I met Rocky when I was just a boy...early 60's. My dad and I were in line to get hamburgers and my dad saw Rocky also waiting nearby so we went over and talked with him. No one else around. Shook his hand and I'll tell you I remember it being a HUGE hand and it felt as strong as steel to me. Very impressive and nice guy. A gentleman.

Dont know who was talking smack about Marciano. That is crazy because he was durable had a great chin high motor and could through powerful shots with any hand from any angle. He was not always the strongest man in the ring but he would throw them hands with all kinds of torque. Not fair to compare him with the champions of 80,90, and forward. You could not put those fighters in his time and expect them to be the same either.

It's a shame that the great Archie Moore is known mostly for his loses to Marciano and Ali. However, even in his defeat his ring brilliance is undeniable. MMA and boxers should spend hours studying his every move. It takes me 30 minutes to watch one full round.

The REAL Greatest Of All Time, Rocky Marciano. The guy was an absolute machine. A Roman Gladiator. As more time went on, he didn’t get tired at all, and in fact, he got stronger as the fight went on. I've never seen a boxer take such a beating. I'm just as amazed at how Moore took so many killer punches as of how Marciano was able to deliver them. Moore had the gift, or instinct of how to shift and bob his head only inches to either avoid a punch or reduce the impact of a punch. Very elusive. This match was the closest thing to humanly impossible at two extremes, punching and being punched that I've seen.

Yes, that may have been his greatest asset, his conditioning. It was frightening watching that relentless assault. He wrote/said something about being in shape, and I'm only a fan but from watching many, many fights across all eras, conditioning is one of the most important parameters in a big fight. Most great champions who came later--Roy Jones, Tommy Hearns, Marvin Hagler, Floyd, Manny . . OK, probably not Duran so much, but . . took their conditioning seriously.

I read some replies how Archie gassed out from age in this fight. I disagree, despite him being 38. He defeated Nino Valdes four months before the Marciano fight in 1955 and went full speed to the end, actually won the last two rounds. He slowed down here from the devastating body shots and head blows from Marciano. Despite his incredible longevity in the ring, Archie was still human.

I once read that when Marciano got knocked down that the referee forgot about the eight count being waived for this fight. The referee supposedly got to the count of six before he realized his mistake, and given the level of physical condition that Marciano was in, this six seconds was more than enough recovery time. I’ve always wondered what might have happened if Moore had not been made to wait. It’s telling that Marciano never fought again, despite being in his very early thirties.

Archie is the one who had no chin after this beating. He only fought four light heavyweights after this bout in the next five years, none of them were number one contenders, so the NBA yanked Archie's LH title in 1960. The general opinion then was there was no one left for Marciano to fight. He beat all of the top HW contenders and the LH champion. His wife and mother were pressuring him to quit and his manager had screwed him to death. Moore was the fighter permanently diminished, not Marciano. Archie fought for eight more years against light heavyweights barely in the top ten and heavyweights with 20 and 0 records against nobodies or 50 percent winning records and two pro wrestlers who only boxed once in their life-against Archie. I admire Archie's passion for the sport. If he hadn't fought Marciano I think he would have had a lot more wins against bigger name fighters, but that would apply to Joe Louis, Jersey Joe, Lee Savold, LaStarza and other fighters who were never the same after the Marciano bouts.

I really don't understand why people constantly try to tear down these great fighters by saying he couldn't have beat this or that guy- the facts are Marciano was a great fighter and he beat many other great fighters. I know I would hate to fight anyone with a punch half as powerful as he had. Hi SOSS. I am in the process of watching some of Rocky's fights again (I had VCR tapes of 70-90 OLD fights in the 90's, a number of Rocky's), having gone through MOST of Ali's recently, and need to watch more, for sure. But I will tell you ROUGHLY, I put him EITHER in the mid range of the top ten or possibly, at worst, just outside it, taking into account a lot of experts and the fact I haven't seen MOST of his fights yet, i.e. I might potentially be swayed to lower things SOME. I also will allow, once I have revisited (READ MORE, too) guys like Dempsey or Jack Johnson, Tunney...he could go a wee higher than I have him. Many factors, and I don't like to go off half cocked or get ahead of myself, trying to EXACTLY place him. I have Ali then Louis, think their careers largely parallel one another, oddly, and with polarities. If Ali goes on without Exile, I honestly would hate all the Joe Frazier drama lost, but don't think he loses pre-exile, nor to Norton. In any event, no need for three fights with them both. He might well have gone almost EXACTLY the same, record wise, as Louis, either without a loss or with one POSSIBLY to Norton, maybe owing to that baffling for him style, same as Joe had ONE loss before retiring, and like Joe, I think 11 or under 12 years reign is very possible. Of course Louis has more KOs, but Ali would have more, too, without exile, likely a bakers dozen more fights without question give or take one or two, but then Louis lost about the same time or more as Ali, to WWII. The parallels. I just know Louis is WONDERFUL, power in both mitts, SCIENTIFIC, never wasted a punch, all of that. But he had problems with speed fighters, Conn being one of them, all of what looks like a buck seventy eight in pounds, have to check on that (smile). So that is why I think Ali. But I think any discussion for ATG has to include those two, first and foremost. PEACE (and I know I am but a drop of water in an ocean of humanity, but most experts, they have it Louis or Ali, Ali or Louis.). If they fought THREE TIMES, nobody goes 3-0, don't think. So I again, put myself on Mr. Versatility. Joe was UNBLEMISHED in rematches, something like 14-0 I read, or with guys who gave him trouble of any kind. Once he saw you, he could analyze you, find your weak link (not as much film in those days). But the speed thing, along with a superior chin, I believe, if he could weather Joe, I think he'd clutch, survive. Then he'd stay just outside, mostly (would not NEED to dance all night, vs. Joe)...but hopefully we all get to find out in the afterlife!

P.S. While I do think Ali wins on cuts or decision, I DO NOT think it is any easy fight by any strecch, for Ali. He leaves ALL foolishness and showboating aside, or else. Dimensions are Marciano's undoing, mostly. Then again, at 6'3 and 212, Marciano would lose that compact, power swinging, but he'd be fearsome as hell nonetheless, and he was already that, at 5'10 and a quarter, 185. The stamina thing was incredible, but a young, 1960s Ali is the only other cat I see matching that, while mostly avoiding all he could, winning on cuts or points, i.e. TKO or decision. Not to say Rocky COULDN't surprise , cause he had dynamite, for sure!

Most likely DO strictly look at a head to head, but whereas Lennox Lewis likely gives Rocky a ton of trouble (not convinced he wins flat out, or even wins, with HIS chin, and Rocky's stamina, but 6'5, 230 or whatever, etc spells trouble for Rock, style-wise), in no way would I consider HIM ranked all time ahead of Rock. So yeah, other considerations. Length of reign, strength of opposition, did they duck or avoid anybody (I think even Joe only fought TWO black fighters, but you please correct me if that is a wrong memory on my part)...but ALSO, one needs to weigh or discount even that, a tad, as after Jack Johnson rubbing his self in white America's face (took guts), the old timers will tell us, America and more specifically the managers didn't want their white fighters (or possibly even black Joe Louis, who seemed a good soldier, all around) to fight black fighters, up until around the late 40's, early fiftties. An inexact science, to be sure, this whole speculative and unprovable WHO is the All Time Best game that is fun to play. But I think guys like yourself, Rich G, myself, and anybody who truly APPRECIATES the history of it, does try to consider as many angles as are fair and right. And of course, the guys before film, you make great points on (or before MUCH film on them). Me, since I grew up on and love Ali (got to admit ones one unconscious as well as overt bias), I tend to debate some of the lovers of sluggers, "Tyson would kill Ali", or "49-0, 43 KOs, there IS NO DEBATE" type of posts. I ALSO, FWIW, tend to discount to a degree great fighters' LATE in career, i.e. OLD or OUT OF RETIREMENT fights, and not just because Ali lost to Holmes and Berbick at 38 and beyond. Joe Louis at 37 and a half LOOKED studly, even 10 pounds heavier but well muscled vs. Marciano, who was 27, but that might as well have been undigested red meat in his colon like we all supposedly have, as he was pretty well done as a fighter, paying back the IRS, and post KO, he fought only exhibitions. I do not KNOW, but am guessing he was likely just fighting for dough then, so no offense to Marciano or his fans (and I am one), but as far as rating Joe Louis, and considering his overall record, I think the better measure of the man is his record (with just that one loss to Schmeling) up to his retirement. I say this, because, as well, you will hear the ignorant say things like a guy had too many losses, for them, and forget maybe the guy had over a hundred wins, or that he fought MANY MORE TIMES A YEAR than some modern fighter they prefer. Saddler, he fought I think 22 and 24 times in a year one or two years! Ali, as a HEAVY, 8 times, 6 times, etc. Fighting and fighting again three weeks later, folks need to respect what these guys did, risked, and likely HAD to, owing to power structure, and low pay, etc. Of course, we all have bias, some like the boxers, some the sluggers. I see Joe Louis as a perfect blend of both of those things, which is why he is often rated first, maybe slightly more as second, which of course, as with Dempsey, is something that likely has to do with folks dying off, as well, who love this game and like to rate them all. Again, Joe reigned "under" 12 years, as the bankers like to say about the prices of stocks, meaning close to 12. And he lost about four to the war. Tough to argue with that, and of course, as Jack Johnson paved a way, so did Joe, and on to Ali, one for the other, Ali for the rest, as to MONEY exploding. Joe was all man, and a killer with scientific skill. But his particular weak link is Ali's ultimate strength, and we all know he had many himself, the most versatile fighter of the heavies, so that is saying considerable much. Speed, and the smarts to stay out of range, against a shuffling, methodical Louis, I KNOW it is maybe 6 of one, half a dozen of the other, but beyond my love and heart, if I had to bet the house of my loved ones lives to be freed from kidnappers, I would bet on Ali, because of this. Joe, of course was young, but that KO by Schmeling weighs in, for me, as well. I discount the Marciano one, as far as taking his true measure, same as the TKO of Ali at about the same age, vs. for me about tail end top ten all time Holmes, of course younger. It could be said to be an anomaly, Joe being what, all of 22 or so? But Ali got caught a cpl left hooks himself, survived to KO his man. Splitting hairs, like I said, I don't think we get anything but a split, in three fights, if they could stand facing one another that many (basically only Frazier and Ali ever gave us all that brutality at the Heavies slot, three times). But for me, beyond the head to head, as you say. Sure, he refused induction, but boxing leaped prematurely, and we lost years, same as Louis did. But the superior chin, I believe, belongs to Ali, as well. And Ali fought them ALL, no question, period. Like it or not, politics, race, MONEY spent by mostly white fans, etc...Jack Johnson, Dempsey, Louis to a degree, Rocky even (sorry, Rich, as well, if reading), there are guys it seems to me they COULD have fought, but did not. MANY big, rated top ten at some point in their careers guys, 6'2 and 200 plus pounds, that Marciano was not matched with (I have a saved blog that a guy in and around the fight game for some decades compiled). Rich also informed me that the Vingo fight, put into a Coma by Rock, likely colored his mental killer instinct vs. LaStarza I, which MOST feel Marciano flatly should have lost on decision, not won. I can believe that, Ez Charles changed to a boxer more, after he killed a guy. But there is always the flip side of the coin. Folks will say Liston was only 13-1 or 19-1 or whatever, he practically killed Vingo, so why would he fight green Liston? Or that Floyd Patterson's Cus D'Amato wanted to groom Floyd a spell, not knowing Rocky would retire after Moore. Believable, true. But then you hear folks telling you to read January of whatever 1956 Sports Illustrated, the trainer for one or both claiming vehemently that they got avoided, pure and simple...and remember, Floyd had yet to get KO'd (as he did some number of times) by Johansson, or Liston twice, so his chin was not really an issue exposed, but he WAS much faster, younger, and LIston WAS a 6 foot guy who projected himself about 6 foot ten, with a pole axe of a jab, and power. Watching Marciano his last few, and post fight, seeing his face, him getting felled twice by Walcott, Moore, as 38 and 41 year old guys, with a cpl light heavies he fought, and the like...lets just say there is SOME debate, there. I don't blame him for retiring, and I could totally believe Floyd could just flat be KO'd by Rock, but I DID read that once Floyd lost to Johansson, Rocky went back to the gym, for about a month, then realized he didn't have it in him to pay the price. But does that mean Floyd ducked him, as he did Liston for six years, or that Rock saw a slower, older fighter with just a big right in Ingmar, and cherry picked, though he decided not to, ultimately? Hey, Marciano was ALL HEART, the parts that weren't Killer power and wolverine like stamina. NOT disparaging, but if Louis only fought two black fighters himself (he was VERY POPULAR, if he demanded it, he could have given more guys a chance, if he WANTED to, my guess), and Ali fought them ALL, even Shavers at 35, for Pete's sake, and so many greats (golden era, heavies) when past his prime in the 70's, I have to weigh that in his favor. One last thing--again, boxing being such a dirty business, we all know that jewish and italian mobsters ran it for so long, the way it was--if you maybe didn't take a dive some fight, no title shot for you. Not the fighter's fault. But Marciano, of all fighters, can not be said to be immune to benefiting from his association with Mr Carbo, was it? In other words, a ref or judge, in the LaStarza, or maybe Lowry fight, I can see some help there, if you will. I mean, apocryphal story or true, i.e. the mobster yelling at Rock's dad about what he was cooking for him, Rock telling him never do that again, wasn't Carbo or whomever's son in the plane with Marciano the night he died? NOT denigrating--his skills, prowess...just saying, even leaving mobsters out of things, just considering boxing commisions, corrupt as they be, MANY a Champion got the benefit of controversial calls, decisions. Ali, he may have gotten such help in the third Norton bout, one I admittedly have saved for among the last three or four to rewatch, to be honest. Ali was bigger than boxing then, it was close, and to also be honest, Norton had some hubris, thinking he had it in the bag or something, didn't do much of anything the last round. Correctly called as even then or not, up to the 14th as it was, NOT going hard enough likely at LEAST gave the powers that be reason to keep the money making machine rolling a little longer. Far as Ali controvery goes, I know folks claim MANY of his fights were, but there really only is ONE (this third Norton bout) for real. I've rewatched Norton II, and the only controversial thing about that one to ME is why it wasn't UNANIMOUS, for ALI, though I had it 7-5, as Norton got arm weary late, and Ali made sure to come in at his dancing weight, 212, humbled by the first loss. Young had me worried for sure, against fattest ever Ali, as a kid, but a rewatch told me all I needed to know, those FOUR rounds, and multiple times within them, that he hid like a pansy, his head and body OUTSIDE the ropes, Ali even looking at the ref once, not doing anything, and leaning WAY out and over himself, beating on the chickenshit for doing so. WITHOUT all that, I had it scored a draw, or possibly a split decision for Young, true, but it was UNANIMOUS for ALI, which I'd forgot, which means he got penalized for those tactics, those rounds, no other way to explain it. Some say Shavers, but that was while a GOOD fight, in truth NOT hard to score, 9-6 I had it for Ali, and they showed the scoring between rounds, a gimmick, and Ernie saved his energy for late rounds, trying to show the world he was capable, and blew most of that in great 13th, 14th rounds for him, still winging in the 15th, Ali coming into that one tired, hurt, but ultimately nearly KOing Shavers in the last 20 seconds, the bell being Shaver's friend there, and Shavers later years admitting he thought at first he'd won, but saying, "I had some good rounds", but pacing was still a problem. And the Liston fights, people, PLEASE, he beat him like he was his Daddy, the first time, look at it, and Liston's face, made him quit, afraid of the KO that was COMING. The second, the punch DID land, Sonny was leaning forward, off balance, touches his gloves to the canvas, Ali over him, rolls away. NO, not enough to keep him down, and Sonny rolls over like a bad actor, so yeah, he either decided why bother, or was on the take (HE was a mob leg breaker, in the day, so believable), but either way, Ali looks PISSED, standing over him, like GET UP, SUCKER. The end result would have been no different, just a different round. In fairness to the old fighters, having to bow to the mob here or there, or benefit from them...Ali was uniquely blessed NOT ONLY of spirit, but owing to his chosen religion and association with the Nation of Islam, had the MUSCLE, behind the scenes, to keep such influences at bay. They didn't want to pick a fight with the power structure, but were well armed, and could tell any mobsters, I am guessing, to fuck right off, or else, i.e. a war. So in Ali's time, things got as cleaned up as they ever would be, and let's face it , they had showed with likely having Malcom X killed that they could do the do. If we meet in heaven or the like, hopefully it is a place where dreams come true, and we can buy one another a beer and take our seats and watch some of these fantasies, and if The Brown Bomber or Brockton Blockbuster should prove me wrong, or Ali you or someone else, we can just marvel and congratulate, and say, "There's a rematch upcoming, see you there!" I tend to keep my theorizing to a ring, gloves, the rules in play...but just as the story of a surly and tardy gas station attendant once got a, "Hey man, hurry up" from Ali, then gave Ali (young guy then) some barked words back about let him do his job, and a travel companion of Ali said, "You just whipped Sonny Liston, you gonna take that from him?", and Ali chose to respect and leave well enough alone, saying, "That man looks tougher than Sonny Liston", we all know, somewhere out there, unknown, are likely guys who in a different venue could whip all these guys we all love. When Marciano closed in on opponents, he did it out of a crouch bobbing and weaving. He was very crafty and sly in the way he moved in on opponents. Ali said Rocky was surprisingly hard to hit cleanly.

Yes. He developed that funny style because of his short arms. He just wanted to land one of his haymakers [eg, 'Suzie Q'] and he was in tremendous shape, from an almost masochistic training regimen . . So he could pour it on, like he did here. He MISSED most of those punches, do you know how tiring that is? Even Rocky could get punched out . . But of course he could recover faster too. One fellow fighter once said of Floyd, "he always trains like he's broke". Many great later champions learned from Marciano.

But Marciano would die before giving up the possibility to win a match. Marciano is an example of strong determination. The WILL that go beyond the technique and the body structure. Anyways, Archie was a better technician but the same archie at 10 years younger would have been beaten by Marciano in the same fashion...maybe 3 rounds or so further in but the end result would be the same. One of the rare times Moore was the bigger man in a heavyweight fight. At weigh in they were equal but by fight time you could tell Moore was bigger. Rocky was without equal in conditioning, work rate, and punch volume. He sometimes averaged 130 punches a round, insane for a heavyweight. Insane for ANY weight. Even though he was 7 years younger than Moore, Rocky was old for a boxer of that style and work rate which is likely why he retired after this fight. At age 32 it's damn hard to keep up the maniacal training regimen required to fight like Rock did. Joe Frazier, who trained like a man possessed, said his fight training regimen merely equaled Marciano's normal every day regimen. Moore knew every trick in the book and that allowed him to survive very late into his career. Being perhaps the hardest lb for lb puncher in boxing history helped too. But even his best shot (and that was SLICK) floored Rock for a count of only 2. Rock's workrate was just too much for the ole Mongoose.

Actually he did have foot work that’s what allowed him to close distances and he even did a step over which is a no no in boxing but he was able to do it from time to time…. Watch ROCKY’S slide, slide shuffle leading in to his KO of Walcott in the title fight…. Watch it slow motion…. It’s his footwork that puts him in position to throw the most devastating single punch in history.

One thing that I noticed after watching this fight ofr the 100th time is that Marciano was such a brilliant strategist. After getting kncoked down he made an adjustment that stopped Moore from being able to punch back effectively. He threw a lot of short powerful punches that Moore was too busy worrying about to get any offense of his own going. Rocky was one hell of a fighter. Great guy too. One of the best EVER!

@naim sharif the fixing fights theory has been tossed out by historians and boxers of all races both of that era and modern times. It's a bogus myth, period. A perfect record by no means makes him the greatest of all time as there are other considerations. But going for the "some of those must have been fixes!" route is inaccurate and intellectually lazy. And I don't give a damn what his or any fighter's skin color is. In fact, I have Joe Louis and Ali above him overall just in the heavyweight class. And have Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore, and many others nearly even with him. Moore certainly had more impressive longevity. And a lot of all time greats fell behind on score cards frequently. Joe Louis had several fights where he was being outpointed but beat his opponent. And Joe is one of if not the greatest heavyweights of all time. He managed to beat jersey joe Walcott who was a good boxer, but mostly fought as a light heavyweight and was knocked in several prior fights, making him vulnerable to knockouts. He struggled to beat ezzard Charles who was suffering early symptoms of ALS. He managed to beat 37 year old washed up joe Louis, and in this fight he barely scraped by 41 year old Archie Moore who was just a ghost of his earlier self. Marciano didn’t hold the title very long, fight many notable fighters, and he never fought any good fighters in his prime. Put Marciano against joe Louis, Archie Moore or ezzard Charles when they were in their prime and it would be a far different story.

I have to chuckle when people down Marciano for his size or quality of competition or total number of fights. All are just immaterial to his rank all time. He took on all comers, and defended his heavyweight title 6 times, never losing a single title fight and remained undefeated for his career (49-0 the only heavyweight champ to do that) with an incredible career knockout to win ratio pushing 90%. His pound for pound power speaks for itself, and he faced quality, much bigger boxers(Ezzard Charles, Archie Moore and Jersey Joe Wolcott) which in my mind, easily puts him in the conversation with the best of all time.

Marciano started old he was 25 his first pro fight...Joe Louis said Marciano hit harder than any boxer he had ever boxed,quite a compliment from a boxer who held the title 1937 -1949 12 years and 25 title defenses.
