How To Be The Life Of ANY Party - feat. Jim Carrey
If you want to be the life of the party, there are really only two things you need to do
First, you need to be able to captivate people who you might not know
And second, you need to be able to make people with senses of humor laugh
The problem is you might not know how to captivate strangers or make people with different senses of humor laugh. Wit might get some people but be lost on others. Amazing storytelling can hook a group, but it can be hard to get people to listen in the first place.
So in this video, I want to cover 6 easy ways to become the life of the party and make people with lots of different senses of humor laugh. These are things ANYONE can do, you don’t have to be a comedic genius
To illustrate these principles, we’ll be looking at Jim Carrey, because his style lends itself to learning quickly. We'll learn to:
1) Create a character
2) Use specificity
3) Commit
4) Use surprise
5) Find the funny philosophy

I've always been friends with many groups at once, it's kind of strange, most people in highschool would just hang out with one group at lunch 5-10 people or so, but I would usually do like 2-3 groups every day and alternate beetween like 6 groups. 1: party dudes/ drug dealers etc 2: jocks 3: nerds 4: preppy kids 5: ghetto dudes 6: more nerds, instead of the video game kind more like the study kind, aka my study group.

The most important thing if you wanna be "the life of the party" is to enjoy the party as much as you can. The second most important thing is to share as much as you can your joy with the rest of the party. If this two things don't happen, the rest is unnatural crap. Of course, this applies to life because life is a huge party.

That is seriously so good, and I realize after all this time that I spent on trying to improve myself that what we, as learners try to just learn as concrete steps to achieve a goal is actually not so effective. So when I want to get a result x , I'll should do step y is flawed not because it may not get you the results, but because it misses the point of having done something like that entirely. So when I was trying to 'learn' how to be funny, and trust me, that was what I searched the first day I came back from a new high school, somebody should've told me to pursue the why, and not the how. So thanks for this comment man, it really reminded me of such an important fact . BTW the 'why' I derived from Simon Sinek's - Start with Why, you could check that out. Happy new yeaaaaaar :)

Be the life of the party: 1) Play a character. This allows you to enhance any story, even if it's not that interesting. It can also be a safe background for sarcasm, because people know you're not hurting them. 2) Specificity: details, comparisons, characters, etc. 3) Continue the joke, drag it > drop it. Commit to your humor. Don't hesitate, involve your whole body and take your jokes to the next level. 4) Surprise: purposefully misinterpret other people, or do something dumb unexpectedly. Or put on a serious face to enhance the unexpected 5) Admit you want acceptance and ask yourself acceptance from whom. Look for people who care about you, make them laugh, make them happy and joyful!

I like how you make people think they're just gonna learn how to be funny, charismatic, fun or whatever, but you always end up teaching them how to be better people. Because at the end of the day that's what makes you a desirable person - being good and kind, no tricks required.

Telling people to stay committed to the joke is dangerous advice to give. There are lots of jerks out there who are not funny and don't know when to stop. A bad joke can be tolerated for a short while but if one insists than it quickly becomes an annoyance or worse.

I've always used "The Confused Response" reply. And everyone loves it. Like when Carrey said, "Oh, we walk in, we sit in the theater, etc"... People love it, every single time I do that. But, I never do it too much. Just once in a blue moon. If you do that too much, you'll come off as trying too hard, and not natural. People I really know, like family and friends, totally get my humor, I thought I invented that. They crack up every time. I've been doing that since I was like 10 and although it seems corny, it comes totally natural, and I get a genuine laugh every time. I went to a 3-Day Charisma Arts seminar in NYC for a thousand bucks like 10 years ago (luckily my friend paid, I didn't even want to go, but he wears hearing-aids, and needed someone to explain what was happening after each session at our hotel), so anyway, at the end of the first day, we all had to go out to a club, and then the next day report on how it went, positive/negative, etc, and learn from each other. So, we could improve on our mistakes and learn from others. Probably a great idea for the comment section on a channel like this.

I don't really rely on stories or being "ON" ... But when I'm in social butterfly mode (i'm pretty extroverted) I just kinda work the room and keep convo light and up beat. I am genuninly curious about other people and not afraid to make fun of myself. Being quirky and telling jokes comes naturally, but I also don't force them. I don't have too many inhibitions especially when drinking. So i am not afraid to sing/dance or be silly. BUT only if I want to. You don't need to perform for validation. I think people tend to gravitate towards me because I don't really care. Look you are never truly free until you stop caring what people think. Just go ahead and put yourself out there! By doing so people will like you and think you're super fun. My fav part of this video is surprising people. Cool video!

Thanks Charlie---and you're exactly right about dedication to the character. I tend to lose assurance in my ability to act outside my own self-schema. I think another tidbit to be derived from Jim's behavior & knack in being the "LOTP" ; is that he remains engaged minutely (entrancing the host or other person of power, standardly) and easily tuning-out that environment.

I'd absolutely love to see your breakdown of Muhammad Ali, his interviews have been some of the most captivating I've watched and from the people that have met him, they all say he had some charisma and aura about him. Loving this channel btw!!

All of the Jim Carrey clips had me chortling. I'd like to see a video on how to deal with a group situation in which another party is overly boisterous or just really chatty and you don't know how to get a word in edgewise.

This isn't the best video but I'm thinking of the Graham Norton Show episode with Michael Fassbender, Sarah Silverman, and a drunk Mark Wahlberg.

I was watching for the golden nugget, and as I was watching I was like "nope that's not it... that's not it... that's not it," but then it came. We've all heard things like this before, thousands of times, but we always need reminders. Thanks mate!

I liked that part about 'conviction' (around 5 mins.). Made me reflect on recent mistakes i may have made. Reminds me of the same epiphany i had after reading a quote in one of Robert Greene's books, which stuck forever; "Going Half way with Half a Heart, digs the Deeper Grave." Thanx for sharing your valuable content! :D
