My OCD was pinging like crazy with every mention of the "J1-1772"
@winkcla3 жыл бұрын
I can't find it in the Amazon description but hopefully the 60amp adapter uses the J1772 signaling protocol and a bit of logic to announce the max amperage of either the station or itself, whichever is lowest, similarly to how type 2 cables do in Europe (though technically, the type 2 cables announce their max amperage to the charger and not the car, which probably isn't possible on already tethered cables). It would be incredibly dangerous otherwise. If it does the signaling properly, then 80amps chargers could be used safely, they will just appear as 60amp chargers to the car when the adapter is used.

Hey Brian, when I put in my Tesla wall charger I went to Home Depot and got a 14-50 stove plug and connected it to the wall charger instead of hardwiring the wall charger. Then had the electrician put in a 14-50 outlet. If you go this route then you could always use the Audi (or any other) charger if something happened to the Tesla one.

I have the 40 amp version for Chevy Volt to use Tesla and it works great. Product is worth the money! Very well made. Tip: if you have a problem charging with adapter, plug adapter in first give it 30 seconds and then plug it into the car. FYI that adapter will never work on a supercharger because on CCS the bottom two connectors are what carry the DC current to charge battery (the top J1772 part is just for signaling)

Great video but I'd like to highlight a thing. The adapter you're showing will never work on Superchargers because they supply DC power and the J1772 is just for AC power. To use the superchargers you will need an adaptor Tesla->CCS. Keep up the good work!
@i1Tesla3 жыл бұрын
I know. That is why I said Tesla will need to make an adaptor and sell it for a lot of money.
@morriec98683 жыл бұрын
Maybe not an idea to mention not yet, or put the above in the video. Some idiot will try it and if power flows (I realise this is practically nill chance of this, even under SuperCharger fault conditions) 500A through something designed for 80A will likely cause a fire!
@mr.zeettt67823 жыл бұрын
Just additional information. In Europe, V3 Superchargers are with CCS only, V2 have two cables, modified Tesla Type 2 and CCS. For Model S/X owners, you can buy an Adapter and use CCS Charging Stations. So it is possible.

@clantigua13 жыл бұрын
Remember when you supercharge you go on DC bypassing the inverter directly to the battery, so you will need a different adaptor because in CCS1 protocol you charge DC on the bottom part of the connector and use the top part of the CCS1 connector for communication and grounding.

Definitely looking for follow-up info on the TeslaTap adaptor. Being able to use my current Tesla wall charger and the possibility of the multitude of destination chargers for a potential non-Tesla future purchase as well definitely seems appealing. The EA wall chargers are capped at 40A and more expensive than my current Tesla option. The ChargePoint has a higher ceiling supporting 40A and 50A circuits but also comes at a much higher price point too being $699 MSRP.

So much for i1__TESLA__ ;) (Lighted thing on your wall, not the rebranding of the KZbin profile and your shirt). I prefer the Tesla one that is opposite, that is 1/3rd the price (if no longer had the one that comes with the car/need a second), and has a much better lock than the size and hence security that seems likely possible to fit in this adaptor ;) I think I have an issue with using a hotel/etc Tesla Destination for other EVs. Not there isn't a good possibility with the number of Tesla's on the road that you will not have use of a hotel Tesla Destination charger, but using this adaptor to use these will increase this possibility.

Why do u have Type 1 over there 😁 ? Your electrical system is 110VAC 1 phase? Therefore the high current? We in Europe/Sweden have 3x230VAC and therefore have Type 2? But at home with AC charging, what's the max kW the cars E-tron/MY allows?

@awo1fman3 жыл бұрын
That will NOT work with a SuperCharger, ever. You'll need a female Tesla to male CCS1 adapter for that. J1772 is strictly for AC charging, not DC. I'm not going to go into all the technical details, but DC requires much larger conductors to carry the same amount of power as AC. That's why the CCS connector has those two huge pins. The Tesla connector also has two pins that are much larger than any of the J1772 pins. The Mennekes Type 2 connector Tesla uses elsewhere in the world has larger pins than the J1772, but also more of them, and Tesla combines those in a nonstandard way to do supercharging.

Brian, it's not a charger! It's a EVSE - Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment. We need guys like you that want to inform the public to use the correct terms. Also, EVSE is faster to say! If people do not know what a EVSE is they can Google it and find out. This also makes them aware that the charger is part of the car. So someone having a 3.6 kw charger would know that buying a 9.6 kw EVSE would not allow the car to charge any faster.

There's no way this adapter will work with (Urban) Superchargers. Non-Tesla EVs don't have the necessary contactors and related circuitry to "redirect" the AC input to the DC input like Tesla has. A Tesla to Audi adapter would definitely have to use the two DC pins of the CCS1 plug.
