This video is very important to me personally, because I go through one of these journeys like every other Tuesday. Your characters aren't set in stone, they're like people, constantly evolving and growing alongside you. Don't be afraid to experiment, love that render Brookes.

I think one could also apply the lesson in this video to style; it isn't set in stone either, and your character designs are gonna reflect that. For years I wanted to draw realistically and I worried if I started leaning too much into a cartoonier style that my skills would atrophy or worse...people wouldn't like it. 😅 But there's no reason I can't do both, experiment, take a break, come back, etc.

This reminds me not of my drawings, but of my creative writing. I haven’t written anything since I graduated college two years ago, and during my finals two years I began working on a short story that turned into a novella. I never finished it. I can remember being so passionate about it though. It’s really hard to get back to it with what I dedicate my time to (drawing, video editing, streaming). I’m not sure how this video will help me with that it if this comment even relates at all but it just got me thinking about it.

The best option is to always sit on the idea! I used to throw away ideas every time I got stuck or just bored with them, but I think I've learned over time that the best work usually takes the most dedication (not to mention the most out of you). Thanks for another video!! 🥰🥰

Sometimes coming back to an old project it seems like there's a lot of "obvious" answers that weren't obvious at the time. It might feel unproductive to rest, but it does feel good when coming back in and just plowing through the problems.

I've had this story idea for years and made so many changes but it never really felt Right, until i actively spoke them out loud- instead of just writing them for myself until it's all done, i shared the process with my friends. So the fact that I had to explain the story, not just tell it, made me realize things its been missing

First off, this video was really well done. Second off: most of my creative ideas get tossed in the junk drawer simply because I can't figure out how to draw it. So they just eng up living rent free in the back of my head.

When I had an idea stuck on loop I started writing it into a fanfiction. Two years later I have 9 chapters written and still going strong. Sometimes the best thing to do is run with that idea if you can't get out of your head.

I'm in a similar creative boat. I have one big idea that I've been passionate about for years. I've spent countless hours writing little scenes involving the characters, but as soon as I try and actually think out a bigger narrative, I can't come up with how to chain these ideas together. Even after all this time, I feel like the characters and worlds aren't even that well developed. I also can't seem to develop a true passion for any other ideas, which is annoying. Nevertheless, I remain hopeful, and videos like these help me not only learn, but see that others are going through the same creative issues. Keep at it, everyone!

Honestly some good advice here. Sometimes it hurts to change up an idea that you love so much, but it can be for the better to watch it be recreated and (hopefully) succeed afterwards. The idea is never really lost, but evolved, and you never really forget the original idea when you reflect back on it

I did write down, well I typed it out, in a notes app. I have 2 of my characters’ personalities put down and I plan to review them and make any necessary edits as I see fit soon. It's extra hard for me because I've been working on a story for the last 4 months and, although I keep on adding things in worldbuilding including little quirks of certain characters and such, I still feel my writing has become stagnant and trying to hard to get a half baked product out. Luckily, I can identify the problem. I never used to focus solely on creating my story out of a feeling or emotion as I had plots that always came first. With this story, I'm giving it all up including my firstborn and my soul to creating atmosphere and, let me tell you, that is hard for an artist like me at the moment who is still nervous to convey that atmosphere and emotion in fear of losing it as, differing to a plot, you can't quite write a foggy vibe down like a plot. I'm trying to balance atmosphere/viewer experience while I work on the plot and it's not yielding very good results. This is, in fact, an Idea that I just can't get out of my head unto paper. But I'll take O art Oracle's advice and I pray that I'll be able to get my final product from the great wisdom he provides. Jokes aside, I'll keep trying and thanks for inspiring me to look at it at new angles and just swallow my pride so I can throw ideas at the wall. 👍 I'll get there eventually.

Recently, my little break was with the design of the as-yet-unnamed main character from a story I've been calling 'Super Gaffe' for a number of years. The basic idea is it's a superhero comedy of errors with inspiration from shows like 'Power Rangers' and 'Kamen Rider'. For a time, I was really stuck on just how much to have his outfit pull from those old shows. That was right up until I recently pulled him from the project he started in and dropped him into my Biff comics for a bit. Different world, different needs and I found out Real quick which parts of that kid's design work in the realities of an actual project with a looming deadline and not just pin-ups and one-off images. I hit the marks I was looking to hit the few times I've tried to redesign them in the past. Now, I have a better idea as to how to shift things around and still keep the character looking familiar if/when I ever get back to that other project. = )

I have been through this as well but not with the characters , it was the story. What ended up fixing this problem was changing my main character (a teenage magical girl) to the opposite of what they were (a mid 20s man). The story is so much better now and makes more sense.

Welcome back! Really enjoyed this video, especially the way Budvae transitioned from caterpillar to sea-land-horse, that was really clever and the end design is adorable. Don't have any art ideas stuck, but oh-so-many story ideas, and recently I was able to pin one down as a university project. Perhaps not the most practical, do-it-at-home solution, but it helped, and since then I've been able to develop the idea beyond its original limits.

I have a Lot of these "designworms" I haven't worked on because I'm dry with ideas right now. I have a character who controls gases and winds, but they still have a very prevalent "vortex" shirt because initially, one of their main techniques was creating vacuums. Buuut it's an old, unchanged design feature that doesn't reflect them as much nowadays. In general, their whole design could be reworked to better fit the themes and I think the same goes with Many of my designs. But in the back of my mind I still have that fear you talked about: everyone who I've shown them to has said they're one of my best, so I'm afraid of changing what Might've made them work originally. Lightning in a bottle, as they say... maybe. I've never really tried iterative drawing, though, so I might pick that up sometime in the future. Very good advice, though.

I've also been stuck in development with my idea. Since 2015 I was convinced I wanted it to be an animated series. I tried making it into a game, then a comic, then another different game. I'm finally back to the animated series idea, using my skills I've been honing all these years to adjust certain things and perfect characters along the way. It wasn't a wasted time when I consider all my growth from it, as long as the series can get done

idk if this falls into the same category but one thing I love to do is the "draw this again" meme from my older (once beloved) art. it helps me to be confronted with things that don't /quite/ work and figuring out on the fly how to improve because if push comes to shove, you still have the old version if you don't like the new one. it's weirdly liberating since it's my own art (opposed to the dtiys). I always come down with a better version, most changes happen unconsciously anyway because they just became your blood and bone from practice etc.

One idea that stuck with me was using “Phantom Fox” as a superhero name. I initially pinned it to a marvel OC who can teleport (she gets her powers from AIM and is kind of an assassin for them until she escapes them, so leaving her free to interact with whatever Marvel characters I want), but the name stuck with me even when the character herself didn’t. Months later I got into DC media, specifically the Batman Family, and I wanted a general OC to interact with DC characters in my imagination, but I just kept coming back to Phantom Fox. To fit DC’s universe’s tone, I didn’t just copy over my Marvel OC and took the name Phantom Fox as prompt words, coming up with a wholly different character concept; Vulpecula, a fox-themed witch thief with a fairy mother and human father, a magical fox mask that allows her to see the dead, and the ability to magically charm people into doing what she wants. This character really got my creative juices flowing, I’ve written about and drawn her so much compared to Phantom Fox, and she wouldn’t have existed without that first Marvel OC.

Thanks for sharing this one, Brookes. Since you asked, I was always concerned I'd lose something in the iteration process when I was younger. I got attached to ideas, and as I worked and reworked them, they lost so much of their luster. Then, in time, I stopped exclusively working on paper, and found my way into working with sculpture, toys, and puppetry. Now, I know that drawing is just a small part of the process, and that the end result is allowed to stray from the sketches. In fact, this process not only helps me nail the look of the character, but it helps to inform their personality, and sometimes even a voice for them as well.

One character design series I started back in early 2020 was what I call “elementals” (basically drawing every element of the periodic table personified) though I abandoned it at around 22 elements as COVID was had hit the world big time and I was adjusting to online learning. I decided to revisit it a few weeks ago and decided to start over as I found some of the designs very basic and boring. This time however instead of going of some basic research I dug more into the elements and trying to have a more connecting feature between different groups (such as giving all the transition metals spiked shoulders and more metallic looking skin). I haven’t gotten as far as I did last time (only around 13) but I enjoy these designs way more so far. On a side note I searched up the periodic table to make this comment (I’ve been using a paper one as reference to know which one to work on next) and since when have all the unknown elements been named?

From start to finish, this video was a masterpiece!! I can relate to this so much! I wrote a horrible first draft of a novel, and for the life of me, I couldn't get "the creature" to come to life in the story (metaphorically speaking.) I have these two character I've come up with like two years ago, and since then I've been meaning to redesign them cuz I feel they're somewhat weak (and I almost didn't iterate them at all), but I'm always a bit afraid to do it and end up losing what made me like them in the first place. Keeping the elements I may take off to possibly use in another design is a really good thing to keep in mind, maybe with that I won't feel so bad about "losing" this elements I like.

I spent a *significant* amount of time during college putting together a cast of 33 elves plus 230 years' worth of who-begat-whom, for a project initially sort of a fanfic for ElfQuest, and later my own clone-of-ElfQuest comic, and later on moving into a different sort of fantasy, but it was always that initial set of characters. Then I finally admitted that no matter how colorful most of the characters were, my main character was incredibly boring and without anything in the way of characterization, let alone enough to carry the plot. And that I was invested in a number of characters who were already "dead" by the timeline I'd established -- the parents, grandparents, great-grandparents and so on of my "main" characters. So I started considering, for each family, which was the most interesting stretch of time across the history of that family. And I realized that I'd written several families as the decades or even the generations past the point that was truly interesting. They could tell stories of the cool stuff, but their own lives in the "now" weren't particularly interesting by comparison. E.g. a set of four troublemakers -- two sets of siblings who would eventually pair-bond as a close-knit foursome -- were far more interesting back when they were getting up to trouble than when they'd finally settled down with kids, let alone when they had recently died and the kids were soldiering on together. So I sat down and tried to reform the cast in such a way that all of the most interesting characters got to be in the "now" instead of in the past. And it made for some interesting shifts as to who was related to whom (e.g. these guys need an uncle figure, here's a stray uncle figure no longer connected to his niephlings, let's hook them up) and what sort of compare-and-contrasts were playing out across the group. Furthermore, I switched from a single isolated tribe (the start of ElfQuest) to a set of interconnected tribes, which gave some more interesting flavor, and pulled in some aspects from other stories I'd written a while back (including some key characters I'd never found a good "home" for). The plot shifted, the setting shifted, the urgency shifted, even their physical nature shifted -- all changes that made them much more interesting, because I'd finally been willing to let go of the structure I'd built up for so long it had become a mantra. I might never bring the story to life, but it's still one of my favorite endeavors, and one I learned the most from attempting.
@Arkylie
@Arkylie 2 жыл бұрын
Another project that took a massive turn once I let go of my initial plans: I'd put over a decade into planning out a story, but the cast had never really gotten detailed enough to be interesting. But then the "The Last Airbender" movie came around, and I ended up reading a ton of articles on the problems of whitewashing, and at some point I asked myself "If 'generic white guy' is the Hollywood default, what's the complete opposite of that?" In short order, I had a cast with a number of very interesting characters, well fleshed out, with a variety of cultural backgrounds and also a variety of disabilities. Eventually, I expect to put time into a major research phase, trying to avoid offensive stereotypes and distinctly inaccurate portrayals, but just getting over the hump to *having* a cast (beyond the "these are the main three and I guess they have some neighbors and coworkers and such" that I had before) was a huge step for me. Hope someday I'll bring this piece to fruition!

I can definitely relate to this- what helps break out characters with their story and designs is how they connect with me as a person! Before when I just started working on my passion project I thought it was all good and everything was fine, but the more I thought about some designs and plot points I realized that it was just.. so out of place?? Though at this point I kinda change too frequently instead of keeping it the same for a time. An example of that is how my character designs keep changing so it’s not as consistent, I’m not sure if you’d like to cover a topic like that but I’d be interested to hear what you think about constant changes of designs and story beats especially with how consistent your designs are :D

This video is so relatable. I can’t stop thinking about wanting to make a Paw Patrol/Thunderbirds crossover film fairly early in my planned career. I have the entire story, everyone’s character arcs, all the action scenes and rescues, the voice cast, and how I’m going to direct the film all mapped out in my head. But I’m having concerns that it may be a little too dark and intense on the action to appeal to the Paw Patrol target audience, and that Thunderbirds fans will take one look at the trailer and avoid it like the plague. What do you fellow commenters think?
@CharacterDesignForge
@CharacterDesignForge 2 жыл бұрын
Two things I will say, for one fan-work like one using two existing franchises may sometimes not be ideal, and using them as a point of inspiration to jump off from might yield you more results- The other is that is sounds like a lot of characters for one of your first films! As tempting as it is, starting small is the best way for something to actually get finished! I'm already a few projects deep in my life, for myself and for others, and Stormfellers with it's relatively small cast and scale is still a HUGE undertaking for me on my own- be nice to yourself and start with a scale you can manage!

@@CharacterDesignForge Well thanks for the advice. However, I should clarify that it’s not actually that near to first in line on my list of planned films and tv shows. When I said that I wanted to do it fairly early in my career, I meant before I produce any major big budget Hollywood productions. Before I make Paw Patrol International Rescue, I’d like to make a TV series, a $10 million or less budget film, a medium budget film adaptation finale to my TV series, and one or two more medium budget films. So I’ll have plenty of experience behind me by the time I get to my crossover film. After that, I feel I’ll be ready to move on to directing Hollywood blockbusters. Plus, I’ve already started small with Redcliff Railway Tales, and working at my local cinema.

This makes me wonder if artists should have a garden of many ideas all at different stages of growth, and they only "harvest" one to sell once they feel like it has fully ripened. The drawback might be that if the garden gets too big, the artist won't be able to give some ideas any attention and they will be lost.

Bugfaye (sic?) Looks hecka neat! Also, im looking forward to seeing what the story with the water creature is! In terms of ideas i havent been able to get out of my head: i have a half formed idea for a longform dramatic story about supervillains who want to take over the world (and the story would be largely from their perspective) that ive been thinking about a ton for *years* but its a little too ambitious for me to chew a piece out of at the moment--right now i think my time is better spent chasing the smaller ideas i get excited about, haha. Maybe someday, though!

The amount of times I had this issue with Minecraft Redstone was annoyingly high definitely taking this to word (This also is why I have a Book & Quill in my Survival Worlds that is more valuable than Netherite)

Oh my gosh... I have a couple of old race designs (in my head LOL I cannot draw) from YEARS ago that I low-key come back to every so often... This might be the sign I need to... somehow integrate them into my worldbuild I made within the last couple years... One is probably gonna get shelved since I cannot see it returning 😅

For me I been spending a lot of time with the martial arts world concept building the world creating a grounded history by reworking real history like the Chicago dojo wars and blackployatiom era films to shape this martial arts obsession world

This reminds me how I'd been strugglng with an OC and why I hated her. She was boring and I was struggling to use her for the story she is supposed to be in...eventually I had to not only give her a new look but quite literally give her a new backstory and new way in how she reaches the point in the story that I actually kept the same.

How experienced should someone be to make money out of their art? 5 years? 10 years? 20 years? I have 11 years of experience and I'm wondering if I should start since my mom has been getting low on money. Also if so, what would you recommend to sell the art? Sorry for the multiple questions. ❤

ive found that most of my best designs are from experiments, so whenever im struggling to make a design work i just try as many different things as possible with it until i find versions that i like more. i kind of enjoy just messing around and contorting a design i already like just to see how far i can push things, cause i often run into unexpected ideas that i wind up liking
