If you used a charcoal sanding pad instread; you could sharpen over a bowl or cup & catch the charcoal dust; and then use the charcoal dust as a soft blending medium, applied with a brush. No waste that way. You can also just rotate the charcoal stick with each drawn stroke and get a point that way too.

No being nosy here. When I blew off charcoal dust in my drawing session, the studio manager jumped at me, saying the dust is very harmful to the lungs and it cannot be rid of once taken inside. She is more nervous about her life than mine! After the heat chilled, I figured that she has a point. Compressed charcoal is made of chemical binders. To a certain extent, they are not healthy to keep in our lungs. So, I resolved to using gum eraser that will mop up the dust in bits of rubber debris. They will not float in the air for sure. I have seen other artists (one or two) will blow off Conte dust with zest. It is almost like a fad similar to blowing cigarette smoke. The exaggerated gesture is out of need or habit [that might trigger certain emotional release or what]! This manager will freak out even more about pastel dust. I guess I have said enough - only thought I want to share some insight. Thank you for sharing this video. Agreed that art supplies cost arms and legs nowadays.

Shammy or chamois? Nitram is Martin backward. Martin Gros was the father of the charcoal manufacturer I would pronounce it NITT-ram. You can sharpen your charcoal, if necessary, on small grit sandpaper over a shallow can and save the shavings which can be used like pan pastels... applied with a fine : SOFFT sponge applicator. Also, you might try mixing Liquitex brand clear gesso with a bit of water. Then add to that some powdered charcoal to make liquid charcoal that can be applied with a brush. This works with powdered graphite, too.

I know this might sound like too much work, but what about making your own charcoal sticks out of willow tree branches? I am in the process of making my own. I will let you know next week if i succeed.

Interesting fact: Nitram is the name spelled backward of who owns this brand (Martin) So I really do think it is pronounced Ne-eye-Trum but more like Knee-Trum. I found that the Nitrum in the blue pack is very hard where it tears up the paper unless its sanded paper or watercolor 140lb paper

how do you blend the charcoal lines? what do you use? fingers?
@JenniferMariePainting8 жыл бұрын
I have a few different ways to blend the charcoal lines. One way is to make the charcoal lines so close together that when you step back they optically blend together. My other favorite method is to use a stiff fan brush and very lightly brush the top of the paper; this lets you still see the individual lines but softens them and unifies them. I also will use a dirty kneaded eraser and lightly rub it on the paper, this gives a different effect of unifying. In small areas I will use a tortillons, I use them to pull out small shapes in the charcoal, never to blur entire areas or things get messy. And lastly I try to not to use my fingers because the oil from fingers can ruin your paper, but if i do I will first rub my finger on my pants to get off any excess oil. Thanks for watching my video :)

What grit of sandpaper and what type of paper do you use? :)
@JenniferMariePainting7 жыл бұрын
The one I was sharpening on the video is a really rough sandpaper (I don't know the grit). I also have sandpaper stapled to a piece of cardboard and this is a much smoother sandpaper that I use to resharpen the charcoal. I use Carta Firenze paper when I am doing a longer drawing that uses really dark values. When i am doing a quicker drawing that will use only lighter values I use Canson paper.

These are not 'secret tools' these are every day methods used all the time by anyone who draws and there are endless ways to achieve all sorts of effects in drawing. Dont try to make out you know something 'secret' just to get people to watch your video.
