In this video, we delve into the fascinating theory of Charles Tilly, a renowned political scientist who argued that states are not inherently peaceful and benevolent entities, but rather emerged from war-making and are essentially akin to organized crime. Drawing on Tilly's influential book "Coercion, Capital, and European States," we explore how states throughout history have used violence, intimidation, and exploitation to maintain their power and extract resources from their subjects. From medieval knights and modern armies to tax collectors and bureaucracies, we see how the state's monopoly on legitimate violence has shaped our world and influenced our lives.
This 46-minute video challenges us to reconsider our assumptions about the nature and role of the state in society. Whether you are a student of politics, a curious learner, or a concerned citizen, this video will broaden your perspective and deepen your understanding of the complex and contested phenomenon of the state.
So sit back, relax, and join us on this journey of discovery and reflection. Don't forget to like, comment, and share this video with your friends and followers. Good content. However Nick Lee needs a good microphone. He sounds like he is speaking through a metal culvert.

@@RevolutionandIdeology Nice conversation guys! Do you guys cover synarchy: a shadow government or deep state, a form of government where political power effectively rests with a secret elite? For example Freemason involvement is well documented in both the French & American revolutions? Or in Asia where the White Lotus took part in protests leading the Yuan government to ban the White Lotus. There is also mention of the Jesuit connection to formation of communism. I would be interested in historians talking about these deeper connections, any references?

In an actual conflict in the U.S. these militias would be a lot like the Interahamwe in Rwanda. They would be really good at massacring unarmed civilians, not so good at taking on soldiers who shoot back.

I do not know why this came up on my computer, when i am listening to music on youtube. My computer is hacked and things "controversial" keep popping up for me to watch to keep me on a watchlist. I am a liberal, and democratic, and i am still interested none the less, in hearing other peoples opinions, ideas, and feelings, on subject matters, regardless of content, and i think abstractly about the ideas.

In this era, the only way to expand the state could be said to be thru alliances, treaties, embassies.... But there have been incidents where it's been made clear to the USA specifically that they leave their workers in peril if they get too pushy in their actions within the place their embassy is located. Some have been murdered and taken hostage. So that may have slowed their roll a bit? In my years in Canada, I have never seen a person walk into a store with a rifle on their back. Security or the police would remove them really quickly. And I'm truly glad of that. Hunters and farmers can still have their weapons to shoot animals though. The rest is LARPing though. Cuzz if a tank and helicopter rocked up on their street, they would be the first person taken out as a threat.
