Does anyone think that she got the virus at the end? The idea that she’s hell-bent and almost “zombie like “when she gets to the main road in Chicago and once the car stops she’s hell-bent on just walking and walking and walking?

I read this book in December after I was laid off from my job! I really liked Candace as a character and really liked the running motif through the book of memory and her dealings with her mom/Alzheimer's/her heritage and the virus. I did find the story line with the band of survivors to be jarringly different from her descriptions of pre-pandemic life and what was happening while the world was crumbling around her, but I also felt like that marked how incredibly different her life was before and after.

I am really glad I didn't read this through our pandemic. It's a great book, with several topics. Work, family, romantic relationships and just existing in a big city.

I can identify with this so much! I also keep saying that I have nothing to complain and I’m in a great situation (living together, ability to work from home, still a job etc). But in the meantime I’m literally locked up in my home office, not seeing anyone else and not being able to do all the things I love. Interesting review! Very curious for this book now

Candance made me feel so angry! 😡 Like, Get it together Candance! Do something!! But it made me felt that way because I believe I’m a little bit like her. Hahaha I’m also suffering from an existential crisis thanks to this book. There was this line in the book about being ok for a job doesn’t mean you should do it, but at tbe same time, she stayed at the job. God damn it, Candance! Life is meaningless I guess. On the other hand, I actually like the cult part and I believe We didn’t have much information about it because that’s the way Candance approaches life. Nothing is a big deal for her.

I loved this book, particularly how crazy accurate and terrifying it was. If you want more pandemic fiction, Station Eleven. I will live and die by this book, I absolutely love it.
