No, we riot if Charles doesn't give his opinion on Adam Neelys' video Music Theory and White Supremacy, a statement made on his video that is misleading and shortsighted and political. No part one. No i will be back. No new series. The SamuraiGuitarist made a comment about how great it would be if comments included time stamps, as if all opposing views were wrong since he was so vague. . you can tell Jeff isn't just running arpeggios, he is playing what he hears. There's a famous quote from jimmy hendrix where he says some times he just sits and listens to the music in his head. Monk is famous for putting in blood and sweat so that when he improvises it looks flawless.
@aquamarine99911
@aquamarine99911 3 жыл бұрын
Hah, the only time Jeff played arpeggios he kinda stumbled over them. Clearly not a chops-y musician, but a legit musician nonetheless for the reasons Charles elucidates here. That's fine - uniqueness is more important than speed. Jimi Hendrix wasn't Al Dimeola, and that spoke well for Jimi. He was one of the best musicians to play what he heard. "Little Wing" is unlike anything else that has ever been written. It's a guitar composition, brimming with emotion.

@@MarkTarmannPianoCheck_it_out Wow, it was the initial comment who brought up Hendrix (and Monk, another legit genius). I just wanted to clarify his point about the arpeggios, and put in my own two cents about Jimi. And I (unlike the first commenter) spelled his name correctly, which is the first sign of respect. There are a lot of divisions in society today. I'm not sure why you're getting your back up and tossing around insults over something like this. If everybody had your online approach, things would be even worse.

I know this is two years old but I have to say this is the best vid I've seen about Jeff's playing because you used Canteloupe Island as the example. I had not see that one before. He just nailed it with his chord voicings and perfect timing, he's really grooving. I find myself listening to his version over and over. I've seen Herbie and other monsters just smoke this tune and of course Jeff isn't trying to compete with that but what he's doing here is really good. And, he knows how to work the crowd as well as anybody. Something you may be able to find, there is an old episode of Law and Order where his detective character is chasing down a murderer who is a wannabe keyboard rockstar who killed a rival. Jeff and his partner goes to the club he's performing at and when the kid takes a break walks up on stage, the kid says "what are you doing?" Jeff ignores him and proceeds to play a great blues riff on the his digital stage setup with that big flashy ending we all like to do on Georgia and he really nailed it. He gets the same amount of applause the kid got and Jeff jumps off the stage, goes over to him and says "And I'm just a cop" just to get into his head a little. Beautiful moment. Jeff's got more chops than he's showing here.

It can be hard to explain when someone isn't necessarily "good" at an instrument in the expected way, but is still talented and has an ear for what sounds good. You did a great job of that here, especially at 11:45 and on. Sometimes there are people who aren't actually, technically skilled at something, but the way they found ability to do it is pleasing to the ear. It's not for everyone, and it won't be featured in any greatest hits, but it has merit. And you can tell they put their all into it. That's what I appreciate about Jeff's performances - this dude just loves Jazz and he's found a way to express that at the piano in a way that's unique to him, that others enjoy beyond the novelty of seeing an actor play music. My entire musical family disagrees with me and I know why, but an example I go back to is Russell Crowe as Javert in Les Misérables. Crowe is not a good singer - no projection, muddied, quiet, tonally narrow. But he's my favorite Javert, because his voice fits the tortured character best, in my mind. Anyway I'm rambling but tl;dr, sometimes being highly skilled at something sounds worse than someone who can only perform at a basic level.

I'm far from a jazz expert and not much of a musician, but it also seems (at least from the clips presented here) like he's very good at using playing dynamics and pushing and dragging time in a way that works really well with both the piece being performed and the rest of the band he's playing it with. It's subtler than flashy technical playing, but it's an important skill in itself and one that takes a lot of effort to learn to do well!

This comment resonates with me. He's not looking away from the band per se. He's turning his ear toward them and focusing on what he is hearing, not seeing. In both clips Charles uses, he's not really looking at the audience or the camera. His eyes are defocused, because his mind is poised towards his connection with the other musicians and what they are all doing together. Emotional, physical, and intimate indeed.

You're the most positive jazz player and reviewer of jazz players I've personally seen on KZbin. They used to say “Miles can’t play like Dizzy” which might have been true when he first started working with Bird but then he showed that when he wanted to play high and fast he could, but it wasn’t his thing. Jeff Goldblum seems to have always been a jazz musician whose daytime gig was being an actor. His music sounds exactly like what we would expect because , in a very untypical way, he we knew his personality before we heard his music when a musician puts pure music and a real emotional style of playing you don’t get a lot of endless 16th notes. Jeff is a jazz pianist expressing himself in a very honest way.

I’m asking myself if Jeff’s solo is really improvised or if it was written before. It’s so perfect, it has a meaning, every note and chord seem to be so right and original at the same time. This is incredibly hard to do out of the moment, even Charles Cornell is obviously not able to improvise such a meaningful solo with abstract though pleasing Melodies. Miles Davis, Herbie Hancock maybe are on such a level of spontaneous creativity. Just a question. If it’s really improvised he is a musical genius.

5:21 Even though my piano-major mom started me plucking on the piano when I was 3, I'm more skilled as a vocalist. This is primarily because, unless I'm singing in a group with set parts, I just match whatever I hear in the harmony parts of a song, & create my own personal part. Even if I'm looking at the 4-part harmony on the page of the hymnal, my own personal part will mirror the alto part for a time, then switch for a few notes to an octave above the tenor or bass parts, thus making it a descant. I’ll change the rhythm slightly, & even pick out notes that are only in the instrumental accompaniment. Thus, it’s very likely that what I sing will change from one verse or chorus to the next, or even between that time & when I sing the song in the future. Generally, the more times I sing something, the less my personal harmony part will change.
