Johnny Cash had his own musical tv show 1969-1971on ABC and had a lot of country singers on his show. That's where this video is from and why it's grainy. You can watch his show on Get TV: Saturday, Dec 19 10:00pm ET Featuring The Carpenters, B Luman and R Lane Season 2 Episode 225 Sunday, Dec 20 10:00pm ET The Johnny Cash Christmas Show: Featuring The Everly Brothers And Roy Orbison Season 2 Episode 213

RIP Charlie Pride. F-COVID & 2020 Johnny Cash had people on his show who would not be heard on country radio. Some got on their because of things like this. But Johnny also had people on like Bob Dylan and the Carpenters. I believe he had control of who the artists were, not the network. Good to know he likely wasn't a racist.

@lancew.6568 4 жыл бұрын
@@joeyrobison6629 Yes, Charley lived in Dallas for the last 50 years. He moved here from ... Great Falls, Montana, where he had lived since moving from Helena in 1967. You see, before he was a great country singer, Charley was a damn good baseball pitcher (threw right but could hit from either side of the plate) in the Negro American League and then, after 2 years in the Army (56-58), the minor leagues. (BTW, while in the army, he was at Ft. Carson in CO and played ball for the fort's team which won the 'All Army' sports championship while he was there.) He played professial baseball from 1952 to 1960 and Semi-Pro '60-'67. His music career started to take-off in 1967, so he moved his family to Great Falls and then to Dallas 1969.

They're shakin' hands again, Johnny and Charley right about now. When I was a kid, mostly wanted rock and roll records and pop. I didn't want a lot of country records, but if it was Charley Pride, I wanted it and nobody better turn off the radio when he was on. A great storytelling singer and also an amazing person. He treated people with such kindness, helping new up and comers, caring for fans. About 20 years back, he was scheduled to play in Alberta, Canada and he hadn't been to Canada in a long long time. Some unscrupulous folks got a hold of a bunch of tickets, like they do, and sold them for jacked up prices and Charley got wind of that. He was so upset about it that he refunded those particular fans the difference between what they should have paid and the inflated price. I never forgot that. It spoke volumes about the man.

The world is less beautiful now that Charley Pride isn't in it. I'm 54, his voice and image is one of the first I remember next to my parents who owned his albums, I felt as if I had lost a close family member when I heard of his passing. That feeling was never present before with any other performer but because of Charley's down home ways and his friendly persona on the screen he seemed like a member of my own family. Thank you sweet Lord for Charley.

When Charlie's first few records were made they didn't include any mention of color in the Bio information, so nobody knew. They played the records on the radio, and people loved his voice and bought the records. It wasn't until he showed up to play live or promote at the radio station that most people found out. Surprise!

I grew up in the 70's in south Mississippi watching Charlie Pride sing country music, and Arthur Ashe play on the tennis court. Both were, in their respected fields, pretty much the lone African Americans in their industries. Both were so classy, so highly respected and esteemed by peers and fans, that all you saw was their gentle souls, class, and incredible talent. Arthur Ashe will always be my personal epitome of class, graciousness, and humility. Charlie Pride, to me, will always be the guy who transcended race, boundaries, and became embraced by country music fans and his contemporaries as a man of talent, class, and grace. His color was irrelevant. Thank you God for men such as these. RIP to a legend and pioneer! Love you CP!

He is a legend! Charley always had my respect and admiration.... even at the age of ten. He stuck it out to do what he loved in a tight nit genre that really wasn't ready for him .....but he won their hearts over in Nashville and caused a whole lotta folks to reevaluate their position on matters of ethnicity and inclusion. This was my parents's song. I don't know if you caught it, because you might not know all of his songs, but the "there'll be no mansions waiting on the hill, with crystal chandeliers" is a call back to one of his earlier songs "Crystal Chandeliers". "All I Have..." is about a poor man telling a woman that she won't have all the finer things, but he will give her love. The other is about a poor man wondering if the woman who left him for a rich man is truly happy with the finer things or if she is regretting passing up his love.

In the mid 60's my dad took me, age 15 or 16 too the Coliseum in Oakland Calif. for a country super tour. One of the first shows in the new venue. Ray Price (For The Good Times),Johnny Cash (Ring Of Fire),The Carter Family, The Statler Brothers, Roy Clark, Minnie Pearl,and Charley Pride. Almost total white audience and when Charley stepped on stage he looked out at the audience smiled and I'll never forget how he said, "I bet your wondering what I'm doing here." From those that didn't know his music came nervous laughter. We laughed and cheered. EVERYONE KNEW "WHAT HE WAS DOING THERE" by the end of his set. Hands down stole the show. R.I.P. Mr. PRIDE & thanks for the memories.

Thanks for spotlighting one of the legends from the golden age of country music. His voice and sound of his records in his early years gives me chills and is a perfect example of Real Country. He helped country music grow to a much bigger audience during his string of #1 hits. What a voice!

My mama *loved* this man. Saw him live in the 70s, also Loretta Lynn. I'm not a huge country fan, but I do love Charley's voice. He was a complete sweetheart.

Back in the early 80's I had a girlfriend that lived a couple streets over from Mr. Pride's house in North Dallas. I always made it a point to drive by his house and wave to him if he was sitting out on his front porch. He always waved back if he was.

Was watch a documentary on him today, when the DJ's would play his song on the radio. The record company didn't tell the DJ's that he was African American, they just told them he was a country singer from Mississippi.

Charley Pride sure did live this song. He and his wife Rozene married in 1956- when all he really had to offer her was him. They stayed together through thick and thin, through his well-deserved success and accolades in music, right to his very end. Theirs was a love story for the ages and we were all along for the ride. Rest in Peace Brother Charley, the heavens are ringing with the sound of your beautiful voice.

I have enjoyed Charlie Pride, it seems, forever! I'm 66 years old and as a early teen my dad had an album of his that had him telling a story of an older Caucasian lady that attended one of his early concerts. The ticket agent said, " you know he's" she stops him saying, " no, I've got the record! No, nope"!! Her favorite song was, Just Between You and Me. So when Charlie started singing that song, the lady jumped up screaming " IT'S TRUE! IT'S TRUE!""

I grew up listening to country music and Charley Pride was my aunties favourite singer. We listened to him all the time, I cried when I found out about him passing. There will never be another that’s for sure. He was married to his wife Rozene for sixty years,,, he leaves behind his children, grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Yes sir, Jamel, that was Jonny Cash. When Kansas Granny grew up 70 years ago in a small midwestern town there were no soul or urban stations-only county. Mama taught us to feel all music with our ears. All genres of music. Soul, country, opera, rock, classical. Many of us in my age group loved Charlie and Johnny. Sad that they are gone but they left us so much enjoyment. They were not lives wasted. Thank you and Adrienne for what you do for us!
