I’ve noticed in the past that a lot of Chapo’s analysis of Trump voters is pretty off base just because they really aren’t familiar with these people in their daily lives. As someone with a lot of Trump supporting family, I can say that this profile of the Villages is 100% accurate. So much of their support for him is based in cultural grievance. In my experience very little of it has to do with material interests, because their material interests are secure no matter what.

@jemimallah Yeah they've talked repeatedly about how libs soying over stuff like Hillbilly Elegy is misguided and the media narrative that Trump won because of some working class revolt against the Democrats is wrong. It was the same old demographics (white middle-upper middle class evangelicals, older voters) that usually carry Republicans to victory showing up, the Clinton campaign screwing around trying to run up the score in Georgia and North Carolina, and all the while ignoring states like PA, MI, WI, etc. that it figured was in the bag. It was honestly refreshingly contrary at the time and has been borne out by subsequent elections.
