Amazing to see how his mind works. Screenplay and writing in general are so mysterious and hard to understand yet so fascinating. Great team work with Spike on their first movie, and great career overall.

Bruh this was an hour panel all along I’d seen the clips about Charlie’s walk over and over, come to find it was a snippet of this full panel. Thank god this was finally posted in full.

His opening story “getting in your way is the way” PUT THAT ON A TSHIRT, Sir. From the chaos and the conflict comes art.

1.Getting lost is a good thing 2.create your way and don't worry about it . 3.intimacy and isolation in relationships 4.Joel's version of Celmintine , which it was not the real Celimintine. 5.Women in his psyche is the most powerful thing, without their approval . Women's opinion is important to me . they have alot of power in his movies. 6.actors reveal the script or how the movie should look like . 7.if you are expressing what you are expressing then is not a lie . it exists. the end result is not of a persuing a truth but rather pursing what you feel . 8.everything he ever does or wrote is from some form of him or some state . like he writes alot from his struggles, where he is at the moment because its a true place. the moment you go with it is much important than perspective like don't contemplate the moment later but write about it .

She doesn’t seem to understand his work. John Cusack’s character isn’t in love with Catherine Keener’s character, he’s just a louse who met a woman he fancies and then lies to his partner about it. He would drop Cameron Diaz in a heartbeat. Or at least cheat on her. It’s not love, it’s pure shallow infatuation. And his obsession about his work is equally self-absorbed and lacking in self-awareness… performing his play about an inappropriate 11th century love affair on the street is funny.

You did have some preparations :) it's like you're making up a story since you're a storyteller not because you wouldn't want to trick people. I get that.

I appreciate his attempt at sharing a through-line with a relevant story regarding how he flows through his screenwriting process in the first 20 minutes, but could he have not actually reviewed his notes prior to speaking or made an effort to convey it clearly? Most of the time I sat here waiting for him to finish a sentence. Brilliant storyteller, not a great public speaker.

The thing we value him so much for comes from the same place as his neurosis. To have him refer notes n prepare n speak better might seem like a simple ask on the surface, but that's not who he is. You get what you get with him. That's why he is who he is.

@@LeninMcDonalds Yeah he's certainly following the form of a true artist -- they have exceptional skillsets for the craft, but outside of that they typically struggle to be formal or as we like to say "normal". But the point still stands -- absolutely adore his craft, but I would rather have someone drill out his 1HR long rambles into a 5 minute summary. I couldn't stand trying to translate his responses, felt like he found gold but couldn't explain why it was gold. I would much prefer to make my own intereptations and move on from there, since the creator of the film isn't able to give some level of answer.

lmao bruh he's trolling. he's *performing* "his process" of confusion in the opening part to convey exactly what his process is: "you don't wanna be lost, but you have to get lost" and "writing is analogous to my life". The fumbling is the whole point lol
