Even with no lyrics, the sound of melancholy loss, which the song is about, comes through in the Trumpet Solo!

Charlie Shavers has one of , if not the the most "voice -like" trumpet techniques you'll find. The overall breath, tone, and chromatic control, he has is astounding. And that effortless vibrato, = good stuff.

He reminds me of Harry James, who once remarked "I sing through my horn."

I've just tried a used Besson cornet, silver, offered for 250 Swiss Francs in our Swiss mountain village second hand shop. Excellent deal. But trumpet is only my third instrument, I'm a clarinetist. When I hear people like Shavers play I feel that I'm not made for trumpet. I envy people with such lips.

New to Mr. Shavers......time for Research, as I am like to do for new discoveries of mine. It started with Glenn Miller when I played trombone in grade school, 1970s!! Charlie Shavers mugged like Diz with the cheeks?! Such a sound!!

wyndhl eodumegwu His birthday is actually coming up! And station WKCR in NYC(Fordham Univ. )89.9 does 24 hrs. of major contributors to jazz, Bix included, on their birthdays! Satchmo gets TWO days since it was thought he was born July 4 instead of the actual date, Aug. 4. Have to see if CS is so honored!

No one can surpass The Maestro Harry James. One may only come close, and Charlie Shavers was one of the foremost virtuosos to be spoken of in the same breath.
@Laurenzatto547 жыл бұрын
Harry James was a good trumpet who often plays commercial music. As for Jazz music, Armstrong, Charlie Shavers, Roy Eldridge, Dizzy, Clifford Brown, Clark Terry, Fats Navarro... were by far better than him

Still have problems with that piano solo, as though the player can't find the right tempo or the right key.
