When you are healthy and have freedom.....you are the king of the world!

The problem is that people trade in their freedom for comfort at the first opportunity. Comfort is overrated, it's struggle that makes us strong. And happy. Comfort makes us weak and want to seek ever more comfort.

I've recently experienced a seemingly reverse envy. I'm 76 and spent 3 months on a couple of remote Alaskan rivers. 2 of those months 100% alone from humans. I did have 5 wonderful huskies though. I was in a wall tent trapline camp. Wood stove, dogsled transport, ice fishing and trapping, mostly for beaver. I'm now in Cebu visiting friends and family. The reverse envy seems to be from relativly wealthy people who can't understand how I could enjoy being out there with no TV, no internet, no news or politics or fb etc. Just me and nature. I suppose envy might be the wrong expression of the reaction. They just find it difficult to believe that I could enjoy such a life without all of the exorbitant (to me) accessories. It's actually wonderful. I felt so much closer to nature and God, (higher power, if you like) and I'm filled with gratitude. At the moment, I'm laying in bed thinking about and yearning for my return to the camp and the dogs and wild animals. I need to remind myself to stay in the moment and enjoy my life here in the Philippines, or wherever, one day at a time. One simple day.

That is an interesting thought. I think many people feel something is missing from life. Not material things as Munger says but more a sense of meaning or a sense of connection to other people. It can circle back to being content with ourselves though. It seems to me that seeking comforts and "material well being" can be driven by these intangible needs as well.

I am actually an atheist but the framework is still useful. There is good material on-line, you don't need to a attend meetings. Another part of the program is learning to put more focus on other people. We can escape some of our negative thoughts by looking beyond ourselves a bit more. Breaking out of isolation is a big part of recovering from deep unhappiness. A way to do that is to offer help to others. Asking for help when we need it is important but helping others can make you have a new perspective that can be freeing or uplifting.

Totally agree with Charlie. If we were not so envious of what others have, and we were more thankful for basic things, the simple things like food, shelter, clothing, water, friendship, nature, and comfort in knowing God is in charge then we’d be much happier. I came into some money about 16-17 yrs ago and started spending/buying things. Wasted a lot of it, became too involved with what others thought, too concerned about image. I was happier b4 I had the money. Bought big house, expensive watches, fancy clothes, more expensive car that wasn’t needed, etc. I’ve since gotten rid of just about all of it, purged all the “junk,” the things that won’t be used anymore, are obsolete, kids won’t want/use, and it feels good. I still drive nice truck but as it’s very functional, but I drive right by bigger houses, people trying to look cool in their newer more expensive cars, etc, and don’t even look at them in the eyes. I can feel they’re puzzled as to why am not looking at them. I treat people with fairness/kindness, but don’t waste my time on those or those things that are just a show/image. Iv been there, done that, know what is just show/image, doesn’t work, zero sum game. Live minimalist life, quietly, stay off of social media and all the other garbage on screens, get outside, obey the 10 commandments. Doesn’t mean life with be easy, but will most likely be more peaceful. Wether a person knows it or not peace is what we all strive for/need deep down inside. All of us. Purge worldly things and seek God. Know God, know Peace. No God, no peace. It’s simple.

He is correct in his observation - people SHOULD be happy because things are better than they've ever been - we're materially much better off, we're more comfortable, people have so much freedom, and there is so much more equality than there was historically. But I think the reason is because people today don't remember those times when things weren't like that. We only remember things being the way they are now. Who alive today remembers what it was like before about 1950? Very few people. Very few people alive remember the Great Depression and World War II and what that was like. So we can't compare our current lives with that. I think the problem is people have poor relationships. People don't live near their families, or they don't get along with their family members. Or they have very few real friends. The old institutions people participated in, like marriage for one thing, but also church, or civic organizations, or clubs - people don't do these things now. The internet and cell phones made our lives easier to communicate but at the same time we're more disconnected from people now than we once were.

That is envy, you're describing what he spent 5 minutes articulating. Happiness is a transitory state of being. Unhappiness (another transitory state of being) comes from not measuring up to PERCEIVED expectations of where you feel you should be in life. Envy causes unhappiness. We live in a much safer and just society than what people used to endure in the past to survive (despite the election people are upset about, no one DIED en mass and will not). Yet the standard isn't, a warlord didn't kill me and I have food to eat, yay I'm content with life. The standard is, Elon Musk has more money than me and the Instagram girl went to Bali and I didn't, I'm unhappy with MY life in comparison to theirs.

@MJH65378 All I want is shelter and food. I don't care for baubles and other status displays. I don't even really care for travel, and I cook my own food. If people want these things, I don't have any ill will for them, other than I wish that they'd use their privilege and power to help humanity and society, but there's no great crime in pursuing one's own pleasure that doesn't harm anyone. I DO take umbrage with a system that allocates wealth to people who do harm to other people, the environment, and society as large. I dislike that there are people who profit from merely owning things and exploiting people who don't. I dislike oligarchy and artificial capitalist aristocracy that dissociates wealth accumulation from labor and value creation. I definitely dislike a system that incentivizes restricting the production of goods to protect profits, a system that would rather throw away food than feed the hungry so that profit margins may continue to rise. I am not envious of the people who do these things, I think that these conditions and these actions should not be allowed to exist. Most of all, though, I hate the culture that brainwashes people so heavily with individualism and greed that their only response to any criticism of those in power is "durr, you must be jealous of their stuff". Not everyone thinks like a petty dictator, enraged by their own inability to conquer the world. Nice projection, though.

What people is he referring to? Need to be specific, as there are socio-economic rungs. Most people are broke, it's not about envying the next person, it's about why they're working over 40 hours a week to make corporations loads of profits and barely see enough after taxes and expenses to make ends meet. That's before talking about time lost. Those are considered the lucky ones now too. The problem has always been greed, not envy. The middle classes are probably looking above them with a bit of envy as they strive to improve, but even the middle class are worst off than they were a decade ago. The middle classes are being phased out, so basically most people are pretty much poor or close to now. Greed always the problem.
@willnitschke17 күн бұрын
No the problem is envy. When some nitwit babbles about "greed" he typically means he wants other people's money, and he is angry they won't just hand it over to him. How dare I have to work for a living! Mummy told me I was special!

@@willnitschke Not really, these guys sat in their champagne philosophers chairs are just executing the most beautiful case of economic gaslighting you'll ever see. Just the top 1% making the 99% believe they're actually envious instead of effed over like they have been since, well, forever. The whole system is dodgy by design and now it's got to a point where they're basically telling everyone that it's their problem because........famines and no technology all those years ago, they've never had it so good. Don't even get me started with the hypocrisy of the supposed Climate Crisis and over-consumption being the cause of it - yet the poorest consume the least by virtue of having less, but they're told they're the ones who need to tone everything they're doing down. But nah, it's not greed, 1% of all the world's wealth in the hands of just a few is definitely altruistic, it's for everybody's good......apparently. Please 🙄

@@willnitschke KZbin deleted my original response for some unknown reason, but you are wrong, purely by virtue of how disproportionate the distribution of wealth is, it's like 10:90. There's about 8 billion people on the planet, so that ratio is not a coincidence! Nor is it anything but disingenuous to suggest that 90% of the entire population of 8 billion people ALL have an envy problem! The wealth distribution has always been stupendously disproportionate going back to medieval times (probably even earlier) but the middle classes at least were able to make ends meet. The fact they are slowly being squeezed out when things are supposed to be easier now, is showing you that there is something very wrong with the system. It's ALWAYS greed.

The homeless people who you see on the streets, are there because of drug and alcohol abuse and some from mental illness. Not because they can't work or have no money. Why most people are unhappy, is because housing was turned into an asset class. Gone are the days of a home at an earlier age, community, setting roots, career, family, life. Most are in a rent trap. Then those who can barely afford a home, get pushed out again because property tax goes through the roof. Corporate monopolies and wealthy families. It is greed. Not envy. My state has near low housing inventories. Accelerated by Covid of course. But a downward trend since 2016. I've heard this narrative of big money corporate interests squeezing the housing supply. In some areas certainly but for the rest of the country it's the fact that we're not building enough. When you look at housing starts / population we've had negative trend since the 1970s ... then we absolutely fell off a cliff after the 08 crash. It's been very challenging to build new housing in large part due to zoning and permitting. It's a bi-partisan issue which is that old incumbents do not want to zone new housing. They sit on their nest egg and let it increase in value at the cost of everyone else. Nobody wants to fix it. So the only thing you can do it try to get ahead of it by moving out even further into and hope your house is on the path of development.

Happiness makes us content and happiness is found in self-worth. Self-worth can come in any shape and size. It comes from going through your daily life in a manner that you like. Loving your life basically…. I think a lot of the famous rich people don’t find their love of life from getting money. They find their love of life in the pursuit and execution of things that happen to make them money. They are driven to achieve. If physical money was what they were trying to get then why not retirement for them? The pursuit of achievement doesn’t have to have money as its outcome. My grandfather was a small dairy farmer until the day he died. He wasn’t in to sports, he wasn’t in to fishing, he wasn’t in to drinking or chasing pretty women. He was in to dairy farming and he loved it, which ultimately he loved his life. He woke up at 4:30 am, 7 days a week for 88 years and he loved every minute of it.
