Chapman MFG Mini Ratchet - EDC Friendly 1/4" Ratchet

I have purchased several different mini ratchets in search of what I would consider best for EDC. In this video we will be looking at one of the very few American manufacturers to offer a mini ratchet. This is the Chapman MFG CM-13 Mini Ratchet.

I like how I can't afford anything that you ever featured and it is not even easily available in my country and yet I keep watching and making opinions about it. By the way I do agree that the surge is the closest thing to a perfect multitool with the swisschamp being 2nd

Just out of curiosit, where are you located? It might be less expensive to have a have the tools exported from a U.S. Store .

@@GabeMacDonnell I'm from Morocco and even though the expense of exporting stuff is a big factor of me calling these tools "expensive" but the main reason is that the tools are already pretty" expensive" . our economy is very different so the feeling of buying a 150$ surge to us is like buying a 1500$ dollar tool for an american , it is not that we are poor it is just that most things here like services ,food, transportation and rent is about 7 to 10 times cheaper than a first world country so tools from leatherman or victorinox feel expensive that why they are so hard to find and almost impossible to find for a relatively good price. I'm sorry for the long reply I just don't want someone to feel like I'm not interested in replying to their question. I hope you have a delightful day and thanks for the question

I have many friends in Algeria, (not suggesting the 2 countries are the same,) & they have had great difficulty finding or keeping employment, which led to the hirak. I visited Morocco briefly, but wish I could have stayed longer. The country is beautiful & the people very kind. But I also understand how difficult the economy is for the people who live there. In the US, the economy & level of demand often lowers prices, (though we have a huge problem of unemployed and underpaid workers.) For example, I work in hospital maintenance which doesn't pay very much, especially compared to a similar job in France, for example. But a Leatherman Wave costs $100, which is very reasonable, if not cheap. It is less than a day's wages, & also a week's groceries, or roughly 1/8 of my apartment rent. In France, a Wave cost €150, ($175,) and I imagine it is more in Morocco. Ironically, several years ago, Swiss Tools were quite inexpensive here: I bought my Swiss Tool for $50, & my Spirit for $40. Now they are more expensive than most Leathermans, although their quality justifies that cost. I appreciate the response. If there is a tool you need that you are having difficulty obtaining, let me know & perhaps I can help or at least find someone who can. For now, bislama, my friend!

I hope you get a higher paying job or a pay rise very soon, I don't have a good feel of what is a good wage or not in america here in morocco a teacher makes 17~32$ a day which is the "normal" not rich but not poor kind of payment and a university professor makes about 67~84$ which is on the rich side but anyways I wish the best for you and hopefully you'll get the wage you want very soon. Thank you for the kind offer. Wages here have a very large range. An average wage for a person in their 30’s might be around $150 per day, but depending where they live, that is probably not enough to actually save money, especially as many Americans are in large amounts of debt. If you’re looking for your first multi tool, I may be able to get a used Leatherman Wave or Rebar; we use them at work and at the years end replace any worn ones, but they usually can be made to work like new. There’s a few workers who also might like one so I can’t guarantee it. Also, my supply house, (large tool & parts stores in the US,) has a few old Crescent Multitools made by Bear for under $30. They are like a mix of an old Leatherman PST, and a Swisstool, (Swisstool bought the design.) They are made very well, but like a PST or Swiss Army Knife the tools do not lock into place. They are very secure, & mine is excellent. I actually bought mine for traveling overseas, as many countries don’t allow locking knives. I was wondering when you’d get around to Chapman! My mini ratchet is a real problem solver at work. It’s not as elegant or versatile as the Victorinox but it’s likely stronger, & significantly less $. The bits aren’t the hardest, but their fit is excellent. In fact, in particular their slotted & torx bits are among the best I’ve used, despite being a little softer than some others, (perhaps a result of the machined manufacturing process?) they’re up there w/ Zephyr, Apex, Qualtool & PB Swiss. I know some gunsmiths who rely on them, & in my line of work, their slotted bits are commonly used to open up ridiculously expensive autoclave & washer panels. Plus, I love that they’re dedicated to American manufacturing & respond to customer feedback. Thanks for the review!

I keep one in my "EDC" maxpedition bag mini took kit thing, super handy little tool. I pair it with my Surge in the same way as you pictured with the screwdriver. I've got a longer shanked .25" extension, pass it through the Chapman and into the Leatherman extension. Kinda neat thing is that you can actually drill holes in wood with it pretty easily with that setup.

I've had a couple of these for years. They've been good, along with their extensions. They are available with different colors on each side so one can quickly tell which direction the ratchet is oriented. To secure it in the Leatherman case you could treat it like a fire steel and have a short shock cord loop or elastic band through the ratchet hole and then over the handle end. All over the case broad elastic loop. Hope that makes sense.

Great to know these are still being made. I had an old (15+ yrs) Xcelite ratchet that looks 100% the same that I incorporated in a Skeletool frame. Glad I can still find those for sale.

I cut a half inch crescent wrench down to fit my EDC pouch, and angle ground the cut handle into a pry bar. Now I have an adjustable wrench, and pry bar/chizle, that I can adjust down onto screwdriver bits and use as a driver. 🍻

That’s a pretty cool ratchet. I like that’s it’s a lesser known brand. I’ve checked out their website and they make some pretty cool versions. I’ve ordered two. One thats flame anodized and another that comes with a dipped handle. They also make some in really nice wooden cases, might be worth checking out!

You should check out the Lang. Been made for years in the US, and made for many companies over the year's. MAC Blue point, Craftsman...ect you name it. Not extremely small, but it's smooth, affordable, and has a nice thumb wheel.

I will not touch my gun screws with anything other than Chapman bits, just not worth it to ruin screws using garbage. I started with one of the pocket sets, added the case and accessories, and all the specific gun screws that I needed. I filled that thing up pretty darn quickly, now I need to get the larger case because there are more bits I have found myself needing.

I have the 5.11 mini ratchet and it has served me well, but it is not made in the USA but it has a mini prybar

Checkout the Topeak ratchet, it has some cool features. It looks like a pass-thru, but that's deceiving. Only the included extension can pass through, when desired, so that the set can be used as a T-handle when desired, rather than a ratchet.

Ben don't knock this til u use it, I have my 7331 kit from my G.E. days as a electronic tech working on DOD equipment , I STILL use it for fishing reel work they are rock solid & well built

I found a similar mini ratchet likely made 10- 20 years ago. The bits have a knurled round end with cut in detents. I have a small bit driver for standard bits.
