Arguably the best KZbin video on this particular subject. I'm currently planning to make and fit a medium-sized door for a space underneath the stairs using concealed hinges (inset), and I've learnt so much thanks to this video. Great stuff.

Charlie - after 25 years in the house, my European hinges in the kitchen have succumbed to the abuse of 4 kids - so, I find myself needing to replace the hinges on 27 cabinet doors (well not all need it, but I'll take the opportunity to upgrade to soft-close hinges) - with many of them requiring repositioning to deal with damaged MDF around some of the cups. I've watched several KZbin videos & your video is by far the best - I now am not freaking out over where to find the best hinges w/ soft close, and all the work to install them without screwing up. Thank you for the really detailed video on how to do it - including walking through the brochure, using a jig and a mockup. My blood pressure is now quite a few points lower! Great job.

Just wanted to say "thank you" for making this video. I consider myself pretty handy, but 100+ hours into a walnut cabinet build, I wasn't sure exactly where to drill. I had a pretty good idea, but wasn't sure until I saw your video. I also made a small prototype out of scraps to convince myself.

I am building a rather large buffet with three inset doors. I plan to use these same hinges for the first time and have been quite nervous about screwing it up. I like your suggestion about doing a mock-up and will try that. Thank you for taking the time to painstakingly document your experience and trials and errors. You have helped me more than you know and I am grateful.

Charlie, your advice to do a trial fit of the hinges on scrap wood is INVALUABLE. Once done you can see how they work, and then work out, first whether you should change any of your measurements BEFORE you actually cut into your doors, and later how to adjust the doors. So much easier to do with the trial piece. Thank you so much for the tip, and to everybody about to fit hinges for the first time, follow Charlie’s tip...DO A TRIAL ON SCRAP WOOD FIRST!

Charlie you are a genius. I think I was going through the same pain you did trying to find the right answers. But everyone speaks gobbledygook until you start to get your head around reveals, cups, types of frames etc etc. No one makes it easy for what should be pretty straight forward. Its not the first time I have bumped into your videos and this one has been a life save before I completely gave up and used some ugly ass butt hinges. THANK YOU

Great video as usual Charlie. I’m a very poor DIYer by comparison, but have one tip. I’m not sure if you’ve covered this before on your channel (I did try a search). Screws in MDF can pull out over time. One of my hobbies is installing car stereo and I learned that using screw in nutserts provides a much more secure long lasting fixing. I replaced all the screws on my amplifier rack and subwoofer cabinet with them. I’m not suggesting that they are needed by default for in house carpentry. (Vibration creates a different problem in a car). But I also have a bathroom cabinet which someone else built for us. The screws on the concealed hinge plates on that came loose after 3 years or so. It may be that they did not use enough hinges or there was some misalignment or they’ve absorbed too much moisture. I don’t know. But fortunately nutserts provide a cheap and easy fix. You can buy them for a few pence. You just drill out the hole a bit bigger, screw in the nutsert either with a hex bit or flat blade depending on type and then use a bolt rather than a screw to attach the hinge plate or whatever.

Great video thanks . Two comments.: Take that Ryobi drill and drop it in the nearest river. Second: make the jig with two holes for the retaining screws as well as the 35mm hole. It's incredibly easy to get those two screw holes slightly out and 1/10 mm error there amplifies to 5mm error at the other end of the hinge bracket. But thanks for other good advice

That's a fair point. Only issue is if you have to take the doors off for any reason, it's easier to unclick rather than unscrew. As they're click on it's good to acquaint yourself with how they work as designed.

I have watched several of your videos with great interest and appreciate the tips that you have given me. However, I think I may have a tip for you (and your viewers); you use a bradawl to mark the position for a screw or drill hole, for many years I have used an automatic centre-punch for this and found it to be very effective. The automatic centre-punch is cheap and available from many DIY supplies stores and I think that, as you simply push it on the spot chosen until it 'clicks', it's easier to be accurate because you don't have to twist the tool and possibly 'wander' the tip. Please try it.

Thank you so much for the tutorial! I apreciate the effort explaining the catalogue, and those little tips that nobody teaches and are so needed when you have to put these hinges. I'm about to place my first ones and I bought a Forstner bit that I can use in my router, so that I can set the depth properly and keep the perpendicular exact. Greetings from Argentina. :)

Yes the router will give you a wonderful, perpendicular hole! Thanks so much for the comment, and good luck with the project. Humbled to hear from you in Argentina!

YES on difficulty with info for Blum. I decided instead to go to Menard's and buy Hickory inset frameless soft close (Hickory Hardware® Bright Nickel Inset Frameless Soft Close Cabinet HingeModel Number: HH74722-14 Menards® SKU: 4880598). They give you a range of specs and if your door and application fits within those specifications, then all you need to know is to use 1- 3/8" bore size down 1/2" and locate the hole 4 mm from the edge. That's all you need for drilling into the door. Then when you have the door with the 2 bores drilled and the hinge screwed squarely in place, you place the door (on top of the spacer you want for the reveal at the bottom---mine is 3/32") inside next to the panel you will attache the hinge to. You place the door snug to the panel and drill the holes for the plates (it comes with the plates). When you place the screws into the plates, the door is snug to the panel with no reveal. (Again, I set the door on 3/32" spacer and cut the doors so they will eventually have a 3/32" reveal.) But then you go to the plate and there are 3 screws that are amazing. They will move your door up/down, in/out, and set the reveal you want. I was amazed how quickly I moved the doors around using 3 screws (for each hinge) until I had an equal reveal all around. There was no guess work on where to drill for the hinges.

Great explanation of inset door hinging. Precisely what I needed as a refresher course. I agree. A mock-up is the way to go.

By far the best video to do with hinge installation I've come across , thank you.

Great job. You made an incomprehensible Blum schematic understandable. Especially for me, an American stuck with Imperial measurements. My only criticism, and it's a small one, is that it's a lot harder to mark out where the base plate goes on a fully constructed cabinet than it is on a mockup. In that case, you're better off making a jig of some sort. They don't sell them because the thickness of the door measurement is crucial and varies with whatever material you're using.

Charlie, first of all "Thanks for making and sharing your videos"I just wanted to tell ya that I nearly chocked on me tea when you said you paid 9 pounds odd for the hinges and then 2 pounds odd for the dearer plates..loool.....I'm a cabinet maker for 22 yrs now and i've never bought from plum, but I get all of hardware from C&C fittings Waterford Ireland.(A little plug for them)and by the way, they will ship anywhere in europe I pay for soft close standard with plate 1.80 per hinge (euro) and for inset hinge like you are displaying with plate about 2.80 euro per hinge..If you were ever in need of a lot of them, it might be a good thing to do a little cross the water buying!!!! ;) ;) Keep up the good work!..
