tiger Sprot 660 in june. I was originally curious about the Trident 660, but heard about the Tiger Sport. After trying it, I fell in love with it I've tried sport bikes and other brands, but love my Tiger more and more the more I ride it.

Great video because of the thought process you put into it 👍 The make\models don't really matter but I went from a Ducati Multistrada 1200 DVT to a Versys 650, no crashes involved just a change of country. What a smile on my face with the little Kawi, I can ride it full throttle, fell like 'I know how to ride it', it puts a smile on my face every ride... The Multistrada was a brilliant bike but I could never do it justice (not good enough), so like your 3rd MT09, I have found a happy place 😎😉 Just wondering if an MT09 might be the next Versys for me LOL!

The biggest grower I've owned (stop laughing at the back) was my 2009 Kawi Versys 650. I got the bike after a series of short-lived bike changes, and it felt like an anti-climax. The two bikes before it were big, loud, shouty cruisers with wide pipes and lots of character. Next to them, the Versys was extremely bland. However, before them I had a V-Strom 650, and that was an incredible bike. The Versys was faster and more agile, sure, but it was also way less comfortable and the parallel twin lacked character compared to the V-twin in the Strom, so it even felt like a downgrade from that too. However, I swapped the massive riot-shield windscreen it came with for a nice little short, tinted number, which somehow made the bike feel so much more agile and nimble purely by placebo. Then I put an aftermarket can on it. And boom, literally overnight it was a fun bike to ride, with character and enjoyable shifting. It was always competent at what it did, but now it was enjoyable too. And then a couple of weeks later I got hit by a car and the Versys was shrapnel all over the road, and me along with it. Typical.

@@ag096 Hey man, thank you, I appreciate that. I did indeed get another bike, I've got a Triumph T100 Bonneville now which I (very occasionally) made videos on over on my channel. And with your Vstrom, I'd personally keep it over a Versys yeah. The Versys does handle better, and is probably faster, but the Strom is the nicer bike in my opinion. And it's even great on fuel, I had a camping trip here in the UK, put fuel in it in Wales and road all the way back to the West Midlands in England, fully laden with panniers, tent on the seat etc, then drove to work the next morning, and then finally filled up on the way home that night. Can't go wrong with that.

I almost bought this bike. A 2020 model. Even went to the dealer, sat on it, did my homework. Then covid hit and I had to put off buying a bike for awhile. When I did buy a bike last year, I ended up getting a Honda CB500X. I was worried about the power and what not, but I wanted a comfortable bike that I could ride for hours. Ended up being the best bike I've owned!!! Never thought a sub 500cc motorcycle could be so much fun, and I've done several weekend trips with it. That being said, I do think a 650 or 700cc version would be the perfect bike for me.

I will be totally honest with you, I went through all the "growing up stages" of riding, going from off road bikes as a young child, to having 50cc's at 16, 125cc at 17 (UK) and getting my first big bike being a 08 Kawasaki ER6N (still love that bike to this day and would definitely get another when you consider a cheap bike that is amazing for city riding and racking up a couple miles on the motorway, but the 1 big downfall is pins and needles on long rides so they do need a handlebar change over) and I found my way to a MT09, besotted by it's looks, the way it sounds, and the boxes it ticks under my preference of what I want out of a bike to inevitably being a bike I love, and being a bike I hate! The throttle is by large a awfully horrible thing to live with, its absolutely and totally just crap! trying to do two up with that throttle is a hard task and puts it in the category of worst bike for pillions. Then we have its clutch, ohhhh the joys of having a clutch that makes more noise than the exhaust, feels like its going to explode every damn time you turn it on (new rubber replacement on the clutch basket is the fix) but it happens, and keeps happening so you end up having to live with it or constantly change the rubbers over just to escape that horrible clunk and rattle. Then we have the 90+ wobbles, the ones where it makes you question yourself why you even ride the damn thing, not to mention how death defying they are over 100mph, there is no comfort, smooth sailing riding, it is a bike that can't handle those speeds. Sure you can do it, and being a good rider makes all the difference, but it still doesn't change the fact the bike is a total pile of crap post motorway speeds. So with a bad throttle, a awful clutch design, a bike that is useless for pillions, and unsafe post motorway speeds, what's actually left on it that makes it worth keeping? Because lets face it, the truth is this, it is an amazing engine chucked into a really cheap frame, literally exactly what it is! So here is the good parts about it..... the engine, list over lol not a joke, actually the truth, but I have to make the list a bit longer, so here goes.... the upright position, it is good for long distance riding as it isn't a burden on your arms and wrists, it has a great 0-60 time, it is so badly put together it is fun providing danger is your name, it comes up in 1st, 2nd, and 3rd, gear. And finally it sounds ridiculously nice, oh and looks nice. Oh and the fuel bill on them is good too, I travel an hour each way daily on the motorway for 98% of the journey and it costs me around £12 for 2 hours solid motorway riding, it can go up and down depending on how gentle or how heavy you are on the speedo so the ball park figure is £11-15. So in a nutshell, if you want a bike that is lightweight, easy to throw around, and want something that screams danger, you would enjoy the MT09. If you want a bike that is smooth, predictable, good on corners and good at holding speeds you really do need to look elsewhere. If you are after a wheelie machine, and by wheelie machine I mean proper wheelies where you hit balance point, steer clear of the MT09 and go directly to the MT07 (which is the superior bike of the entire range by far, should of got that myself and I am kicking myself daily for it) If you are Mr Grandad wheelie who just enjoys getting the wheel up then the MT09 will put a smile on your face as the snatchy throttle and balance point being so far back on the MT09 makes it an awful wheelie machine, despite many saying it's great for wheelies... here is the proof go check the stunt riders and see which MT they are using! So to wrap up my essay, MT09 good bike? NO! it's absolutely horrible with so many reasons why, but I still love it and will continue to love it even though I hate it... I know I make a lot of sense! Get one and you will sound just as stupid as I do ;) again I should of got the MT07, really should of! But I fell into the stupid trap of I want something bigger.

My XR650L was one that I've had a love/hate relationship with. Then when it was time for me to move with my family, I was going to sell it. But when I road it around, to take it to the self serve carwash, I couldn't stomach it. I was thinking about the prospect of it being my last ride, as I listened to my exhaust crackle in the downshifts, I that was it. Not gonna happen.

I was a bit late to the motorcycle world, ie: 32 years old. That's because I needed a place to live, and buying a bike would have ended that. At least that's what my mum told me! I have had only five bikes since then though. I love MotoGP and Superbike racing so I have an affinity for Sportbikes. I currently own two. Both bought new. A 2001 Kawasaki Ninja ZX-6R and a 2010 BMW K1300S, and I love them both. However, at 64 years young, I am starting to think that I might want something a little more relaxed. I rode a Duke 390 2015 for 5 years. And also own a husky fe plated dirt bike. Found my self riding more freeways so went to a mt07 2021 a couple of years ago. I am an old lady and Prefer upright bikes, handles so well on freeways. Maybe one day I will be ready for Mt09.

I learned to ride on a Suzuki GS1000S (with clip-ons!) when I was 18 ... and survived. I kept it for the better part of 15 years and then got a Honda XL500 which I used to go on a trip ; overland from Belgium to South Africa (1 year trip, 30.000km) These are the bikes I remember best. I now ride a BMW R1200R. It's good and reliable.... It's also boring. 🙂

I have the same with the Street Triple, I'm on my 3th one now with a few bikes in between every other year. I even had an MT-09 but I hated the seating position and suspension (although I fixed that with a hyperpro street box). I miss the powerful engine of the MT09 but the Street is so much faster and more stable around corners.

My headspace on my first (new) bike was my cbr500r and almost immediately i wanted more powah! But i got used to it and learned to corner on it (for 1.5yrs). Strangely i bought a Versys 650 next which only had like 15-20ish more horsepower but that seems to be enough to soothe my power thirst (l o l - i guess im not really that thirsty). Oddly though i wish it handled more like a sportbike…. It took some time to realize that bikes can be cornered in a variety of ways and deep leans is not the be all end all. Also my back doesn’t hurt, im comfortable to ride all day aaand BAGS! BAGS FOR DAYS! My headspace changed to match the logic that my brain knew the Versys offered….i just had to give it time 😊

Third gen 09's seem to be having quite a few teething issues after the engine overhaul. Fueling issues causing the bike to cut off white riding and bad vibration issues are the two big ones I see mentioned the most. And the new chassis' seem delicate. Saw where one guy ran off the pavement, didn't ram in to anything and the headstock snapped off the frame. It's not looking great for the third gens just now.

My 2022 MT09 has grown on me. At first I didn't like it and wanted an GSX-S 1000 or MT10 but couldn't afford it new. A good in used condition was hard to find and so I bougth the MT09 and start looking around for a good MT10. But after riding it for a few months I've stopped looking for an MT10 because the MT09 has grown on me and it has showed me why she's a keeper. It's in yamaha blue obviously😁

The RN69 chassis is a gem. They completely transformed the bike from basically a great engine in an afterthought of a bike to a fantastic hypernaked allrounder. Only problem is the looks.

But after a while it has grown on me and the headlight doesn't bother me anymore and I love the way it preforms. Makes me smile every time I ride it.

My dad has the same issue with GS’S, he had a cast wheeled one but sold it for a K1200S, got a second one which was spoked wheels and had to sell it, then got a 2017 GS and sold it in 2020 cause it got too heavy for Him, and he still wants another one 😅

With the knowledge that in south Africa you drive on the left hand side of the road it makes me wonder. As a motorcycle rider how do you (or do you) use the motorcyclists greeting when riding? In the United States the greeting is your left hand extended outward with your index and middle fingers only extended. This greeting is basically saying be safe. In south Africa you'd have to use your right hand for another motorcyclist to see it.

I think it is better bike all round as for one thing the Z900 has an 17 litre tank compared to the 14 litre tank on the MT 09. The Z900 is superior for touring.

Will you try and run a lower profile bar on this MT? if so witch one? I've tried the Pro Taper Universal low and the Carmichael bend. But I'm not sure what to think of either of them. I think I like the stock bar better, I just with it was 800mm like the Pro Tapers.

2021+ is where it's at according to strangers on the internet. I was trying to decide between Rs660 or mt07 and mt09 new gen i bought the Aprilia and still wonder if the Mt09 sp is a better bike. Rs660 is awesome on the twisty roads but wonder if the torque is more fun...

comparison is the death of contentment, if you get the chance to ride one than take it, but a bike that you have is that much better when you decide to appreciate it!

nice vid. have you tried GSX S750/1000. i have owned the thou for almost 3 yrs now. awesome bike. am also into high torque bike engine. am also looking forward to riding a z800 or MT09. owned an SRX400/600 many moons ago so the MT09 is a most ride for me. 1luv
