Elian Gonzalez was taken by his mother on a refugee boat to Miami. His father was still in Cuba and wanted his son back. The US military stormed the house where Elian was staying with family, found him hiding in a closet with a family member, took him, and returned him to Cuba. Was an enormous story at the time.

I saw this at 13 when it originally aired on comedy central and I barely noticed it was him until years later when I watched it again..not hating but bill burr sort of faded for me currently in terms of his comedy. Not sure if it has to due with his recent popularity or his new younger fans but he's just ehh to me lately

So it became a whole standoff about the legitimacy of the Cuban government, etc etc. In the end, he was physically seized and sent back to his father, or, if you're a conservative, "kidnapped and sent to an authoritarian regime." He has since become a hero and symbol of Cuba. Met Castro and everything. He recently took a seat in their congress.

Elian Gonzalez was born in Cuba but defected to the United States with is mother as a baby while is Father stayed in Cuba. Later his mother died. Since he had spent most of his life up to that point in the U.S., they tried to have him adopted by relatives in the U.S. but his father fought it in court and won. Elian was then sent back to Cuba to live with his father.

The mother of Elián González took him when he was only six and tried to leave Cuba for the U.S. in 1999 with twelve other Cubans. The boat sank, and most of the passengers died, but Elián was rescued by fishermen who turned him over to the U.S. Coast Guard, who released him to an uncle who lived in Miami. Elián's father still lived in Cuba and wanted him back (it turned out the mother had taken Elián without the father's permission). Attorney General Janet Reno ordered Elián to be sent back to Cuba, not as a normal deportation but because of parental rights. González's family in Cuba refused to give him up, and it became a cause celebre among the Miami Cuban community, most of whom believed it was wrong to ever send a refugee back to Cuba. Eventually, Reno sent federal agents to take Elián from the family by force, and there's a famous picture of an armed agent taking the child at rifle point. The whole thing was very polarizing. Many non-Cuban Latinos sided with the federal government, and believed it was hypocritical for so many non-Latinos to oppose Elián being sent back to his father while being so eager to deport Latinos from other countries.
