Your methods clearly worked for you, but I would call some of them cheating.

Okay, old comment, but I feel this needs to be said. At least to me, cheating doesn't really make sense when it comes to art, especially when it's for a specific purpose like a game. You're working to achieve a purpose, sometimes that's the art itself, sometimes that's for a commercial project, sometimes that's to fit into something bigger like a game. If you can use something to more effectively and efficiently achieve that purpose, I see no problem using it. The only exceptions I can think of are things like tracing which in this case would either border on or be blatantly plagiarism. You can have a special appreciation for art made without these helpful tools-maybe that's why we like live music-but just because an artist uses them doesn't make it cheating. :)
