Having gotten your hands on this, what meaningfully distinguishes this game from Stars Without Number other than a few character sheet condensings and the presentation? What does it offer as a game that is unique?

I'm actually writing the review for this game as we speak and so I find myself asking this very same question. I would say the most interesting aspect is the universe/lore itself, but let's be honest, you can copy and paste that into any game. There really isn't much that hasn't been done before in another product. It looks good, it has tables to roll on, but mechanically speaking, it's a SWN lite game.

Also, this game makes a big deal about how everything is a hand-me-down and needs to be constantly repaired.

Huh. I know nothing about SWN, but I have to say the character creation seems a bit sparse, and tricky. It's very possible that you could play a character with negatives in all of their stats. Will you be going over the bonuses when you do the full review? Do they make being crippled in terms of stats more bearable? The art style reminds me a bit of Mothership, but I think I prefer the way they did things over this. Too much black. Way too grimdark! ;)

If you end up with you ability scores totalling in the negatives, you actually get some extra bonuses to sorta even it out. Given that you only need to roll a 12 or higher to succeed at skill tests (aside from combat) it isn't that bad. Sure your chances to succeed will be extremely low if you have to roll with a -3, but that still means you'd have a 25% to succeed.
