Oh my goodness. English is my second/third language and of all the tutorials I have taken to understand the subject on syllables, this has done it for me. Finally it makes sense to me. Thank you for sharing

hello .. Hi there .... I am confused with this pattern of words .... please help me out with the word "FIRE" and its likes ... they say it is a one syllable word because obviously it contains a "sneaky" "e" .... but we feel as we utter it as if we are pronouncing two vowel sound ( fai-ye'r') ...

Maybe it was just me but I like how he used more complicated words as examples (many other teachers use "boat" "soap" etc.). But I agree with saravleite, he didn't give explanations on why divide words in the way but not in any other way... It seems like you must know the pronunciation first before dividing it into syllabuses and it should be an opposite way.

Initially your video looked like the best one I had found....but then I noticed you did not separate the syllables correctly. Anatomical is an-a-tom-i-cal. Oxford Dictionary and Merriam-Webster Dictionary both agree with me. Umbilical is also separated incorrectly in your video. The correct way to separate the syllables is um-bil-i-cal. Your teaching style is good, but you should have first verified that what you are teaching is correct because many people will learn incorrectly from you. Shame, shame....

I am sorry, but I find this extremely confusing... The division seems pretty random to me. I mean, why an/at/om/ic/al and not a-na-to-mi-cal?!! The teacher does not provide any logical explanations to help people understand why words are dividided like that and not in any other way. I have been an English teacher for 20 years and this topic remains a puzzling mystery to me!

Hello, Of course my English not very well as you English, he has mentioned through vowels for Ex. he starts with An- then the next letter is vowel At- then the next vowel Om then Ic- and so on ..

saravleite - It has to do with where you place the emphasis when you pronounce the word. Say anatomical out loud. Does it sound like Ay Na Toe Me Cal? Or does it sound more like An At Om Ic Al? The emphasis goes on the letter o.

I don't agree with you at all saravleite
@laracroftvideos
@laracroftvideos 6 жыл бұрын
I know this reply is one year late but the reason why the word is 'an/at/om/ic/al' and not 'a-na-to-mi-cal' is because if it were the latter, the word wouldn't have been pronounced the way it is - that is AN-uht-OM-ik-uhl (with the primary stress on the "OM" syllable and secondary on "AN"). You need to have closed vowels for this word because these are the vowels used when pronouncing it. If "anatomical" was pronounced as ay-nuh-TOH-muh-kul then you could divide it the way you did. Whenever a vowel isn't followed by a consonant, it's an open vowel 90% of the time. Note that you can NEVER predict pronunciation based on a word's spelling, but you can give a very good estimate when you know how a word is pronounced but not how it's spelled (based on whether the vowels in the word are open or closed). Hope this helped!

About the VCV (short), how to speaker in real speaking? For example: In Cambridge Dictionary, i see: They write the word 'menu' is /ˈmen.ju/, but i hear many native speakers say /ˈme.nju/ They write the word 'city' is /ˈsɪt̬·i/, but i hear many native speakers say /ˈsɪ.t̬i/ /ˈmen.ju/ and /ˈme.nju/, which is correct? Is there any different when speaking these two syllable types. /ˈsɪt̬·i/ and /ˈsɪ.t̬i/, which is correct? Is there any different when speaking these two syllable types. Why people usually speak different with syllable division in dictionary?

Tks sir but with all respect dividing syllables still stands unresolved for many as there is no logical way or rule. With other lecturers the same words will be differently divided.
