It’s really coming together now Patrick😊 French toilets really did leave a lot to be desired! Any wonder you used to see people going at the roadside ! I remember staying in Italian Barracks and the Officer apologising for the drop box toilets. I can’t remember the name of the barracks. It was in the region of Monte Cassino Abbey and the region in the great Aquila earthquake. There was a Regiment of your Mountain Troops stationed there too. I was there in a ceremonial rôle with a British TA Field Hospital that had been on exercise in the region when the earthquake happened and were able to help. They were being awarded a Papal medal each for their service. I remember the local bank had collapsed and they couldn’t retrieve the gold in the vault as it was too unsafe. Even three years after the devastation the site of the bank had to be guarded by Soldiers.

@@bugler75 the Abruzzo earthquake of 2009 was a real disaster, made even more complicated by the fact that the regional capital L'Aquila was the epicentre, so the whole emergency command structure had to be brought in from neighbouring regions. The first response was by the local Finance Guard mountain units. Going back to the subject of latrines, apparently during WW1 the British disliked taking over French sections of the front because of their appalling latrines.
