So obviously I'm waaaay late coming into the convo here (hey, I had a baby!) but I didn't love this movie. And I waited FOREVER for this to come out near me. Stylistically it was absolutely fabulous, so so so well done. But it felt unbalanced to me somehow. Like, there was no "good" at all to contrast the bad. If that makes sense. I also didn't find it all that scary, but witches don't really do it for me (unless it was 90's adaptation of the Dahl book when I was 5--freaked me out!!!). Love that you did a movie review though. You are my #1 A+ booktuber, and I feel like we have the similar taste in movies too.

In The part when Black Phillip talked to Thomasin, I don't think I've ever had a reaction like that one. I felt my body go numb and tingle at the same time. I was fascinated and completely terrified in that scene. It was exactly like "I shouldn't be seeing this" and "I can't stop watching" and "this is not real this is not happening oh god this is not happening".

THIS. Thank you so much for making this review! I too felt at times like I shouldn't be watching this. I felt like an intruder in this family's life at their lowest. I love typical horror movies but this surpasses them by FAR. It actually hurt my feelings when the friends I went with to see this didn't like it. They didn't like that there weren't any "jump scares". I was so frustrated! The part in the attic with the whole family was one of the most intense scenes I've ever seen. I held my breath the entire time. And the end horrified me. I had trouble looking at the screen. Over all, this one is definitely up there on my list with The Shining. It's one of the most real horror films I've ever seen and I really can't sing its praises enough:

Yes!! I ended up going to see this by myself, as none of my friends or family were brave enough to come with me 😔 but in a way I am quite happy I got to experience on my own as it made it so much more intense. It absolutely blew me away,, it feels as though there is threat pervading through every scene, every second of this film, and the realism made it so much more unsettling and disturbing. Glad you liked it too!

I would like to hear what you think of The Visit. I saw it at the theater with my husband and we enjoyed it so much. It was somewhat of a redemption for M. Knight Shyamalan, for us, at least. Also, "It Follows".

I loooved this movie and I'm glad you enjoyed it too! I went in with such high expectations and was still amazed when I left the session. It was really crowded and some people booed when it ended which was annoying, they were probably expecting a jump scare movie though

My fella actually rented this film about three days ago for about $2 at Family Video. Before I watched your short review, I actually hated this movie, but now I think I have an appreciation for it. It really does seem like something you aren't supposed to watch, and originally I interpreted that as a horror film with no true plot. Looking back, the oddities of this film are growing on me. I may have to go back and rent the film again for closer analysis.

My husband told me about this movie and I was super pumped to see it on my birthday come to find out only one theater was playing it and it was too far out of the way to drive to. I was bummed. Can't wait for it to come out on DVD.

"If you liked Ouija, you probably won't like this." I've mentioned that to so many people whenever I talk about The Witch. I feel like the movie is for the literary crowd in so many ways. It really rekindled my love for the history of witchcraft. I'm glad that the movie was very similar to the folklore. Wonderful review, as always :)

This movie was brilliant, I remember seeing it in theaters in my local place (Massachusetts) As a fan of witches, I just gobbled this movie up-I myself am a filmmaker, so the cinematography really grabbed me and the dialogue was also brilliant. :)
