Editor's Note: Early runs on SpeedDemosArchive used a different system for timing Super Mario 64 runs in which they started from when the player first gains control of Mario rather than from console power on. This makes SDA timing about a minute faster than modern day timing conventions. For the sake of clarity, any pages showing SDA timings have been edited to show their modern day equivalent times. Some forum posts have also had names edited for the sake of protecting players' identities.
Videos Used:

• Very tedious and nerdy...
• SM64 [TAS] - BOB 100 c...
Videos of any still existing cheated runs can be found in the sources for FrostyZako's writeup.

IMPORTANT EDIT: After several more watchings, FrostyZako has compiled his own thoughts and clarifications on this video. There are some much needed clarifications on potentially misleading sections of the history that this video has covered. Please read about them here: docs.google.com/document/d/1Q8nzdqtn86B5Ewo6i7eb_vVBddeYH093lOQmxAiSlrg I am EXTREMELY grateful to Zako's help in every step of this video's production even after its final release. Check the community post on my channel page for more info: kzbin.infoUgzetxdvlR5D7mtdul54AaABCQ Under no circumstances should anyone watching this video attempt to seek out or harass any of the individuals shown in this video. I do not condone cheating nor do I condone harassment. Please behave yourselves. Edit: Subtitles have now been added. Thank you all so much for watching! I hope to have a slightly more frequent upload schedule in the future (1-2 vids per month hopefully). This video was the result of over a month of consolidating 10+ years of information. That being said, my job was just to put all of the pieces together. The pieces themselves were almost entirely provided by SM64 Historian FrostyZako. Zako's incredible work is essentially what made this whole video possible. He additionally helped me through the entire writing process by constantly providing me with even more detailed information and updating his own writings accordingly. This went a long way in helping this video to be as complete as it is. Many of those extra details go beyond the scope of this video though, so please check out Zako's full writeups on the subject for a more in depth look. There's even a cheater or two that I didn't cover here. Links in the description. :)

@StarkMaximum
@StarkMaximum 3 жыл бұрын
Honestly, to me it sounds like someone who's not taking the accusation seriously because he just sees it as "cheating in a video game for kids", thus why he seems to be acting like being caught cheating was some grand sin to the point where he was having omens in dreams about it. It has a tone of "whatever dude, I throw myself on the mercy of the court, I'm the criminal, do what you will with me". So no, I don't think it's creepy, I think it's someone acting like it's ridiculous to take his run so seriously as a defense mechanism.

Yeah, honestly, I feel for ToT. Teenhood is stressful, confusing, and unpleasant half the time. He's clearly done a lot of growing up, but he'll have to live with this mark on his reputation forever. Tot seems like a really genuine guy, his response was perfect and we shouldn’t hold anything against him especially since he was literally a kid. A kid making dumb decisions, I wouldn’t even hold it against him if he was a legal adult (18). Of course a teenager isn’t going to make the best decisions, adolescence are the years that teaches us what not do do from trail and error. Honestly he shouldn’t even feel bad about it, just be like yeah I fucked up but I learned from it and moved on. As should everyone else.

Also, the ice cave music at the end was such a nice addition to the video. That song is so simple, but so damn good. It's shocking how great they made the soundtracks for games that couldn't have live instrument recordings, like Ocarina of Time or from older systems like Super Castlevania IV. Being made with only midi type systems, it's just crazy how well people learned to make them work. I hated midi recordings growing up and yet I never realized that's essentially what those OSTs were because they wrote, and utilized textures, so well.

3:28 - In some countries where the grid frequency data is public, you can also use the Mains Hum to timestamp exactly when a video was recorded. So even without a stutter in the audio if different parts of the video match up to being recorded at separate times you have a bang on case for splicing.

Hey! Thats me in the beginning! :) What a rush of memories you brought up of the early speedrunning days in our small niche communities (MK64 was a big/ probably biggest speedrunning commuity back then.) A lot of the SM64 speedrunning growth and community from 03-07ish came from the Mario Kart community (Myles and myself were top runners in MK64 and Marius "Holy Moly" in MKDD). Before this vid, I had already stumbled upon other vidoes that revealed their cheated runs. Reflecting on this, Marius cheating did not exactly suprise me by his particularly aggressive and arrogant demeanor he had on the formus back in the day... but Myles was a disappointing suprise. He was someone I occasionally interacted with that I trusted and respected his other MK64 and SM64 achievements and didn't doubt their validity, and thus trusted and accepted when I saw his video replace mine on SDA. This was an well-made and organized video I stumbled upon. Thank you for retelling an interesting and important part of speedrunning history! It always gives me a warm feeling that my 13-16 year old self had an interest and obsession to go fast in video games that it left a tiny part in speedrunning history. :)

I remember seeing a comment in a video about speed runners cheating which said "speed runners don't cheat because they can't get a faster time, they cheat to get a faster time faster" which seems more and more true the more speed running videos I watch. A lot of these guys were very skilled at the game but a lot of speed running is about consistency and luck, which takes a lot of practice and many attempts to overcome, and it is so easy to just splice together your best runs, or use a TAS to put in the perfect inputs at the perfect time instead of spending hours to improve your skills.

Respect ToT a lot for that, dude just came right out and was like "yeah, i was a kid, I was competitive, i did a stupid thing, and I'm extremely ashamed I cheated now" and took the opportunity he was given to come out and say that. Can respect that a lot more than someone in continual denial, deflecting onto others, and pretending nothing happened in the face of overwhelming evidence.

Kids do foolish things. You can only become an adult when you acknowledge your wrongdoings and move forward. ToT has my respect. I've heard of instances of kids caught cheating and their runs pulled-sometimes all of their runs, because you can't know for sure which ones were fake and which ones weren't. I'm also aware that some of those people who cheated as kids came back to the communities (sometimes under other names) and not been there to compete, but have used maybe some of the same skills they used to cheat to find new tech, helping catch others who cheat, develop RTA strategies for that tech, reforming themselves and playing casually, getting the hard way and for real the skill they used to pretend to have. Could mods of a particular game's leader boards welcome such a person back to the leader board, with full knowledge of the past, let such a player back in? Maybe. Not easily, perhaps, but sure. I mean, you'd probably want to keep an eye on the m for a bit, but … people change when they have reason to change. (The thing is … you can usually identify an inflection point. I'd never trust someone who "changed" just as they wanted to submit new times, for example.)

I'm glad ToT not only apologized for their actions, but were genuine with it and showed that they know what they did was harmful and that they are regretful of their actions. So many people who get caught cheating in speedruns either never admit to their wrongdoings or barely admit to them at all, and they try to justify their actions. While ToT can never undo the damage they caused to the community, at least they understand what they did was wrong and feel genuine regret for their actions. I wish only the best for them, I can tell how much they've matured and grown since this incident.

I remember cheating in one of my elementary school classes. The one time I cheated, it never occurred to my 7-year-old mind that what I was doing was incredibly bad. The weight of the situation did not hit me until someone in my class told the teacher while we were taking the test. My heart dropped. My life felt like it came to an end. Nothing can ever compare to that feeling of dread that I felt that day. I cannot even remember the punishment that I was given, but I can clearly remember the dark pit of despair that I fell into because of my actions. I can only imagine what those speedrunners must have felt after being caught and confronted by so many people. I hope that they have all learned something about how bad cheating is. I only really have one memory of cheating in a competition (albeit largely cause I don't participate in many competitions), but it still haunts me to this day. It was all the way back in elementary school when I was doing cross country (basically just running, not actually running across the country). There was only one time I actually managed to get a medal and it was the time that I cut a single corner. It was a really sharp corner that could have made a difference in the time, though I'm not too sure about the placing (it was a long time ago after all). To anyone reading this: never cheat when an award is on the line. Whether it be physical or digital it will likely haunt you in the future. You will have to live with that for a long time and, especially if it is a physical reward, will probably have difficulty ignoring that it ever happened. I'm not gonna try and tell you that cheating is wrong. I put very little faith in those types of arguments after all. However, if you are the competitive type (and likely are if you are considering cheating) you will eventually realize that your victory was illegitimate and will be forced to wonder how you would have done if you had done it legitimately. Even if you think that the opinion of others doesn't matter, your opinion certainly will and I hope that at least a few people will realize that even they won't approve of what they are doing a few years down the line.

I like that challenge to prove you can make a splice look legit, here is what I'd try: run the console of off DC power, battery or such but if that's considered illegitimate you can try square wave ac generation and then it should be much easier to sync up the hum

Great video, extremely well put together! It was not only super interesting to learn about this part of Super Mario 64's history, but it's crazy to think that these records are being beaten by legitimate human players nowadays! The level of skill and the dedication that people have for this game is mind-blowing

The music beginning of the video reminded me of the ScrewAttack intro. My mind thought the angry video game nerd theme was about to play

That intro music is so nostalgic, reminds me of the cinemassacre theme before AVGN episodes

Good video, and I think you have a good outlook on how to treat cheaters. One thing I do hope is that this channel doesn't become a place obsessed with cheating-based content. I think you have a knack for making good speedrunning related content and could go beyond just the topic of cheating. It's only been two vids so I don't want to sound overly presumptuous about your overall plans but I just know that there is a bit of fetishization with cheating content in the speedrunning YT sphere. Either way though, I am looking forward to more vids from you.

Why do you think his second video is another cheating video, because he knows controversy and drama does well and wants to capitalize on it. That drama sells, especially on youtube, is pretty common knowledge. And I'm curious what you mean by his good outlook on treating cheaters. Like Apollo Legend (and unlike someone like Karl Jobst or Goose for that matter) he seems to relish in bashing on the cheaters in the video and how "bad" and "wrong" it all is, he makes a spectacle out of it. Putting out a disclaimer to not harass when your videos are specifically aimed at ridiculing the cheaters involved seems incredibly disingenuous. I enjoy the videos because it's interesting to hear about how the cheaters cheated and how they eventually got caught. They're also well made, good script and solid presentation but I dislike his approach so it's funny to see someone like his videos especially because of his approach (to cheaters)
