James Corden - How To Be Nice Without Being A Pushover
Discover The 4 Emotions You Need To Make a Killer First Impression:

Push Pull In Flirting: • The One Flirting Techn...
Self Deprecating Humor: • Playlist
James Corden has the fastest growing Late Night channel on KZbin thanks mostly to the massive success he has had with Carpool Karaoke on the Late Late Show.
And while it is certainly fun to watch your favorite singers rock out to their most popular songs, a big contributor to the success of those videos is the dynamic James is able to create in such a short time. He’s able to get people to open up and really enjoy themselves. And if you watch closely, there is a moment where these stars who were previously bored or skeptical, seem to really begin to like James Corden. James Corden’s magnetism comes from the fact that he is able to make people feel good, without losing their respect. That is what we are going to learn how to do in this video.
01:44 Make your compliments more specific and direct
02:06 Push-pull compliment to avoid the vibe of butt-kissing
02:54 If tension arises when complimenting, follow up with a joke
06:01 For certain groups, don't get walked over by dishing it back out
07:55 Set boundaries at times too like what James Corden did here

Make your compliments really specific? Okay. "Your left eyelid is looking great today!"
@akileaf4029
@akileaf4029 5 жыл бұрын
Christine S On that point you might have to add that compliments about a hair style, outfit, occupation, archievements etc are really good compliments that usually work out in your favour. But compliments about things that people are born with and can’t change about themselves, like eyelids or generally a body type or something, can come across really creepy or annoying. So, it’s safer to stick to compliment topics that people choose to represent themselves with.

@@PanzerVII-df8hg I don't think it's just that he's overweight. I think the fact that he seems genuinely comfortable with who he is. Even good-looking people can come off needy and insecure, but James Corden does seem genuinely at ease with himself and enthusiastic about life, which people find very endearing. I do think the fact that he is overweight amplifies that because it is so rare to find big people who feel that way about themselves with the messages they're always getting from the rest of us. People who really like themselves and radiate joy are rare enough. Big people like that are even rarer.

I don't think being genuine is all that important. If you're talking to a stranger or anyone for that matter and you compliment them it immediately makes the person realize you have respect for them and they will put their guard down. A person with their guard down that has respect for you is 10 times easier to speak to than a person that is trying to figure you out. Compliment somebody on anyting and you will be better off. Delivery matters in those cases too. If you're self depricating and its a subject that could be concerning for those around you if context is unclear, make sure to sell it with a smile or exaggerated gesturing so those around you know that its a joke and that you don't actually FEEL bad about it. If that part is unclear, it may seem like you're crying for help or airing some personal problems, which for sure is important when the setting is right, but not when a group is trying to have fun.

I hate myself for fearing conflict and for taking the effort of pleasing everyone. I can't help being nice,it's natural for me to do so. Until one of my friends pointed out that I'm being fake. It hurt because I just want to live my life, happy and spreading kindness. @maxkho00
@maxkho00 4 жыл бұрын
@@matemoonka Most of the time you just need to understand the other person's point of view and talk a little bit from that point of view, especially commenting on your own actions and, given the other person's pov, how these actions make you feel, perhaps exaggerating a little. A useful template is "If I were you and someone did that to me, I would've [describe how you would react and how that reaction is similar or worse than the reaction of the person you are apologising to]" Adding details specific to - especially thought processes emerging from - that pov is very convincing, as it proves that you genuinely understand it. Distancing your current self from your former self which did the thing that you are apologising for - especially using hyperbolic vocabulary - is also effective. Once you've convinced them that you have taken and understood their pov, all you need to do is simply say that you won't do that again since the you now understand their pov, while you didn't before. Lastly, never excuse yourself and brush away any hint of a potential excuse by further admitting that you were by all means in the wrong or by insulting your former self. The key component is, of course, being genuine - or, if not that, find as many things that you are genuine about and concentrate on them - the rest should flow naturally. Here is an example: say, I played a prank on someone and it turned out to be unnecessarily mean. Here is what I would say to them: "Look, I have NO IDEA (hyperbolic vocabulary) what THE HELL (hyperbolic vocabulary) I was thinking when I played that prank (distancing from former self), but, if someone did that to me, I'd punch that guy to DEATH (hyperbolic vocabulary) without hesitation (assuming the person's pov). I literally went ahead and ruined your day for no reason (thought emerging from pov). Imagine thinking taking someone's phone and running away is funny, wow, what a douche I was (thought emerging from pov + distancing yourself from firmer self). Look, I know that you probably don't want to talk to me right now (thought emerging from pov), and you HELLA (hyperbolic vocabulary) shouldn't after what I did to you (embracing the pov) - hell, I don't even know how you resist from punching me atm (embracing + exaggerating pov) - but, for what it's worth, just know that I won't THINK to do this EVER again and still can't believe I EVER did that (explain that you won't do this again). I didn't think about how my actions would affect you - because I was a douche, of course (brushing away hint of excuse) - but now that I know (explaining how you are different from before) - and should've known - I won't even think about doing something like this ever again (always useful to reiterate that you won't do this again). Once again, I'm sorry (don't forget to say sorry!). Have a good day."

Haven't watched the video yet so I don't know if you go over this but I need to vent because I've been thinking and that's never good. No one has to read this. I've gotten a reputation as a 'good girl' a 'nice girl' and this has led to me being a pushover. I can't stand up for myself. And when I finally get the courage to say what's actually on my mind, people attack me. I have friends who can be as rude as they want and they still have tons of people who want to be around them. They're never positive, they're super judgmental, they refuse to help with anything and just don't care. Yet, people want to be around them. I try to be nice. I try to stay positive. I help whenever I can. And if I see someone in need of help I try to help. So why am I the one who gets used? Why I am the one who is the butt of everyone's joke? I don't want to stand up for myself because that's never ended well. I know I should. I know. But I just can't. I don't want to be alone. I don't want to lose my friends. It's already happened the last time I tried to stand up and called confront the people who hurt me. I don't want it to happen again.

Don't take this the wrong way but, you may be nice but you are spineless. You have every reason to treat yourself well and expect others to do so if they are counted as your friends. My advice: Drop them. You do not need people in your life who are mean and rude. Make friends with people who appreciate that you dislike conflict and know how to be civil. If you care more about not being alone, you will always be this way and never change. You need to surround yourself with people who can help you boost your self-esteem by treating you well at the very least. Don't be a victim. You do not need to live like this. Because before you know it, this will be your life when you are in your 40s and you will be miserable.

How old are you? These kinds of things change a little depending on your age. The advise I am going to give you is the following: Standing up for yourself is a NEED in your life, this way you draw lines with people and they learn when something is too much. Even more important is that you understand that you are special and you have worth, that you are loved. By defending yourself you are not only protecting you, but also your worth and the love other people have for you I can tell you are a great person, and find many things in common between you and me, and let me tell you: you are halfway into becoming an even more amazing person, someone who loves, is loved and genuinely cares for other people, someone who is also strong willed and has big ideals she thinks are worth protecting. Because you ARE these things. Or at least thats the feeling I get. If you want to talk, vent up and maybe recieve some specific advice, send me an inbox and we can talk, i will listen.

can you non-chalantly go to a restaurant and order something or listen closely to people while they talk? if you can do these things, you do have social skills! these interactions are like building blocks that you can use to develop your social skills further. as with most things in life, success doesn't come easily so you need to get yourself out of your comfort zone and keep trying what works for you. take it as a form of experimentation that can have lots of outcomes. don't worry if you make mistakes; that's part of the learning process after all!

Im gonna take notes on this video haha. One of my major struggles. I'm glad you covered how to respond when someone teases you. Sometimes I have a quick retort (usually leans towards the mean side. I don't realise how mean it sounds til others comment on it, because me and my friends usually tease each other more strongly than other people would). Other times I fumble. Sometimes depending on the person I go into my fake crybaby kid mode "You're not my friend anymore!/I don't wanna play with you again!" just to brush it off in a cutesy way (which works cause I have a great baby face/voice lol). Then we'll just laugh it off. I find this one girl at work who's always able to spin any joke at her expense into an even funnier joke and I just respect her so much for it. I really want to learn how to make fun of myself but as you pointed out it's hard to make self-depreciating jokes when you're already insecure. I think it's also harder to practice this the larger the group gets. But thank you so much for the tips and your great analysis!

The genuine compliment is a BIG deal in this world. I always tell kids look for the true and unique compliment - don't dare fake it. Make it a practice to spot the good in people. Every person has unique talents. Not only does it make that person more confident but it also makes them see they are valued enough for you to actually pay attention. They are not invisible in this world. When they know and trust that you are being honest, then you can reach a whole new level of cooperation on a team... and in life. As a leader, you will be better able to find the right role for the right person. And people want to live up to your admiration as well as a matter of pride. This is true for all types of people - children and adults alike - even people that others may consider difficult to get along with. Added (tremendous) bonus? It actually gives YOU a better, more positive outlook on life because you are training yourself to see the beauty in people and in the world around you. That is infectious! The more you practice the more you are able to spot these things naturally. And it comes back to you as well: in loyalty, dedication, team spirit, reciprocation of appreciation. Win-win! Try it for a while and see. Again though - can't stress enough: it cannot be fake. Don't be lazy. That undoes all the good you are trying to achieve.

Yeah I used to be at a similar point. Affirmations are basically just nice things you say to yourself on a repeated basis to interrupt negative thought loops. It's all about reframing your thoughts, as your thoughts shape your surroundings. Google it, they can be quite helpful! Plus, you made a great decision to come to this channel. I can only advise you to get heavily into self improvement, get books on it, podcasts, videos, visit websites etc. In the beginning, absorb as much as possible. Stop wasting time on whatever you're wasting it on (for me it was video games - several hours each day and unhelpful youtube videos - also several hours a day) and invest it all to absorb self improvement material. Just listening/reading/watching all this stuff will take you into a different state of mind. Then, when you feel ready, take action. You won't truly change without taking action. But first of all worry about ditching all your unhelpful habits and introducing new, helpful habits into your life. One at a time. Changing your life around takes a massive amount of time and you might feel bad because you feel like you don't change as much as you want to, but if you take small, TINY STEPS EVERY DAY, then you will be a completely different person in a year!

SNOS Death riders Yeah just as Renton said in t2 trainspotting, to get off addiction you need to find another addiction. So try to add small things to your life.
