I wish they had someone who understood english society to explain all the strange things Frank doesn't pick up. 1. The boys could climb into a window 2. Who would Frank call? Who would pay to have a phone installed? 3. The gardener always lived in their own house. It was a perk to not have to live in the masion under supervision 4. What would be easier to heat, a small cabin or a great masion? Also, people mysteriously died there. 5. (Should have been further up), there were many hallways, servans stairs and different stairs that usually were in mansions

They probably apperated that same day and have just settled in when Frank notices them seeing as the fire would be needed to keep warm in the night.

@jankatkaromka yeah that's kind of a given It starts with a general perspective and then goes to Frank's perspective and the whole time Harry's watching the dream happen but not from either of these perspectives probably from somebody else's but who actually Google it's implied it's got to be for voldemort's perspective because that's Harry's link clearly it isn't otherwise he would have known of Baltimore was thinking about and not only heard the conversation he's actually in his mind and therefore wouldn't be as stalled, but if it was from the kitties perspective he probably wouldn't have gotten the entire conversation because she wasn't there for the whole thing And we know he must have heard at least everything Frank heard because he talks about hearing them discuss murder when he wakes up and I think he recognizes the term the quidditch world cup from the dream but can't remember it's importance just like you can remember the same thing about Bertha you remember the name being familiar but can't remember how it is important until it's too late

Selective deafness is common in war veterans. A bomb could go off and they wouldn't hear it but if their grandchild snuck down the hallway while the veteran slept they would hear it perfectly and wake up right away. Frank has that.

The book gives no reason for his stiff leg either, but I still assume it's war related. I get that he's old, but he has a good ear, and a good leg, which kind of implies some damage, not just old age. context clues are there for this to be the case imo

Wouldn't Dumbledore check on the house soon after Frank's death if he was the owner? I would think part of Dumbledores reason to employ Frank if was the owner would be to get regular reports about suspicious activity, and act as soon as he noticed Frank stopped informing him. And I bet Dumbledore could take out Wormtail and Voldemort in baby form.

@@arthurdoktor I don't think that Voldemort and Wormtail actually stay in the Riddle House for the whole year. I think they take over the Crouch residence after freeing Barty, Jr. So, Dumbledore could be the owner, find out that Frank went missing, which would explain why he brings it up later to Harry, go to the house and not find anything. It would also be a convenient place for him to go to when he is searching for horcruxes before going to the Gaunt shack between OotP and HBP.

I actually think it's a very interesting question: How wealthy is Dumbledore? This is rarely something that is ever talked about, even hardcore Potterheads. If he is wealthy it could give him even more influence on the saga. Just the amount of information he could collect by just bribing people on-top to his magical abilities is almost limitless, especially considering how much influence Lucius Malfoy had. This could also explain Mundungus Fletchers loyalty towards Dumbledore. Yes it's said that he helped Flechter, but its very likely that this "helping" involved money in some form or another.

@@LegioXXI ​ Well considering that Albus has been a Hogwarts teacher for years, the headmaster for decades, Supreme Mugwump, Chief Warlock, and many other prominent positions in wizarding society, I'd say he is pretty wealthy. We do not get that much information about his ancestors though, so it is unknown whether he had generational wealth.

I've always assumed the wealthy man who owned the riddle house was Dumbledore. Who else would make sure Frank was well cared for? Dumbledore also knew about Frank dying so he was keeping tabs on him.

It’s not that hard to believe some rich benefactor owns the property and keeps it for tax loss or maybe to sell down the line so he pays frank to keep it nice

A few notes: 1) Wealthy aristocrats will dress for dinner and retire to a sitting room after dinner. Therefore, the wait staff may have cleaned up and went to bed and the family was still in their dinner things. 2) it was a status symbol and fashionable to have a decorative hermit who lived on your grounds and cared for your gardens. It makes sense that that concept would evolve into the gardner living on the grounds (and to keep muddy boots and dirty hands out of the manor house). Also, also, actually, actually: Since Wormtail goes by his Maurader name from here on out, Snape also now knows who all of the Maurders are! He now knows that when the map was insulting him that Peter was part of that.

My understanding of Voldemort accusing Peter of lying when he says he thought Bertha Jorkins might be useful is that Peter is basically a 3-stooges level minion, just stumbling into helping. So he gets himself caught at a bar, and lures or kidnaps her back to wherever he and Voldemort are hiding just because he knows he can’t let her go now that she knows he’s alive but he can’t actually kill her. He’s essentially rescued by baby Voldemort who can barely hold a wand, and Voldemort is the one who decides to question her before killing her.

Just wanted to say: snakes do in fact have ears. They don't have the external ears like we do that capture and direct sound, but they have all the inner ear mechanisms and ear holes on the sides of their head! They can hear sounds including speech.

I'm not sure if it's a mistake or an American edit thing. What edition is your most recent one? I listened to the Stephen Fry UK audiobooks, which to my knowledge has not been updated since the first UK edition, and that said "curse" and "obstacle", but a US PDF I found which seems to be the first, or one of the first, editions say "murder" and J and Ben bought new books for this. Even if they haven't updated the text within the Brian Selznick covers since their release they would still be up to date as of the 20th anniversary when those released.

This has driven me crazy for years - I’ve read and re-read this book dozens of times (it’s my favorite!) and no, there is no planned murder at this point… when I found out the British version said “curse” everything made so much more sense. It is interesting that Harry's vision from Voldemort (as well as his second vision later in the year during his devinition class) is different from the visions he has in the fifth and in the seventh book. In these later books he sees everything through Voldemort's eyes and feels his feelings but right now he seems to be just an observer of the scene (while he can't see Voldemort himself). I wonder wether this change of his point of view is caused by the fact that Voldemort has got his body back or because the bond between them has doubled because Voldemort took Harry's blood.

I think Voldemort still looked pretty non-human before trying to kill Harry: He is described as much different than his handsome self when he interviewed for DADA job and on the night he tried to kill Harry the kids trick-or-treating say “Nice costume mister” which clearly makes it seems he looks like something unnatural.

Riddle House Owner - my interpretation of this was that it was the Ministry or Dumbledore. They knew that Frank was innocent as they believed Morfin had committed the murder, and so I've thought that either the Ministry or Dumbledore bought the Riddle House to ensure that Frank would still be employed and wouldn't become destitute because of a wizard's actions

The Hanged Man tarot card does not have anything to do with death, and most depictions show the figure hanging from the ankle. When I read, I usually interpret it as either a change in perspective, a pause, not being able to or not the right time to act, yet. Possibly biding your time, which I think still fits really well with the chapter.

The "One Death" mentioned is not a specific person, but merely the death required for Voldemort to make Nagini a Horcrux. Perhaps he knew he wanted a another Horcrux to get to the 7-part soul before his return, and thus needed an excuse to get a kill in. As such, Frank Bryce ended up being the "1 death" before the path to Harry Potter was clear.

I’m wondering if the revival potion they use requires the one who is to be revived to have a torn soul, so they can offer a piece as a sacrifice for regeneration. When Voldy and Wormtail are discussing waiting until after the cup, theyre not talking about attacking Moody, but Crouch Sr. Bertha revealed to them that Jr. Is alive, but to move before the cup is to risk exposure; Sr. Could die, or the imperius curse be discovered or removed due to all the extra security. That would ruin everything for them.

In defence of Wormtail and his lack of knowledge of the big plan, Albanian forests aren't exactly well-accessible resorts (even for Muggles), so it seems that it took quite some time for him to reach the place while staying undetected. Ludo Bagman said he expected Bertha to return to the Ministry thinking it's still July, so she must've gone on vacation in mid-July (I seem to remember somebody said at the Quiddich Cup that she'd been missing for a month but don't remember where that was in the book). And when Wormtail met Bertha and overpowered her (whatever that means, ew), it must've been the second half of July. Then they reach Voldemort and either place him in a body and then torture Bertha or first torture Bertha and then create the mini-body, but both actions required time and ingredient-gathering for Wormtail. So I think that when they settle down in Little Hangleton, it had hardly been two weeks since they started their abominable journey, not two months, and they were too busy to discuss long-term plans

In the UK version of the books that murder related line from Wormtail is actually "curse", then I think it makes much more sense, Voldemort references someone else disappearing and I think that is Moody being kidnapped.

Isn't the "One more murder" just Dumbledore ? With Dumbledore's reputation as being "The one man Voldemort fears" and any second part of the plan that doesn't happen due to the twin cores would definitely require Dumbledore to be out of the way.

Calling him Wormtail feels very calculated. Like Voldemort by calling him that is saying "look I am your friend, same as those other guys. I know your secrets." while also reminding him constantly of his udder betrayal of the only people who truly cared for him so Peter is alone in the world without Voldemort.

50:33 Fun fact: Snake handlers refer to getting venom from a snake as milking. That is how we get snake venom for the antivenoms. So, Naginis venom is deadly enough to almost kill Arther Weasley in Order of the Phoenix but Voldemort must be able to dilute it into some restorative potion. Sort of like an anti phoenix whos tears naturally heal others in the story..

Well there are venoms that don't kill you when you trink it or ingest it only if it enters the blood stream that's why it is called "venome" it's connected to the word vein. Curare is a very good example for this. A poison is dagnerous if you ingest it but not necessarily if it enters your blood. I think since Nagini is not a real snake but a Maledictus therefore her venom could helü Voldemort maintain his baby-form.

I know it’s a small detail, but when the villagers talk about how Frank “had a hard war” or that “the war turned him funny”, that sounds as if they’re talking about WW2 in the past tense, despite the fact that it hadn’t ended yet at that point. Is that a result of JK Rowling’s self-confessed ineptitude at maths, or would people have actually phrased it like that in those days, rather than saying something like “he had a hard time fighting” or “the war has turned him funny”?

To be fair, if Tom Riddle decided to stay with Merope or at least care for the baby, maybe she wouldn’t have lost the will to live. She could’ve passed down Slytherin’s locket to Tom Jr, and maybe even the ring. He wouldn’t have had to covet those things or overcompensate to demonstrate his belonging in the wizarding world. So I kind of see him turning more into a Lockhart sort of character but just actually competent 😂

I think Nagini knows that Frank is in the house, has communicated this to Voldy, and Voldy is just doing what he does: monologuing. He doesn't care if Frank hears, he's gonna kill him anyway. Either that or it's Barty Crouch Sr.

Repeated mentions of Frank noticing a lack of dust being disturbed despite there obviously being people in the house- they probably apparated directly upstairs? Rather than that being contradictory.
