Charlie did have things to deal with for sure. there were many stations that refused to play his music because he was black but the funny thing was alot of the music fans didn't know he was because you can't see color on the radio and they kept asking for him to be played. later on when Charlie won a major award and Loretta Lynn was the presenter, the TV people told her to announce his win and then step back away from him and let him come get the award, her response was , Ain't nobody gponna tell me where I have to stand and when Charlie came on stage she went up and presented the award to him and gave him a big hug on national TV lol Charlie was well respected among the musicians and loved by the fans

I am a proud country music fan, and I LOVE Charley's music. Love his voice! And, I am a 71 yr old white woman. Charley's skin color did not mean a thing to me. It was his voice that got me. I'm old enough, and country enough, to remember that we had listened to Charlie Pride often on the AM radio and were all astonished to find out he was black. It was a pretty well kept secret when he first started out. Not so much that it was hidden, so much as it wasn't "advertised". Anyway, it didn't change anyone's opinion of him, at least not anyone I knew in Tn. But to your point, I totally think the vast majority of the "racist" stuff is strictly to keep the people divided and therefore, made up, staged, or outright lied about by the press.

When he was invited to the Opry, which was the pinnacle for a country artist, they didn't know he was black until he walked out on the stage. But you know, for the most part, skin color is not that big a deal in country and rock genres. Both country and rock have roots in the blues, which is mostly the province of black men. I'm sure it wasn't all smiles and rainbows, the times being what they were, but most of that resistance came from the system, not from the other musicians and not from the people. Musicians don't care about anything but whether or not you can play the music or sing the songs. And white people, for the most part, don't care as long as the music's good. I remember when Living Color came out with Cult of Personality, someone would be like, did you know they're black? And everyone else would be like, cool, they're black.

Mr. Charlie Pride and Marty Stuart both grew up in Mississippi. Marty is part Choctaw. Charlie grew up long before Marty but had a transistor radio. The only radio station his transistor could pick up was a country station and he had no idea there were other types of music out there. So he got good at singing like the country music singers and became a household name, (mostly in white households) and everyone loved him. He was a staple in the country music industry very early on. Marty had a more stable financial family and was able to attend fairs and such that had up and coming country music singers. Marty left home at age 12/13 to travel with The Lester Flatt band. He is considered a musical instrument and country music history expertise. Marty even founded and owns the Country music hall of fame. People have been taught so many lies. I was born in Alabama in 1955 and my parents were from Mississippi. My English and Scottish grandparents live in a mixed neighborhood, and no one really thought anything about it. Everyone was coming out of The Great Depression and were just trying to live. My grandparents lived next door to Hattie and Manuel/Emmanuel. Manues was 2 when the slaves were given their freedom. His mama had been a cook for the plantation owners. She was also the one who rang the lunch and dinner bell to let the field workers come in to eat. I own that dinner bell to this day as my daddy bought from that sweet man. Hattie and Manuel never had children, but my grandparents had 9 and my uncles would head down a couple of miles to fish and hunt for any meat they could find. My grandparents had about 1/4 of an acre and they grew tomatoes, peas, beans. okra....fruit trees to make jams and jellies. Mrs Hattie would help see after her children and Mamaw would share food in exchange for that help. The only thing they usually bought was Flour, Corn meal, Lard (when they lived in town and could not render it themselves.

I saw Charley Pride in concert when he was 71, and he still sounded just as good. He still hit the power notes of Kaw-Liga. He was still touring into his 80s before he passed. He reminds me of Tiger Woods. Talent is a thing that can make race disappear. He and Ray Charles were accepted in country music because of their talent. It was undeniable. Well, unless you're Eminem

Charlie was amazing. Got to meet him once when I was a teen. Such a kind, talented man. I’m also nuts about Marty Stuart, the musician who just introduced him.

There is a clip of charlie Pride receiving his Living Legend Award from Loretta Lynn, you should watch it, seriously, it always brings a tear to my eye. There was so much whoopin and hollerin at the awards show and you can tell he was much loved. Standing ovation for him. he was wonderful.

Charlie Pride was one of my mother's favorites and since i am 70 years old that was quite a while ago! About 1964 or so. I loved to listen to my mom's country music, my favorite was Marty Robbins. But only when she wasn't home. I would never tell anyone because i was embarrassed. I only listened to rock 'n' roll and I didn't want anyone to think I wasn't cool!

THAT is Marty Stuart. What a hottie. He started playing mandolin for Johnny Cash at 14-years-old. He is an icon on his own. Look up Marty’s stuff from the 90s.

What you need to know to understand the background is that the studio this was recorded in a studio in Meridian Mississippi, which is in the middle of the Bible Belt and we here in Mississippi love our country and are very proud of our flag. Charlie Pride was the first Black man to make it big in country music.

The man at the beginning is Marty Stuart. This video was taken from The Marty Stuart Show. A variety show from the early to mid 2000’s. I highly recommend watching a clip from the episode featuring Hank Williams III. In the clip they do a duet of Hank Williams Sr.’s A Picture From Life’s Other Side.

When I was little, my parents had a cassette (yes, a cassette) of Charlie Pride's greatest hits. It was called, "Charley Pride: 10 Essential Songs". I almost wore that poor thing out because I loved it so much. My parents couldn't never listen to it because I always had it with me. Now Darius Rucker from "Hooty and the Blowfish" has a very successful country music career. I heard that Beyonce just released a country album, also. There are many other performers. Do a quick search, I found one that listed over 32 artists and another that listed 50. Enjoy!

Loved him since I first heard him as a kid. So many great songs. His wife was sweet and supportive of him.
