Please note that there are four more syllable patterns. Not all words have only closed or only open syllables in the entire word. Sometimes you have to use parts of a word to demonstrate the skill. Know also there are irregular words or words that are partially decodable - where only a part of the word can be decoded using the rules that govern the syllable patterns. If part of the word does not follow the standard syllable division rules and the rules that govern the syllable patterns, then that word is an irregular word. I think this video is a good introduction or review of these two-syllable patterns. I often advocate for following up with a V-CE syllable rule because it is easy to transition students from understanding how the vowel in the word p-a-n (closed syllable; short vowel sound) goes to p-a-n-e (V-CE; long vowel sound). Good video and effort. I would only use words that do not have an irregularity in them such as 'baby' or 'color'. The / marking is also a forward slash and not a backslash. * sorry * Thank you for a job well done!

Paper is also not an open/closed words. It is open/V-R (or R-controlled) syllable. The "er" makes one sound not two. There are 6 syllable types not including final stable syllables like "tion". When teaching words with more than one syllable, your word list should be limited to the syllable type you are introducing and ones that have already been mastered. This is a great reading program, but the teacher needs more training to master the concept so that students don't get confused.

Paper and Baby are both open syllable. Checked on other sources as well. Seems she explains wrong.

In the word "paper", there are 2 syllables , the first is open syllable in both American and British English but the other syllable "per" is open in British English (as they do not pronounce final"r"; it is however a closed syllable in the kinds of Englishes that pronounce final "r" , let us check the phonemic transcription to clarify : /ˈpeɪpər/ and /ˈpeɪpə(r)/. Parentheses represent the optional constituents. SMOSD must therefore be followed to learn syllabic divisions

This is a very confusing video. The letter is representing a vowel sound - long /e/ and is an open syllable in this example. Vowels are speech sounds that are produced with an "open" vocal tract. Consonants are speech sounds where the breath is obstructed in some way - thus the mouth is "closed" in some way to articulate a consonant sound. Letters and combinations of letters represent these sounds in our language.

Isn't true that in baby, the y acts as a vowel and therefore it is cv, making it an open syllable, with long sound e?
@Varyaaz
@Varyaaz 3 жыл бұрын
Yes it is pronounced as a short vowel; check its phonemic transcription; it is /ˈbeɪbi/ it means it is /ˈbeɪ. bi/; 2 syllables

The "by" in the word baby is not two consonants. The 'Y" is considered a vowel in that word thereby making both of those syallables open.
@Varyaaz

100% accuracy is only achieved when we divide syllables on the basis of phonemic transcription of words, not their orthographic representation ; then only can we understand how many vowels/ consonants are actually there in a word

You didn't explain the different sound of vocal lounge and vocal short! Is Climb a closed syllable? How does it pronounce?
@magdyyoussef4729
@magdyyoussef4729 5 жыл бұрын
I think the word climb/klaɪm/ is a word with one open syllable. This is because the letter m, which traps the vowel i, is pronounce /em/, in other words it starts with a vowel sound. That’s why the i says its name(the long i) Sound of the letter rather than it’s shape is the key.

Hi, Please let me know why we haven't divided the word habit into ha/bit rather hab/it ?
@tinhnguyen-iu6ef
@tinhnguyen-iu6ef 4 жыл бұрын
hi @Carey Ann Strelecki , assumption that we dont know how to read the "habit" so did have any rule that we can divide hab-it rather than ha-bit ?.
@AprilKarl
@AprilKarl 3 жыл бұрын
@@tinhnguyen-iu6ef this is where you try two options and see which one makes the most sense. So you have to choose between ha/bit or hab/it. If you try ha/bit, that would make the "a" an open syllable making it a long vowel sound. When you pronounce it that way, it says "haybit" which is not correct. Let's try hab/it- that makes the vowel closed which makes the "a" a short vowel sound. When you pronounce it, says hab-it, which is the correct pronunciation.

@@AprilKarl thank you for that but I am still somewhat confused because what if a child does not have context for the word habit? Your explanation works if habit is in the child's lexicon. This video is great, but it assumes kids know how to decode her examples. I'm not clear why we break words into syllables if kids know how to read/decode the words unless there is some underlined spelling support that I am missing. Please help me understand

What about a word "atom"? Why the first leter "a" sounds like it is a closed syllable, whereas in the following words; agent, able, apron, open, the first letters make sound of open syllables, why so?

OK ,I see that you separate the word like broke it up ,but if you had to put the word like begin in a category of open or close the whole word ,what would it be open or close ,Because be is open gin is close so is the whole word begin open or close.

@sodonewithit
@sodonewithit 4 жыл бұрын
The word “blind” is a closed syllable even though the vowel sound is long. The exceptions to the rule where you will see a long vowel in a closed syllable are words with -ild, -old, -olt, -ost, -ind words.

Vicky Popova it’s a very common pronunciation for native speakers in the southern United States. Definitely a native speaker as non-native speakers don’t tend to learn this particular dialect or whatever.
