For those who don't know, the real life Mike Vickers was a total badass. He scored the highest score possible on the Army intelligence test before joining the Army Special Forces. Despite his unassuming appearance (you can't find many pictures of Mike from back then but the ones I've seen show they portrayed his stature pretty accurately in the movie) he was considered one of the foremost experts in hand to hand combat. In addition to joining the special forces he also successfully passed Ranger school and cross trained with the SEALS and SAS. Mike was reportedly obsessed with Soviet weapons and tactics which is the main reason Gust came to him for Operation Cyclone. Post Cold War he gained his Ph.D in International Relations and went on to serve in both the defense and intelligence departments under two presidents. At one point during Barack Obama's administration he was the highest level civilian intelligence offical.

Hoffman was up there with Daniel Day Lewis (my #1) in acting ability. Hanks is a solid actor, and a very likeable person, but he's very similar in every role, even films like Forest Gump, but that's also because he takes relatively "safe" roles. That's fine. Tom Cruise is the same guy in every film, and people love his films as well. But Hoffman could be the most evil villain in Mission: Impossible 3. Do an amazing Truman Capote. Be Gust Avrakotos in Charlie Wilson's War. Be Art Howe in Moneyball. Or a whiny news guy in Red Dragon ... and its all completely believable, and well done

I suppose he's giving a more comprehensive list of armament the fighters needed in general, but none of these arms, save for the manpads, 170mm rockets, and RPGs were any big whoop, and like you said, none of this list besides possibly those three (at close range) could even come close to taking down a Hind. I've only gotten into guns a few years ago, and I've since become utterly disgusted how ignorant most Hollywood writers are about weapons generally, and guns in particular. If Charlie Wilson was half as smart as he supposedly was, he'd have been able to assemble this list or something better himself with a moment's reflection. Pathetic.

Pretty sure it's more about all the supplies they'd need to fight back effectively, not just about shooting down helicopters. The reason they need AKs is because then they can scavenge supplies from the Russians after they kills a bunch or steal their supplies instead of being totally reliant on the US being able to supply them. (And being unable to fight if those supply lines get cut.) Then you've got anti-tank and APC weapons, mines that can avoid easy detection and can be left to disrupt troop movements and cause extra casualties, long distance weapons for pinprick raids and ambushes to bleed the Soviets out and lower morale, more effective communication that's harder for the Soviets to track... Charlie is overly focused on the Hinds and other helicopters like a Hip. Vickers is talking about the broader picture of what needs to be done in the overall conflict.

Yeah I was also surprised, watched this movie several times years ago, and only now it startled me. Btw Black Hawk Down is a goldmine for this, almost every actor already was or became well established.

I actually met a Green Beret at a bar recently. Same age as me... totally unassuming guy. Normal, average looking, fit but not a big guy. Totally unassuming and took me completely off-guard. I was immediately impressed by his tact and succinctness when speaking.

"Yeah, my friend, I'm gon- I'm gonna need ya for a second..." So many good lines, including not _one_ but _two_ great monologues. The Window Scene is like a master class in defining and describing a character for a movie. It's great exposition, and one of the rare examples of info-dumps done properly. It shows us exactly what sort of character we're dealing with. Also, full credit to John Slattery in that scene, too.

The USA did not intentionally create the Taliban or Al Qaeda, but they did have a major hand in arming and equipping the people who eventually did. The real flaw is a simple lack of foresight in US foriegn policy.

Some sense of the Soviet role in Afghanistan and the danger of Soviet expansion in the direction of the Persian Gulf would help balance this conversation - The Soviets' genocidal war that produced millions of refugees who were in Pakistan was a major part of the problem... That and Pakistan's own agenda in creating a new generation of Mujahadin... the world has more than one moving part.

We had a *major* if not decisive role. The U.S. and the CIA made a *huge* tactical mistake by instrumentalizing Islam as a weapon of war against the Soviets and reviving *jihad* as a modern day concept. Islam had mostly quieted down (aside from the Iranian revolution, but again that's more fault of the U.S. than anyone else), but we had to keep fighting communism and making deals with the devil Saudi Arabia to maintain our control of the oil supply and strategic interests. It was a deadly gamble and given the way things unfolded, it caused 9-11, the 2nd gulf war, and possibly the decline and who knows, given time, possibly the fall of Europe and western civilization itself. Bin Laden is laughing from beyond the grave. Islam will take at least another century to be reformed (if it can be at all), and most likely it will continue to wreak havoc all the way up until it starts WWIII.

This reminds me of The Deep Water Horizon oil rig investigation when a guy was cross examining the electrical engineer on the rig...I was paying attention his line of questions were leading to find out if the engineer was Qualified. When asked where he got his training he answered " I was an electrical engineer on America's Harrier jet program".... from then on the guy asking the questions addressed him as " Sir"
