I did a 600km ride through the alpes yesterday on my Duke 390 and it made me fall in love with it all over again. I pushed it through mountain pass after mountain pass, through the clouds and chased a GT3RS through a completely empty Sustenpass. It was awesome. Anyone who says a small bike is not enough just hasn’t pushed it hard yet. The real fun start when you press the brakes, not the accelerator. If only my ass wouldn’t hurt so much after 11 hours on that thin seat.

For an AVERAGE rider MT-07 is amazing choice. Its fun, torquey, agile, cheap, holds value and is bulletproof reliable.. also it LOVES wheelies! but of course, if you are getting serious with motorcycles you will get to the point when it is just not enough and you need to upgrade.. and that's totally okay.. I have my MT-07 for almost 2 years /20 000km now. Needed only oil changes and new set of tires since i bought it brand new. I am super happy with it, even went for a couple of track days with it. Boss: Cheap enough to retain 2 cylinders, all else you can trow out the window and use the cheapest materials and parts we can get away with. Engineers: Are you sure this is going to sell well ? The advantages offered by upside down forks are not applicable during street riding. You are experiencing the placebo effect, if you think a traditional fork is not sufficiently stiff for a couple rides around town or on the highway. You need to be really pushing the envelope on the track for the difference to even become noticeable. For a street rider, a traditional fork is better because if the seals fail you don't lose all the oil, and they are easier to service since you can drain and refill them without taking them out of the bike. The reason most bikes come with USD forks today is because of the larp factor, the same reason they are coming out with winglets on street bikes too (They don't do anything except look cool)

Just to chime in on the injury thing... I do Enduro MTB'ing, in January I had a heavy crash and smashed up ribs on my left side... I also contemplated whether I should give up on it, as it was 5 weeks of recovery, etc... I decided against it, did a few more Enduro events and rode a fair bit of gnarly trails in Cape Town... and then 4 weeks ago... I had another wild crash, fractured 2 ribs, tore my shoulder rotator cuff, and smashed up my thigh... needless to say, I'm now giving up on the Enduro MTB thing, as I'm sitting with 12+ weeks of recovery in 6 months, and getting hurt like this sux. So don't let anyone else tell you you did the wrong thing for quitting MX... your life and your body, do what suites your lifestyle and it's easy for people who haven't gone through the motions to comment on things like this, but at the end of the day you are the one that has to go through the entire healing process and inconvenience of being injured, being unable to function in day-to-day life. Peace!

Calling a +70hp with insane torque a "beginer bike" is what causes 18 year olds to buy 180hp suicide machines to prove themselves. The MT-07 also felt a bit "cheap" in some senses to me, compared to my SV650. It felt like "too light and floaty" to have a good feel in corners. But 70hp is more than enough to get in serious trouble. And that CP2 engine alone almost got me to buy a T7. TLDR: i mosltly agree. But pls stop calling sub 4second 0-100kph bikes slow.

@@silver_surfer88 Dunno about anyone else but most of the people who ride MTs where i live (paris) are complete bell ends. It is THE go to bike for needless rev bombs, free exhausts, needless out of control wheelies and traffic light GP racers. IMO: Mt07s as begginner bikes teach riders all the wrong things. Instead of a well thought out chassis/suspension/brake setup which teaches riders to progressively increase their speed and ability whilst staying in the bikes comfort zone, Yamaha dumped a powerful, fun torquey engine into a bike with trash suspension, grabby brakes and a flexible frame which WILL lead to the bike being unstable when the rider inevitably wants to go faster. But hey, you can rev bomb obnoxiously and wheelie easily so i guess its fine for a beginner rider.

As someone that bought that same gen MT07 for commuting, I can agree it is built to a price. The forks and brakes are particularly not sporty. It was designed to compete with the older SV650 and Ninja 650 bikes not bikes like the Street Triple or R6 for example. As with all the other comments here, I agree a Street Triple sounds like the right bike for you. The MT07 has a fun engine, is a good commuter and can wheelie well but if you've been spoilt by ANYTHING decent in the past then the it makes sense that the MT07 will disappoint. It's light weight, short wheel base and torquey engine is what made it a legend. When the MT07 released out back in 2014 it didn't have much competition, then the KTM Duke 790 came out, then every other manufacturer just kept coming out with better iterations of light-weight affordable naked bikes.

Obviously once you're in those higher rpms it'll be a lot faster than the CB, it's a faster bike after all, but in terms of simple acceleration from a standstill it's probably not much quicker. The CBR650R is very different in that aspect being more of a sports touring bike so it makes a lot of torque at low rpms (for an I4) meaning it'll pull really hard in almost every gear

I have an mt07 2021 I bought it new 3 years ago and i did a lot of modifications to it i 100% agree that it should have usd forks since the r7 (witch is essentially the same bike) has them, i mounted custom made mounts for radial calipers by brembo and full ohlins suspensions including a steering damper it’s very fun and i enjoy riding it more than my s1k still it’s not a proper “sporty” naked in the end it’s just opinions i love your content keep it up

Both were nice, probably becouze i daily a 450 supermoto and oh damn its raw power, the brakes, ergonomics and handling are tiring after a longer drive 😂

I got a XSR 700, and took my lessons on a MT-07, and they're both basically the same bike. The truth is that this bike hasn't changed much since 2014, while the rest of the industry has put everything they got into making good competitors to it because of how popular it is. I'm happy with mine because I got it for a great price, but brand new it's a much harder sell. The fix would be pretty easy though, just offer a SP version with the R7's improved suspension and brakes and everyone wins. For your MT, I think some upgrades to the suspension and brakes can really transform it and make it a bike you can love, but you can also just get a Duke 790 and be done with it. I'd look at whichever option is cheaper. As for my XSR, I love the engine, the compact size, the looks, the ride. The only thing that lets it down is the suspension. I'll have to decide if I want to upgrade it or sell it and get something else when I get my full license. It could make for an awesome cafe racer with some good mods.

I've been saying all that for years. Where I'm from it costs a whopping 9.5k. Had 2 long term rentals: a 1st gen and a 2nd gen. The only thing to like is the engine. That butter frame and poggo suspensions plus the weak brakes made me ask why it is so expensive, and the conclusion was "oh yeah, everyone has one, it sells like hot cakes", so they upped the price alot.

Maybe not comment worthy but im going through a tough time so here we go regardless. I got into motorcycles in the second half of 2021 when i lost my second job in a year due to covid and I started a job at an estate just outside of George 5km there and 5km back, it might sound silly nos but money was and still is tight and all i could think about was getting a bike to save on some petrol money. Ive been a car guy all my life and your videos have been a guideline of sorts. I started on a honda steed 400 for a year and then bought a honda cbr 600 f4 that i would not trade for the world. I agree that the MT-07 feels different than its sisters. Most of the MTs are more sporty, and the 07 feels more relaxed. Have you tried a FZ6N/Fazer 600? They're older but have a nice 4 cil 98hp engine that sounds awesome, plus you can ride them relaxed or sporty if you want to.

I feel this rn. I have an 06 zx6r and just sold my Tracer 900 GT and bought a DRZ400sm because I thought that I wanted to do supermoto shenanigans with my friends. Most of them don't have supersports anymore and none of them have touring bikes like Tracers. I thought that if I bought a sumo I would have fun with it and I could hang out with them more. And while that is technically true, it's a lot more fun to ride with them on the DRZ instead of my zx6r or tracer, I just don't like the bike itself. It's not the kind of riding I enjoy. I like touring. I like long trips. And I like going fast with my 636. I've only had the DRZ for 2 weeks and I deeply regret selling my Tracer already. Most of the time when I ride I'm by myself. We all work. We all have lives. We don't always have time to ride together. And riding together is the only time I seem to enjoy it. Most of my time riding during the week is spent on my 35 minute commute and/or running errands. On weekends I usually ride around and would occasionally take the Tracer on longer day or weekend trips. Now that I no longer have it, I realize how much I miss the ability to do so and how much I miss the comfortability on the freeway. I'm very glad I still have my 636 because if I was stuck with just the DRZ I would go insane. I will probably try to get my hands on a used 21+ Tracer 9 this fall or winter.

I think this is probably the best learner bike out there. It comes with nothing, it has no rider aids and you learn how to ride with the bare minimum. However maintenance is cheap and cheap parts if you're in your first year and fucking up some maintenance items. I had my 2015 MT07 and I'm really not complaining except for the terrible suspension

The OG Yamaha MT was a massive cruiser engine with suspension and brakes from R1. And the original MT-03 had the 660cc single from the XT. My how times have changed. If you like the way that the KTM rides but want a little more oomph try an Aprilia Shiver 750. I have a gen 1 & the riding position is close to my Duke 200. A friend has the gen 2 that has higher mounted footpegs & a sportier riding position. They both have everything attached correctly (USD forks, radially mounted brakes etc) and have around a 15 kW advantage over an equivalent MT-07. And, at least here in Australia, they're criminally under rated so they're cheap, especially for an Italian V Twin.

I got a new mt07 in 2022. I love my bike to death, but it's far from perfect. The engine is a PEACH. In my opinion an absolutely perfect engine for city commuting and backroads. Extremely torquey and engaging and excited and eager and just GAH. I LOVE that engine. It seriously makes the bike. It's just so insanely fun. However, the suspension is an absolute joke. It didn't bother me as much when I started riding the bike, but over time it's become more and more clear to me that it really holds the motorcycle back. In any corner that isn't perfectly smooth I have like zero confidence to properly lean it over. It's somehow too squishy and too harsh at the exact same time. I'm pretty over it. And upgrading the suspension in really expensive, unfortunately. Otherwise I haven't really had issues with the brakes or vague handlebar input as you describe. And I probably just don't know enough to notice anything wrong with the frame.

On a FZ09 now, but I miss my FZ07. 07 stock bars are awfully, but the risers are just mounted in rubber bushing. Put a fender washer under the top yoke to lock it solid. 09 and 07 both have bad suspension from Yamaha. I went full aftermarket suspension on both. The 07 is SO much more nimble. On open roads an 07 is underpowered compared to an 09. On the mountain roads I live on, the 09 feels like a big bike with good manners while the 07 felt like riding a wasp. Only reason I'm on an 09 now is I'm 6'3" and it's just more comfortable.

There's a lot of negativity towards bigger motorcycles. Some of it is warranted; we can't just keep escalating size and features forever. Smaller bikes have their place, but so do bigger bikes. I ride a Super Tenere because I'm very tall and ride year round, so features like weather protection, shaft drive and surviving drops are very important to me. The weight can be a problem, but is also a plus for when I ride past road trains when I cross the Nullarbor in Australia (3 times so far). A lot of people look at the excesses of some big bikes and seem to venerate smaller bikes, even when they have some glaring flaws or weaknesses. Japanese manufacturers seem to really cheap out on suspension at the low end (and mid-range, too). My friend's RC390 was like a real life video game, but some parts were very brittle, expensive and harder to get. Though we should consider the price point a budget bike is built to, we should be able to critique them, as you have done.
