The main reason it’s so difficult to enter the domain is because most companies are clueless! They want someone already ready to do everything from day 1 and are not willing to teach or let them learn. NOBODY can be an expert in all tools and expertise out there, but sometimes the amount of requirement is crazy and makes nonsense. Sometimes asking 5y experience for a product that exist only for 2y! Additionally, lots of HR and recruiters out there know nothing about the technical aspect of the job and just put a bunch of words and credentials together asking candidates to filled everything up. Until they change their mindset, the market will keep suffering and people won’t find more opportunities

I did an online associate's degree while working on my full time job 12hrs ,4-6 days a week. Most stuff given was a lot of reading books chapters instead of practice something and thats why i feel that way. By experience no matter your degree, a job will train you their way, at their pace and on their own system which can be different from what we study or learn.

I want to add in on this. I spoke to an owner of a cyber security company the other night. And I can now tell you second hand, that HR bloats their requirements as a “wish list”. Because they don’t know what they are looking for. They would rather hire a BA with an internship and pay boat loads on training to get them up to speed then someone who can literally just jump in and start doing the work that has first hand experience and certifications but no college degree.

I appreciate the information that is provided in the video as a whole. However, as someone who has a SEC+ cert, has a professional cert through ASU and is working on Google's SEC cert, I have been applying for 6 months with no interviews or even calls... so it's a little irritating to hear the "where to find the jobs" section to quite literally just be "Have you tried a job board?? Use the search bar! Use the filters! You will find one!!!". Like no shit... You might as well have just said "Google it, you bunch of cockwaffles!!". Idk maybe it's just me or my frustration as a whole for the industry right now but I was kind of hoping for something more specific...

It’s true it’s nuanced. There is a lot of need. Sadly business ask for unicorns right now when they really only need horses. The pay doesn’t map well for the asks. Businesses are getting better but still see cyber as a cost center and think it’s just IT. We have a lot of work to continue educating. If a biz suffers a breach that’s when they painfully understand what cyber is and why they need it and then they hire everyone.

I see these entry level posts, however, I can't even get an interview. Any tips on getting passed the AI that are disqualifying my applications before I even get a conversation with anyone? It seems a lot of companies do not understand what "entry level" is... Or maybe I am doing something wrong. Any extra tips? if you're not getting call backs or interviews its likely your resume that is an issue. You've done great stuff but its not translating well in your resume (likely). I have a video on the channel on how to use ChatGPT to customize your resume for any specific job. I'd suggest watching it and then taking action from it. also remember for any resume bullet look at it from the hiring managers eyes and ask 'so what'. ie. try to have impact statements. for example you said you completed a bootcamp. awesome, but that on a resume doesnt do much. hiriing manager may not have heard of that bootcamp so has no weight on if thats amazing or a mill. Now, adding resume bullets about skills you developed, tools you learned, functions you can perform from that bootcamp is much more impactful. Try to think of your resume as the sticker on the windshield of hte car that is you. Your resume is a marketing tool explaining the value you can bring and the capabiliteis you can bear on the org. Do this and your response quality will see improvement. (I cant guarantee obviosuly, but i have high confidence it will improve)

You can teach yourself all this for a small fee of buying books at a bookstore and get the same level of education. The real problem is lack of hands on experiance. A lot of stuff is "paywalled". For ur main question depends on what you want to do but transportation is a US critical infrastructure so you could target that, there is a growth in aviation hacking now too (I believe there is a def con village dedicated to it) so you can explore that, and finally big giants like Boeing have cyber ppl so you could explore that. Also lots of DoD projects w UAV and drones that need securing

Hello Sir, what is the difference between a SOC analyst and a cyber security analyst?
@Agroth2333

Depends on the context but they are nearly one in the same in most cases. Just depends on the sophistication of the cyber security program that you're applying to

I'm currently digging to find the best answer for someone who wants to do Cyber Crime investigation. Seems like an intersection for cybersecurity and law enforcement. How might one tackle that specific goal?

I’m in the same boat. I am going into the academy to join my local police department because they actually have a cybersecurity unit and I was able to talk to them. They only want cops with a cyber background the join that unit. My goal is to join and see where it takes me but not every city is fortunate to have a specific unit like that.

Cyber Security is a mess and a lot of the problems are applied throughout employment in general. Education: Bootcamps advertise to people interested in IT and rack in thousands of dollars, teaching them enough to get an entry-level certification, and then sending them to apply for jobs which usually doesn't end well. Colleges also teach their students topics for thousands of dollars that they can learn online for free or much cheaper. The worst part, it becomes more difficult to attain employment without the help of an education facility. Employers: Setting unrealistic expectations and often practicing elitism, I do notice that people tend to gatekeep and make their positions seem highly complex. Some employers even come up with trivial methods to filter candidates or make hiring decisions. Certification Providers: Creates usually redundant certifications that can go in the thousands of dollars. Even if you go for CompTIA, a certification like the A+ goes in the 400s. Regardless you end up needing to spend money to get a competitive advantage. It also bothers me that even after you got a lot of work and project experience certifications are still required. So, you end up pouring a lot of money into certification providers. Some people even worship certifications rather than viewing them as compliance or job filter bypasses.

I just found you and have subscribed. from this video, I think I am interested in larning skills that could make a GRC Analyst job possible. Is it possible to start as a GRC Analyst, and in time, learn new skills and jump over to gong after SOC Analysist jobs? I imagine so, I just know that some industries (like post production, which I spent 18 years in), once you take on a role you just kind of stay in that. Not that that's bad, just curious to know as I know NOTHING about cybersecurity other than I think I want to get into it, and just need to know how. YOu also mentiond a course you offer that kinda teaches skills and a general road map for getting an entry level job, I'd be very interested in checking that out. I had purchased COMPTIA prep courses on Udemy, but, perhaps there is another way t approach getting in and finding out what aspect interests me the most.

Hey Greg. One cool thing about cyber is you can generally jump from one role to another. There are massive caveats to that statement but an AMA would be required to answer it. I’ve done grc and then had to be a soc analyst and then had to do osint to support the goals of my infosec office. So there’s a lot of overlaps and switching. The main thing about the field is you have to be a lifelong learner cuz things change all the time so you have to be constantly learning and aligned with the industry. I’ve done it for 20 years and love every second. For the classes you can find them here academy.simplycyber.io Also I do a love 1 hour livestream daily threat brief every weekday morning at 8am est which has 450-500 ppl live and it’s awesome. Come join and say hi. Networking is super important to ur career too. Best wishes friend

THANKS SO MUCH! Yah, I am interested in always learning - he state of things now, too, I also look for what may be most stable and it just seems to me like Cyversecutiry may end up a goldmine for personal financial security... I have takenn some classes on Udemy (ethical hacking, and prep courses for COMPTIA), but, I've been so busy with y work I haven' taken those just yet. I TOTALLY want to chck out what you offer too, and really get chipping away at this so that by years end, maybe into 2025, I'd feel pretty comfortable @@SimplyCyber

@SimplyCyber

No. Depends on what you want to do In field but cyber sales is lucrative and has opportunities. Rn there is a contraction in market and less money flowing so there may be fewer cyber sales/marketing but not evaporated. If you want to pivot into a security operations role that’s possible also but will need to get familiar with networking/operating systems and may have to take a pay cut as you will have to start at a lower level
